Lenition can be mysterious and frustrating - but it doesn't have to be. This video shows you which letters lenite (it's less than you think) and simple ways to remember them, so that you can stop overthinking lenition and start feeling it. Feeling the flow of Gaelic is essential to deep fluency.
If you want to use Gaelic more naturally, without overthinking, this video is for you!
Thanks for watching and take care. 🙂

Thank you so much for your videos Jason. I was born in the Gàidhealtachd and live there now, in Coigach. 50 years ago Gaelic was the predominant language here, now only a handful of speakers have it. I have been trying to learn for years but my skills and confidence have multiplied exponentially since discovering your videos. Next week I am going to the fist Feis we have had here in decades. What a beautiful and poetic language Gaelic is. Thank you for your generosity, enthusiasm and warmth. Tapadh leibh!

Please, continue doing videos on you channel! I'm scottish just for 5,5%, but I love scottish culture SO MUCH. I became a master of a celtic history, now I know 90% of any information about celts, firstly, about Scotland. I actually want to learn pictish language, but it died a long ago, and now I'm learning gaelic. There is just around 10 000 people that speaks gaelic every day, and I want to be one of them. Continue your channel, please!

Oh yes, this is helpful. I only have to remember the consonants "L N R". Since I already know what the 5 vowels are and they are the same as in English, I can just remember "The 5 vowels plus L N and R don't lenite" We have (or had) the L&N Railroad near where I grew up so "The 5 vowels plus the L&N Railroad don't lenite". Sgoinneil!

Thank you so much !!! This is my second week of starting in gàidhlig and I've been so confused about these ! You mentioning the dialect thing on the word "Obair" was a relief ! I heard a similar f sound when studying through duolingo where some voices would pronounce it with an F and others with an R and I thought I was hearing things lol Learning from you is super fun and encouraging, so I'd like to thank you for that as well ! 🤗🙌

I came across this channel just yesterday and I really love your teaching style? Assuming you're American, judging by your channel details, can I ask how you got interested in Gaelic? I too am an American, I came to love anything and everything to do with Scotland since I have some friends who live there. And since I love linguistics as well I thought I'd make an attempt at learning Gaelic. I'm curious, what's your story? Also, I love the way "glè mhath" sounds! I'm probably going to start saying that all the time. And I think Eilidh is a very pretty name as well!

According to Duolingo, "We have a new crow." and "He has the new crow." are important sentences. So I wouldn't worry too much about coming up with strange examples. I did not know one could have a crow as a pet, nor did I think keeping a squirrel would be a thing but I guess Highlanders are a bit weird. 😅

This is very helpful, as I am still struggling to understand lenition. I have a question- sometimes I see a t- in front of a word (like “an t-uisge”). Does this have anything to do with lenition? I also struggle with knowing when to lenite a word. Is it just when it has “the” in front of it, and with some adjectives?

Great video, but I'm still a little confused as to when to use lenition. Why do we say madainn mhath ach feasgar math per eisimpleir?
@GaelicwithJason
@GaelicwithJason Жыл бұрын
Feasgar math! That's because Madainn is technically feminine, which lenites the next word if possible. Feasgar is technically masculine and doesn't. 🙂

Same in Welsh, nouns are male or female, the female nouns lenite ( we call it mutating) if they start with certain letters( similar to the Gaelic list, a similar alphabet) also interesting the Nordic roots of garden, in Welsh it's " gardd" which is female, so our lenition turns it to " ardd" as we lose the G..... Every day a school day. Gareth Jones

Thank you! Do you have another video explaining how we know *when* to lenite? I searched and can't seem to find that topic....I'm SO confused. I know it has something to do with masculine and feminine words? But how can we tell if a word is masculine or feminine, and therefore know when to lenite? I've written pages full of lists of words and can't identify ANY pattern.

Hello Jason! Thanks for the Gaelic Lessons😊 But, I have some suggestions for Your better explanations 🤔 First at all, Gaelic is not An easy language for us The normal people😅 So... Try to follow, 😮😮 "One and simple method" For Us!!! 😂 Sometimes, You confused "Yourself" 😅 And "Confused Everybody" 😢😮😅😂 In this lesson, Not all the words of Your alphabeth "Were translate"... "Ma, Allora di che cosa stiamo parlando, eh?" 😅😂😊 Look Jason! The most important things to teach... Is how to write, How to pronounce, how to Listen and how to read! Any language! 😮 So, Make it easier, man! I like the way you teach But... MAKE IT EASY! After to use or take words" Write a complete sentences!!! In a clear LÍNE!!! Please! Is more useful for us😠 Why? Because, We can Get the information more fast!!! In a simple SIMPLE LÍNE!!! DO NOT CONFUSED THE PEOPLE!!! Is a Nightmare... Really!😡 Looking for a words In a Middle of "Your drawings jungle" 😖😠 Remind... We are trying to learn... YOUR LANGUAGE!!! So, treat Us... 😢 As students!!! One of my First teachers have a "Fantástic example" Use a KISS... System? What?... 😮... He said Write it in this way: Keep It Simple Stupid... 😅😂😊🎉😊 And he was completely Right!!! And I learned well!!! Why? Everybody Confused everything, why? Use Kiss System! Life is Very Short, to stay complicating all!!! Got it? Est-ce que vous comprend pas? Capito? Lo entiendes? 😅😂🎉 In which language have to tell you? 😅😂🎉😊 DO NOT COMPLICATE THE GAELIC COURSE! I WANNA LEARN IT I WANNA TALK IT Oh Boy! We need Batman or Ironman help! 😮🤣🙃🤠😁 Right Now!!! jejejejeje Well...My Scottish Friend, I hope you Will understand Us!!! Make it easier... Please! Ci vediamo in altro Volta! Mio caro amico! Perhaps English is not your first language, you are from Mexico and you also write in French, so, to start, youare confusing me. Your missive is a ramble, and I am not surprised that Jason has not responded. May I remind you that at this level, what he does costs nothing. He has taught in schools in Scotland, and is self taught . He doesn't confuse me, I like his easy style, it's no problem to follow, it is kept at KISS levels, and each lesson I have done has clear achievable goals. I'm sorry that you felt compelled to write your chapter ( did you have a goal of how many emojis you could include? I trust you've found a superior learning source now. Gareth Jones
