I ask myself "how would I feel if this thing magically disappeared out of a sudden?". If the answer is "relieved", let it go 💫

My dear son, who just moved several states away, sent me a large metal mug with a clear cover for sipping. We're not much of a gift-giving family, so I was kinda surprised. I'm trying to declutter since I'm past 60. If it was microwaveable I'd use it. It's too wide to fit in the car for the rare times I'd have a travel coffee. I have it sitting by his picture & the message is sweet ("...great mom..."). You mentioned taking a picture, that's a GREAT IDEA! I've gotten rid of wedding gifts, but gifts from your kids, that's too tough!

I actually have a storage bin labeled “things I want to throw away but can’t” 😂 So at least they’re not clutter in my home.

I am such a sentimental hoarder. I literally just today got rid of the basket that flowers were in at my sister's funeral....it's just that I literally have nothing of hers 😭

Great video. This is exactly what I need to hear. I have so much stuff wrapped up in emotions about a failed marriage and my mom passing away.

Regarding the guilt of getting rid of gifts, I can’t remember most the gifts I’ve given over the years, and I sure don’t mind whatever the recipients ended up doing with the gifts. Makes sense that this logic would work in reverse also. 😊

It took a long time, but now my family and friends know that I have a simple home and any gifts I receive now are perishable ❤️. If there is a family item, my sisters ask if I want this item or that, and they do not take it personal when I decline.

What if I get rid of it and can't afford to buy it if/when I need it again?
@kathleentinlin17942 жыл бұрын
Maybe for those items try putting them in a box in storage area (basement, closet, attic, etc). See if you even think or go back to get that item in a set time period you choose like 6 months or a year...if not touched in those 6 months to a year it could be decluttered. This would be a good idea for smaller items like home decor, clothes, kitchen items, jewelry, etc...maybe not so much for big items like furniture.

When we give things to others, most people have no expectations what someone will do with it. The same is true when we are given something. Be OK with letting go of excess, things you know that will only become a burden to keep and not use.

Like the idea of video on where to go to donate our sentimental items. As an older viewer I have now inherited grandparents, aunts, parents nice items. Where to go to donate. Question about the Goodwill comment. Love your videos.

I LOVE Lucie's face!! (ah ! ah! ah!) GREAT choice! .....this is really how I felt the first times.... Dear Ms Katy, ...this little phrase ; ¨ give yourself permission...¨ is so powerful! May I add something I read and heard that really put things in their perspective (and reality) is: accept/allow yourself to...change! We change and with it, our taste, needs change with it/them. It helped me make peace with all those ¨ fears¨. Thank you so much for everything!! helene :))

Toys toys toys .. I just think "what if my children want to see them or give them to their children in the future?" I keep them but they take so much space... But what if they want to see what they played with in the future?
