You're a good teacher, you've got the patience for it. I think most guys would've loved to be an apprentice under somebody like you instead of the downright abusers we had to suffer under. The guy I apprenticed for would push you out of the way the second you took too long to do something and take over. Frustrating because you can't learn anything that way, you learn by getting thrown into the fire and figuring it out like this. These guys out here don't understand that you don't become a master day one, it takes years to gain the knowledge and skill to do something as efficiently as somebody who's been doing it for 30 years. Curb your expectations, guys out there act like they were never apprentices before. They were treated like garbage so they treat their apprentices like garbage. A bad practice that's unfortunately been passed on for far too long.

+1 for another commenter that says take notes.. I still have my big 3 ring binder full of the info sheets that came with contactors, motors, gas valves, furnace boards, etc.. not every unit still has the nice wiring diagram in it.. one thing I didnt have when I was in the industry was a smart phone with a camera.. taking pictures, organizing them and saving them is huge.. I do it in my current career all the time.. I also take pictures before I unwire something... if my phone rings in the middle of a job im likely to forget where all those pretty colors were when I hang up.. refer to the pic as its quick

One thing I would have done with Steven, when he was wiring that contractor was explain to him what each wire he took off and reinstalled did and where it went to, Ie. the black wire was going to common on the compressor, the red wire going to run on the compressor, and the orange wire going to the capacitor, which in turn powers the start windings in the compressor and fan motor. I think he would retain the info better if he knew what they did. I'm really glad to see younger people getting into the HVAC field. Keep learning Steven and you will get it.

Okay first of all, I strongly believe that you have to understand what the parts do and how they work before you are allowed to perform a maintenance. When I taught my apprentice how to do a maintenance on an AC system we always start by taking the cover off of the condenser, name all of the components, and explain what they do. Then we stop! We then sit in the grass while we take a look at the wiring diagram on the cover of the unit. We start by reading the legend of of all the components the diagram lists. We then find and name all the components on the wiring diagram as we go down the legend. Then we start from L1 L2 and work our way through the diagram and follow the flow of electricity through the components while naming them again, and making our way through the schematic. Then we bring the schematic over to the unit and do it again while relating the schematic to the actual physical components/parts. This is the best way to turn the lightbulb on in the apprentice. Take it slow and create a no pressure situation by guiding them through. Guide them through, guide them through, guide them through, and now they see the system. Now they understand the system. Now they see it clearly instead of just a bunch of confusing parts and wires. It truly amazes me how well this method works. Take it very slow while going through the diagram because it is very important. And if you do this you will save months of the apprentice being confused and unsure of themselves.

Hilarious thumbnail for the video! I'm reading the comments while shaking my head. There's nothing wrong with the way you're training Godzilla. He has to learn the fundamentals of the trade if he ever wants to progress beyond the apprentice level and that includes learning a logical approach to problem solving. Also, he needs to learn what each part of the system does... it's the only way one can troubleshoot a problem.

The only time a one pole contactor is needed is for crank case heater. I also put what goes back but it won't make a difference if you don't have the crankcase heater. Thanks for the oil tip under the fan. I'll check for that. TIP check across when unit is running from L1 to T1in voltage if you have voltage it's a sign of pitting contactor.replace it. You can also check with no 24 v at coil and going with continuity if there is resistance that means the same pitting not making completely. You have showed me some things when it comes to steam just sharing other tips that work. That method work with any switch. Last one gone from one side of coil to ground when you get 24v remove that side and wire nut it won't short. So you safe to do test. Put a wago 😂 take care and thanks for your time
@antoniosantiago2770
@antoniosantiago2770 3 жыл бұрын
Excuse I write to fast. In continuity there can be no voltage you already know that you don't want to damage your meter. I do everything with voltage even capacitor if I get a voltage drop then I take.the disconnect off and remove the 24v by going from ground to each side of contactor find 24 v remove that from thermostat coming from air handler wire nut it then I do the manual continuity test. I perform that as a confirmation of the voltage drop test across the legs if I get resistance I replace . Makes life easy and once you do them under load all the time it becomes really quicker and saves call backs. Thanks for sharing comments.

If you ever come across a contactor that doesn't seem to look the same as the one you are replacing ( although it's specifications are correct) you can check it's function with a multimeter on continuity . Then once you know which terminals do what you can normally visually swap terminal to terminal, however sometimes the new or replacement piece has double the number of terminals. That's where it pays to have a spare on hand just in case.

I think you have too much of a "friend" type of work relationship with Godzilla. When you want him to get his hands dirty and you become serious obviously you just want him to figure it out but it clearly just makes him more nervous, he clearly doesnt know much of what he is doing unless he is being told exactly what to do. I feel for Steven because I knew nothing at one point to but I never had a guy filming me while struggling either, I'm sure that can play with his mind and even if he thinks hes right, your demeanor makes him question if hes doing anything right. I am surprised that they didn't know that and void warranty on compressor if they were still under warranty. Makes you think, "what would (Mikey or any boss) catch/look at that im not seeing? i think he did ok, definitely needs to get one system at a time, killing all thermostats before you mess with a condenser.
