L massaging Light's feet has definitely become a meme, but I still love the symbolism in it. L says he knows they will be parting ways soon, inferring he knows his time is up. Also the biblical reference. This scene is in reference to Jesus (L) washing his disciples feet . He washes Judas's (Light's) feet knowing he will betray him. It holds such meaning. The religous tone sin this show never fail to impress me.

There's also another story in the Bible of a prostitute (a sinner) washing Jesus' feet with her hair. Because Light thinks so highly of himself, to him, this is the symbolism. But in reverse it's the symbolism you put forth. Giving it a double meaning almost. Also ironically, it's one of the only scenes L is seen with shoes on and Light has them off, in reverse of how it normally is

Fun fact: you really can't tell with english dub, but it's apparent in the sub. In the beginning scene when L goes into Watari's office, Watari first asks him "what's wrong?" in a formal polite manner, like how a butler would address his master. Then he sees L's face and ask him "what's wrong?" again, but in a more informal manner, like how a parent would talk to their children.

I have a feeling L has known he would die from the moment Light became Kira again in the helicopter. He was completely subdued and always glanced at Light from that moment on, and the scene of them in the rain is L finally letting his true self out and showing his true opinion on Light, since he knows he won't have much longer to do it. He always thought Light was Kira, but could never prove it, so every single interaction of theirs has always been L trying to find the cracks in Light's armor and see if he could give him something useful. In L's final moments, seeing Light smile finally proved him right.

Some people like Light, some don't. I personally love the unique idea of having the Protagonist be more of a villain. Very few shows go down that route and do it well. And the absolutely genius plan from the previous episode combined with this one was extremely well thought out. Light manipulated everyone, even himself. And it's a shame. We can see from episodes 17-24 that Light really was a different person without the notebook. He actually had compassion and cared for people. But power corrupts. And absolute power corrupts absolutely. Light cared for people. Light cared for L. Kira did not.

I love him as a character in anime, he is expertly written and easy to understand. However I hate him for killing L. But that is partially also because I like people with quirks and L is super cute eating sweets and doing silly things while being serious. And he was also expertly written, so I hate parting with him. He was the true counterpart to Light. Some may disagree, but I think this is the best episode of Death Note. It feels so much different than every other episode in a sense that it's still a battle of wits between L and Light and both of them have their schemes, but they aren't what's important. There is always a sense of melancholy in the background, like something imminent is approaching. You can sense L's death approaching, just like L, and yet you can do nothing to stop it. Light once again manipulates everyone to his use and gets what he wants, and he holds his greatest enemy in his arms as he defeats him. It's so masterfully done.

@@Marta-uv4id SPOILERS I agree. And *you* might not agree with me on this, but I like what N and M represent. The show didn't give them ample time to develop as characters, I think, but as devices, I feel like they served their purpose well. And I like that they don't respect Light the way even L seems to. Where L's the foil to Light, existing in part to cement Light's view of himself as a practically unmatched genius whose only true obstacle is his perfect counterpart, N's like, "Nope. You're just a regular old criminal with a weapon of mass destruction. I didn't have to be L's intellectual superior to beat you. I just needed to drop the whole egotistical 'I will be the *one* to end Kira' mentality and actually work with my colleague." And then it's Matsuda of all people who guns Light down in the end. I dunno. Maybe this is just my way of justifying shitty writing, but it's kind of disappointing to me how many people think L should have been the one to kill Light. I wouldn't know where to begin explaining it, but I low-key feel like that would have been fuel for the "Gigachad Light" types too. Sorry for the essay-length comment btw.

Ironic how the episode named "Silence" has the best sound design of any anime episode ever. I will die on that hill. It's so interesting how this episode in specific plays with the audio mixing. Like when L breaks the cookie and the sound of the cracking shortbread drowns out the rest of the sound. It's such a neat touch. I think the sound design is easily one of the easiest things to take for granted in a show as it isn't in the forefront of everyone's mind the same way animation or music are.

I wanna say: I always felt like Rem kinda rushed her decision there. I know she's willing to die for Misa, but doesn't mean she wants to. Plus she despises Light, and yet is playing straight into his hands. I feel like she could have, at first, talked with L, try to make a deal where she'd work with him, tell him everything she knows, etc., in exchange for Misa's immunity. And to make it clear that if he refuses, then her only option would be to kill him (and, hey, he doesn't know that would kill her off as well, so that threat would be particularly effective in that context). That way, L has a powerful ally in catching Kira AND remains alive, and Misa's safe, as Rem wants. That's very much a win-win situation, and I think L would agree. Especially since the alternative would be that he dies and Kira wins, because that is what would happen if he refused: Rem just do what she does her and the story continue as it did before. Least dramatic outcome for sure, but if I was Rem I'd at least try to make a deal with L there before going for the extreme solution, no?
@kadencoates8774
@kadencoates8774 Жыл бұрын
Any outcome where Light gets caught is off the table for Rem. If he goes to prison or gets executed it would destroy Misa's happiness. Basically Rem's only option to protect her happiness was to make sure the Kira investigation never gets solved.

You forget the key part in this scenario. Since rem cares for misa so much, she cannot do anything that harms Light also, despite all light is doing rem is not sure whether light would harm misa once L is dealt with.
@mrsjones7907

I’ve posted several chapters of a fanfic with very similar story-beats to what you’ve suggested. In my story, after Rem sees that Misa’s lifespan was halved again, she realizes that Light must have manipulated the situation to bring Misa to the point of making the deal again, infuriating her and causing her to realize just how little Light cared for Misa’s wellbeing. So when she later realized that Light was trying to force her to kill L and, by extension, herself, she went and made a deal with L based on the fact that, though she was willing to die for Misa, she couldn’t bear the thought of Misa being left alone with Light without protection from Light’s manipulations. Basically, Rem was more concerned about an unchecked Light ruining Misa’s life than temporarily breaking her heart.
@raveoreynolds6049
@raveoreynolds6049 Жыл бұрын
It's definitely rushed, but given what the author intended, it had to happen asap. Because this way, it's basically like L just got the DN, and had zero time to act on it. This both serves as a way of protecting L as a character, but also making the second investigation feel fresher, when they know of the book from the very start.
@buciallstar
@buciallstar Жыл бұрын
the issue why Rem rushed to kill L was thatL suggested the 13 day rule could be fake. Rem had to instantly shut down that thought, because if they find out the rule is fake, that means Misa is back being the prime suspect. And she knows that the other task force members are no threat and don't think ahead, so if she kills L and Watari immediately then they aren't going to question the rules anymore. She basically had to react instantly and didn't think it through.

It's true. This case shows it. If someone else takes the Death Note, this wouldn't have happened. I mean, it depends, maybe there are people like Light. But Light's sense of justice, him being better than anyone, him being bored and unchallenged, the note gave him the challenge, the power to change the world. He looked at himself as a god. He felt invincible most of the time. Sure, there were cases where he almost slipped up and started to panic. This was all an enjoyment for him, something he couldn't experience in other ways. It was like a game for him. His thought process, his personality always was like this but he wasn't 100% bad. For a limit I supported Light's idea, he went way too far. It all became a game for him. When he forgot about the Death Note and lost all other memories connected to it, he was that young genius with the same sense of justice, but morally not that rotten.

I would argue that L was smarter. L was at a severe disadvantage because Light had the notebook and knew everything about how Kira's powers worked. L had to piece together how it worked from only partial information. And ultimately it was Rem who killed L, not Light. Having a shinigami who would act on Light's behalf is what allowed him to win. On top of that L has an ability to think like other people in a way that Light does not possess. He is able to tell when someone is being desceptive or being genuine. It's subtle, but there are several clues that point to this: 1. L recognizes that the 2nd Kira is serious about showing off their shinigami in the recording, and screams and falls over because of it, when there is no real reason for him to reach that conclusion. 2. When Light gives up the Death Note and loses his memories of it, L correctly identifies that Light is being genuine in his denial of being Kira, even though L believes Light is Kira and all evidence supports his theory. 3. When Misa tells Light that she will obey Light's wishes and not investigate The Yotsuba Group further, L notices that she is lying. Light, on the other hand, believes her. I'm sure there are others as well, but you get the idea. L sees through people in a way that Light simply isn't capable of.

It was never matter of "i have to gather more clues to raise %" it was "i'm 100% sure its Light becose... why not. And i want to prove this." That why he was so... frustrated when all clues prove Light is innocent and he still was 100% sure it was Light. That is big minus.

While it is really sad that L died, I feel like we've glossed over the major importance of Rem's life and now death. She was essentially the conscious for Misa, acting as the carefulness to counter Misa's blind impulsivness. On top of that, all of Light's emotional abuse and manipulation that Rem would be able to alert Misa to, she can't now that she's dead. Rem was sort of like Misa's anchor, and now with her gone, Light not only has free reign to be an evil god, but also bend Misa to his will with no restriction. Everyone loses in this episode, except Light.

One of my favorite...I wanna say 4? Episodes. The previous episode where Light's memory comes back and his plan is revealed, the one where L appears, Light kills Lind L.Taylor and reveals Kira's existence, the first episode, this, and a non-specific episode I don't want to hint at or spoil as it has yet to come. My favorite bits are when L calls Light out on his bullshit, both because Light KNOWS he's right, that he's a fundamentally dishonest person, and because he only reinforces that when he deflects "have you ever told the truth?" with" everybody lies sometimes". He never answers the question directly, never confirms or denies it, even to say "yes". His answer is more dishonest than a straight up lie, because at least with a direct lie, you've given a definitive statement. Listen to Light answer that question, he starts talking like a politician, he won't even be any kind of direct with L, who he knows he's got against the ropes, who isn't asking with wiretaps or recording devices or any traps or tricks. He goes out into the rain where any evidence he could gather would be ruined, where it would just be the two of them talking where no one could see or hear them, and asks Light, who he almost certainly considers a friend, to just be honest with him. Light could confess here and L wouldn't be able to do a thing about it and they're BOTH smart enough to know that and Light just...lies, doesn't even directly address the question L asks, because he's that much of a snake, and L knows it. "I thought you'd say something like that". The closest thing to a redemption this scene gives Light is when L is dying, and he gives him that smile, that "I've WON" smile, only for L to see, to confirm that yes, he WAS Kira, before L dies, so L gets the closure of knowing, but with how Light is, everything he's done so far, he'd have done that anyway, taken that opportunity to gloat to his greatest foe that he'd won. Personally I think L is the smarter one between them, Light's advantages are almost entirely supernatural and unpredictable and L STILL had him so cornered he had to erase his memory and give away the Death Note to even get out of it. Still a brilliant move, but a mundane, human detective with natural, human level resources was still absolutely obliterating every strategy put forth by the supernaturally empowered teenage genius with undetectable gods of death, if not on his side, then in his camp. Plus he had an entire OTHER supernaturally empowered person on his side with greater power than him AND an actual shinigami ally willing to die for her. Light BARELY wins, and even then, he had a god of death do it for him, he still never learned L's real name until presumably after looking at Rem's notebook. Ultimately, I think Light lost in this episode, because he sacrificed everything in the name of winning, lost his only equal, probably the only person who could be a genuine friend to him, and is now doomed to a pointless, lonely existence, while L got to die fulfilled, knowing the truth, his best and only friend at his side, knowing others would continue after him. Light won the game of cat and mouse, but L won the game of life on his own terms. His death is sad, but Light's life is sadder.

@angelicxlover143 the duo who created Death Note takes subtle jabs at the whole ordeal but basically shonen jump the magazine they worked for, insisted they tried to carry on the series which they reluctantly did. If you read their Bakuman series, the main characters are partially base on themselves and the Reversi series is basically Death Note. Arguments can be made that Death Note could have ended on a high where both both and both lose by having both die. @@elsotanodelhorror810 true, but not after the fact L tricked him when he killed his stand-in.. So it was not his intention in the beginning, Light's cockiness is his strength and weakness as well, and L did exploit that..

The footwashing scene was actually anime-only, still really good though. Also, in the manga as he's dying we're told L's final thoughts, as he sees Light grinning at him he laments that while he wasn't wrong about Light, he's out of time to do anything now.

You should definitely watch the "L's funeral" scene.

14:49 now i finally understood why L behaved this way in this particular episode. at the rooftop L was simply asking Light for a confession and also to see how much of light's morals have corrupted, then the foot massage that L insisted in giving Light was a way of saying "You're the god of this world now... so i might as well serve you and treat you like one." It was heartbreaking to see L like that, he had lost all his hope and effort in trying to "find" kira because since he knew Light was kira then what would L search for if kira is right next to him? He just wanted to accuse light but he couldn't.

In 2006, 2 life action movies of Death Note were made in Japan, and the outcome of L vs Kira ended different than in the anime. Yo guys should check it out.

even with the religious symbolism, L massaging light's feet was very..... suggestive lmao

It always kind of annoyed me that they left out L's dying words. It's nothing huge or anything but in the manga as he's looking up at him he says "Light. But I..." and then he dies. Most assume that he was trying to say "But I won" or something along those lines but the author left it deliberately ambiguous so it's still open to interpretation. Also that whole foot massage scene never happens in the manga, that's an anime exclusive thing.

i feel like having l suddenly talk in his head would intrude with the quietness of the moment while light, the audience and l himself realize that he is actually dying.

And thus ends this great masterpiece. What a perfect tragic finale. Could you imagine if they made it these days, they would probably continue it with some weird wannabe L as an antagonist that will just never really capture the vibe L had. Probably even try and jump the shark with some lame escalation like "Now there are two of them!"

A big respect to l 🙏🙏 He only had one friend in his life and that was light and in the end he betrayed him .this shows how cruel light is . But still salute to l 😭😭
