I'm really glad Shoto's trauma surrounding his fire wasn't immediately solved. For this moment in his fight with Midoriya, he didn't think about his father, quirk or childhood and, like he said in the previous episode, forgot all about it. The amount of trauma Shoto has can't be solved by a single inspiring speech from someone, but it did get him started on his journey.

This is the most ironic turn of events for this tournament. The main character doesn't even make the Top 3. The son of Endeavor (who always hated being number 2 next to All Might) lands second place. And the bully who said he's going to win, actually does win in the end, but isn't satisfied with the result. My Hero Academia really does have some twists up its sleeve.

I do think a good chunk of the reason Bakugo wanted to beat Shoto was because of the power he saw during his and Deku's match. But I also think Bakugo just wanted to beat him at his strongest. The whole premise of the sports festival is that everyone is supposed to be trying their best. Which is why, even though the audience saw Ochako as a "weak, frail girl", Bakugo just saw her as another opponent. And he gave his respect to her by trying his best. Shoto only using his ice means he was only using about half of his power for most of the tournament. Sure, Bakugo won, but it was only against half of his power. And unless they fight again, he'll never know if he truly earned that victory. If you challenge someone to a race and you're at a full sprint but they're only kinda jogging, sure, you won. But could you have won if they were sprinting too? Maybe. But the victory is soured anyway. Obviously, the situation has more nuance with Shoto's trauma, but I mostly wanted to focus on Bakugo's mindset for this episode. Especially since the story focuses on his dynamic with Deku a lot

In his own way Bakugo wanted Todoroki to feel the same with him as he did Midoriya. He already has an inferiority complex when it comes to him and so the idea that he's not even worth going all out against in a finals crushes him. He's also aware of all the trauma Todoroki has since he happened to overhear them in the hall and he doesn't even use to to try and goad Todoroki into using his power he simply wants the match to be the match with no outside influence.

Something that I want to point out is that the "recap" for this episode are all scenes that show how the school festival hasn't gone as Bakugo wanted at all. It first shows the scene where he realized that in his old school (before UA) he was just a big fish in a small pond. While promising that he'll prove that he is the best. Then shows the scene where he says that he's going to win the school festival, followed of the scenes where he lost the race against Deku, the scene where he only reached second place in the cavalry battle , the scene where Todoroki (arguably the strongest contestant in the sports festival) declared "war" to Deku and not him, then the scene where he struggled more than he expected with Uraraka's plan (even if he won), then the scene of Todoroki going with his full power against Deku but not against him, etc. All of them are scenes meant to show why Bakugo is so frustrated in this episode. Because they're all scenes of moments where he wasn't the #1 as he promised. That's why this battle against Todoroki was so important to him. Because it was the only way for him to feel that he actually won despite so much failure during the rest of the sports festival. In this episode he even made a mistake and accidentally entered the wrong room where Todoroki was preparing for the battle instead of his own room. So, even in little things like that you can see how the school festival really wasn't going as he wanted at all.

This battle, while not as emotionally impactful as Deku vs Todoroki, still gets a few tears from me. Deku cheering Todoroki on which momentarily calms is turmoil, and then Bakugo's VA (both english and japanese) sounding like they are in pain for winning without the fire are just so good!

That's not just a My Hero rule, that's an Anime rule. Unless somebody is actively saying they are dead and/or holding a funeral AND we see the body we assume they are not actually dead. Shows LOVE to bring back people we thought were dead in outlandish ways. Even when we do see the body and have someone tell us they are dead, we still have to question whether we trust the person telling us that they are not just faking. We refer this rule as "no body no death"

34:08 Montana coming at it with the most reasonable attitude out there. I know way too many people who just hate Bakugo because he's a bit of a bully. People are often very quick to dismiss any character that harms the MC in fiction. Like most bullies in real life, I don't think Bakugo has an inferiority complex or is really insecure, at least not in the way that the word is typically understood. According to actual studies on the issue, bullies usually have an inflated ego rather than any kind of self-esteem issues. Giving a bully self-esteem training just makes them a better bully. What changes a bully is his or her environment, and you actually see that reflected in MHA! The two things that make a bully stop bullying are 1) Victims and bystanders standing up against the bully's actions, and 2) A supportive adult role model.
@thatredhead3613 Жыл бұрын
Agree with everything but calling bakugo a bit of a bully is a bit disingenuous. He did actively and maliciously bully deku for presumably over a decade (I.e literally saying that that deku should kill himself). I don't think that counts as a bit. And please don't get me wrong I'm neither a bakugo super hater or a Stan for him. So I mean to be as unbiased as I can. Still think he's a fantastic character and I agree with the rest of your points but I don't really think he should be forgiven or even having people like him this early in the series. Later on like season 5 and especially 6 is a different story if you've seen it yet. Anyways that's just my opinion and you're free to disagree with you so desire.

My baby Bakugou struggling with his inferiority superiority complex. The way his voice crack gets me. He wouldn't take it as a win if his opponent did not give it their all. I can understand how he feels. There was this one time in college I entered an art competition and won third place. When I told my family, my brother said that then there might have been only three that entered and it hurt because I thought it was true. Not a lot of people knew about it, so I did not know what to think. Bakugou being chained was funny to me the first time, but upon rewatch, it felt very inapporiate to them to humiliate him like that. They should've respected that he did not that metal, but because they had to put a show for the public they still put him up there. Todoroki was also going through his stuff that he could not think straight. It's so heartwarming to face his mom again.

I can't take credit for this as someone else commented it in another video but it's interesting that Bakugo, Deku & Todoroki all won with asterisks: Deku won the foot race but didn't showcase his quirk at all nor showed the world he was here! Todoroki won the cavalry battle but had to use his fire (something he hates because of Endeavor). And finally Bakugo he won but Todoroki didn't use his flames so it wasn't at his best.
@Kaempfdog Жыл бұрын
The finale match! I got some stuff for that! Now there is the question of what would have happened if Todoroki DID use his fire. And there are one of two options. If he missed, Bakugo would get hotter and have more sweat to work with. But if he hit Bakugo? Let’s say the kid would be a thing of the past. Bakugo’s quirk is nitroglycerin based. If you ignite or heat it up TOO much, it’ll go off. And if he hit Bakugo with a fire blast, he could preemptively set off his explosion sweat. So in all likelihood Bakugo would’ve lost a limb with that kind of force. (And honestly that’s a best case scenario. If Bakugo’s palm sweat is Nitroglycerin, that means ALL his sweat is nitroglycerin.) Even if Todoroki is nowhere near as skilled with his fire as he is with his ice. Todoroki is not without weakness. Deku found that during the Calvary battle. If you can stay on his fire side he won’t use, that creates a blind spot. And even though his quirk IS more or less without a recoil, he can screw up his body pretty easily by messing with his body temperature too much. And that makes him a bit more frail than most fighters in prolonged battles. Oh and emotional damage. LOTS of emotional damage. But he is ABSOLUTELY Bakugo’s weakness. Bakugo at the end in chains is one of the funniest animations in MHA. And there ARE competitors. But my goodness this one. At the very least he’s not heralding he’s unstoppable. He truly did want break through Todoroki to prove his quirk is better. I don’t think he understands how lucky he is Todoroki didn’t use his fire at all. In shonen anime it’s quite rare for the “rival” character to not have a satisfying finale win here. Because it’s too soon for the protagonist to overcome him. But this arc also takes a look at what rivals are. (And they make 3 rivalries to prove it.) Deku is probably Todoroki’s actual rival since they have mutual respect. Bakugo TRIES to rival Todoroki but is not succeeding. And Deku and Bakugo? Not even rivals. Don’t assume they are. Bakugo is the bully, Deku is his victim. And that’s a VERY long hole to crawl out of if at all. It’s not like other shows where characters like these will compete over everything. There’s always more to it underneath the surface. And this part of the show is where personalities are mastered and you see everyone here actually develop like actual people. Completely differently from adults, kids, and villains. And their emotional cores need development to get more strength. There’s always something to overcome. And Iida now is in the forefront of that with his brother being his core support, and he’s shaken beyond it all to be under attack. Because there is no character in this show you can truly write off as not important unless they aren’t even given a name. But that’s about it. Next time? The new arc begins.
@CupOfTaeWithAKookie Жыл бұрын
Just wanted to point out, that keeping in mind Bakugo is still a developing teenage boy, having a STADIUM of grown adults boo him must not be the best experience. He has an abrasive personality, but even then, he didnt deserve to be villainized to that extent by the crowd, and even the announcer, simply for putting effort into winning. That probably fueled his desire to prove himself to everyone, by defeating Todoroki at his best. Cuz to a crowd of people who see him as the boy who "bullied a frail girl", he didn’t need to have "the boy who won against a guy who didnt fight back," added to his impression.

Bakugo may think that he doesn't deserve help in the sence that he holds so high standards that when he fails it means that he is doing something wrong and not that maybe it's something that can only be handle by being a team... so yeah he doesn't see people help him he sees himself failing when receiving help

The fun thing with mha, is that they might not *really* kill a character off, but they’re will almost always be lasting consequences. Like Tensei being in a wheelchair or Deku fucking up his own arms. It may seem minor, but I love the details that go into things like that. Especially cuz they actively show the steps disabled and chronically ill folk have to take to help mitigate tendon or joint damage. It makes the character living a far more interesting story beat than if the character died from said injuries. Now the couple deaths that do happen, heartbreaking and genuinely tragic. It’s not like the walking dead (tv show, not games) were everyone is dying to the point you don’t get attached anymore. Or game of thrones, AOT, etc. and since humans as a species have evolved bc of quirks, it’s completely viable that the humans have evolved durability against things like temporary hyperspeed and the such God I love this world Horikoshi has created
