There are very short but amazing sequels to death note. One of them is Ryuk giving the note book to a different human in the world that knows about the note book existence, it involves the president at the time - Trump. Published recently by the death note's authors. The other one is about Light appearing in he shinigami realm after his death. It''s fanmade but amazing. Both manga are a few minutes of reading, but worth the time.

The decision to have Matsuda be the angriest at Light and even shoot him is just brilliant. Considering Matsuda was so lighthearted the entire show, seeing him so angry is powerful. Light’s death happened differently in the manga and was a lot more pathetic. The events started out the same, but diverged around the time he started calling out to Misa and Takada. After realizing that Light wasn’t God, instead of stabbing himself, Mikami just got angry and rejected him. Light never escaped the warehouse, and instead, he turned to Ryuk and started yelling for him to write everyone’s names in his notebook. Ryuk started writing and Light was about to celebrate until he revealed that he only wrote Light’s name down. He knew that relying on him meant that Light had no way to save himself, so he decided to just finish him there like how he did in the anime, but unlike his peaceful death in that version, manga Light spent his last moments on the floor begging Ryuk to undo it and saying he didn’t want to die. There was also another chapter focused on the task force that showed how the world changed after Kira’s death. (It’s also implied that Near may have “cheated” by using the notebook to control Mikami’s actions, because he mysteriously died in prison)

Come to think, there were a fair few points where Light could have benefited from exercising some restraint. Another massive mistake he made was killing Pember, since that was ultimately what got L to zero in on him. Light's death in manga was even more brutal and groveling than this. In the manga, Light turns to Ryuk and begs him to write everyone's names down on his notebook, promising him to show him something even more entertaining. Ryuk says ok and starts writing in his notebook, and everyone shoots at Ryuk (to no avail) as Light laughs and claims they'll all die. Ryuk then tells Light that he's actually writing Light's name in the notebook. He jumps at Ryuk to stop him but to no avail. After seeing his name written in the notebook, Light has flashback of the conversation from the time when he first met Ryuk. After Ryuk told him that person who used the notebook can go to neither heaven nor hell, Light tells him that he understands that it means that there's no such thing as heaven or hell in the first place. Ryuk is very impressed by this and confirms that there's no heaven or hell and that the only place that people go when they die is MU (nothingness). Light panics and quiver in fear as he doesn't want his existence to end in nothingness, until his 40 second is up and he dies.

The only thing I didn't like about this ending. It would have made more sense to say the SPK with all of its money and technology used a magical device known as a "printer" to scan and print out copied pages of the death note in the matter of minutes. All they'd need is to replace the ink cartridge with the same type of ink that Mikami had used to write in the Death Note, and replaced the paper disc with the same textured paper as the one of the deathnote. Shouldn't be too hard considering they were able to find those materials in the matter of a night.

You've finally reached the finale. Brad Swaile did an incredible job voicing Light throughout the series, but he went all-out for the end. That laugh is so iconic; it's grand and sinister, but tinged with madness and desperation. If you watch the Gundam Wing dub, you'll find he does a similar laugh at one point; I watched that when it first aired in 2000, so I watched all of Death Note just _waiting_ for him to pull off another one. Matsuda being the one to take down Light is such a brilliant bit of writing due to how ardent of a Kira fan he was, and especially how he confronted him over Chief Yagami. 6 years of stress, fear, and internal moral conflict, all unleashed in a moment of rage. That's aside from all the symbolism towards the end. As Light was trying to feebly escape his demise, he runs past a vision of who he could've been. He could've been anyone, done anything. But his vanity and god complex ruined it, and his choices sealed his fate long ago. Him dying halfway up a flight of stairs is a clever little detail. Especially when L reappears in Light's final moments, because _of course_ he'd be there. Also, I love the ending song. It's filled with melancholy and uncertainty; what will happen to the world now? What will people do? No one knows for sure, but the final notes tentatively hint at hope... Even as Ryuk - and thus the inevitability of death itself - looms overhead. Anyway, thank you for reacting to one of my all-time favorite anime series. Now you're moving on to Code Geass, _another_ one of my favorites. It's the perfect follow-up to Death Note. Let's just say you're going to be in for ride. See you out there!

I actually really liked Light as a Protagonist. He's just so unique in how far he's willing to go for his goals. He's willing to do dark things for his ambition without regret. But we also see moments where Light expresses his humanity. Like when he lost his memories for episodes 17-23. Or when he put aside the mission(symbolized by him dropping the pen) when his father died. The Light that cared for others was lost piece by piece until only Kira remained. In both a metaphorical and physical way, Light was a victim to the Death Note as well. And in his final moments, he saw who he was before all of this. Before he picked up the notebook. Millions of people were impacted by Kira, but he went out as Light Yagami.

The ending of Death Note had A large mixed reaction with people who hated Light loving the ending and people who rooted for Light hating the ending. That's why Death Note being the masterpiece that it is was never able to achieve a 9+ rating on any platform because of people who hated the ending review bombing It. It's unfortunate when a show has sides and people end up rooting for one side, they get too gung ho on wanting their side to win so bad that they don't care as much for the beautifully written story anymore and just want their beloved character to win. On the other hand, if Light won Light haters would be upset. Do you think the writer could have written the ending to satisfy both sides or is One side being happy and the other side being unhappy inevitable for these types of stories as it's not possible to satisfy both sides? I'm low-key afraid this might happen to Attack On Titan as there are many Eren supporters and Eren haters just like how it was for Light.

So, if they went a route like attack on titan (where both sides are right and wrong, and the more wrong side loses but the aftermath of that shows the 'wrong' side was actually right) I think they could've satisfied both sides. If say, after light's death they showed the world plunged back into war, crime and even worse murder rates it would've satified the light crowd because 'he was right all along even though he was wrong'. Some monologue from Ryuk or another shinigami about how the human world was never that peaceful again for a long time would've been a more definitive and neutral end.

Although subtle, this final episode actually hints at the idea that MISA might COMMITS SUICIDE, since she is standing on the rooftop of a building, PAST THE GUARD RAILS, as if she were about to jump ( 20:14 ), dress in her goth black attire with a somber expression. The object of her affection is gone, and she seems to find no more joy to go on. As a matter of fact, in the Manga, she does explicitly commit suicide writing in the Death Note "Misa Amane dies in Light Yagami's hands".

One thing that this show doesn't ever really grapple with is that the vast majority of crime is committed out of desperation, poverty or as a part of a cycle of systemic/personal abuse. When they say that crime has dropped 70% you have to imagine how many people are suffering in silence, starving or feel unable to extricate themselves from horrible conditions just letting the circumstances which create crime continue to wreck havoc and destroy lives Let's be clear violent crime is horrible, but most violent offenders aren't just born monsters who want to hurt people, they are forged into violent people through circumstances beyond their control. Ultimatley they are still responsible for their actions but criminals like that and the crimes they committed could have been avoided through social change not mass murder. Light of course wouldn't want that though, the only change he really wants is one that allows him to be the arbiter. Justice is not motivation for light it is the tool he uses to legitimize and justify his actions.
@MrRonzen Жыл бұрын
> the crimes they committed could have been avoided through social change not mass murder No, it couldnt. It is utopia like communism. Everyone knows that crimes and wars are bad. Did it stop them? No it is human nature, and not only humans. Circumstances? All people raised by circumstances, Hitler for example. So telling humans that the crimes are bad is not prevent them for doing crimes. Punishment does.
@mahamoon1917 Жыл бұрын
Omg! Finally some one who actually understands the whole idea was wrong from the beginning, I was against light the moment he got this idea in his head since the first episode. I study forensic psychology so naturally I’m more sympathetic to criminals and I try to defend them at court( the ones who are defendable) and I also believe some of the laws in our justice system should change. Light has a very Black and white type of thinking about world that people are either good or bad and people who committed crimes were automatically “bad people” and they deserve to die and of course this was coming from his god complex but world is not black and white, everything works on the shades of grey and some criminals are also the victims of society but just in different ways. Light was suffering from antisocial disorder and I don’t think death note was the thing that actually changed him it just gave him the opportunity to live up to his potential and made him be exposed to who he really is.
@overthinker1776 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but that doesn't justify them. Why should it? There are lots of poor people who aren't a criminal. If we, as a society, followed that reasoning, we should never punish those who take the easy way out and are a liability to others because they dedicate themselves to crime (especially the organized one).
@TheGreatDetectiveKnows Жыл бұрын
People trying to justify unethical activity is ridiculous; you can be poor and abused without killing or harming others. That simple fact tells you it is not a matter of psychological or economical reasons; otherwise we would all commit crime at the same degree of systemic oppression. You are spreading the false [popular] idea that we are all interchangeable and thus results of our circumstances. Whether or not you are agreeable or aggressive is a matter of genetics. The reason why a lot of people that are abused by their parents end up being criminals is because they share their parents DNA. The reason crime dropped 70% is because Light eradicated a large portion of genomes. There is an element of fear as well, but that is no different than before [being afraid of getting arrested] Additionally, that fear would apply to higher-ups as well given that Light has no problem punishing people with status and power especially when he added in that people must help their communities and other societal members. By the way, this is why men have a higher % of being criminals, they have more aggressive and dominant genes, along with greater variance in IQ level; if criminal activity was a matter of systemic oppression then there would be more women in prison than men. Unless the sociological crew starts to become men's activists I'm not inclined to hear this ridiculous POV lol. It's not sympathetic, liberal, or compassionate to side with oppressors [criminals] over actual victims of crime.

I just LOVE the scene where Light is on the ground calling out for Misa and Takada. That goes to show just how much he has fallen and how ''human'' he is. Light who have outsmarted everyone to this point and thought himself as a god experienced utter defeated and had to finally face his mortality and was TERRIFIED. He was so desperate that he wasn't even able to take a second to remember that neither Misa or Takada can help him and was just desperately crying for help from anyone he could think of, even from Misa that he always looked down on and saw as nothing but a tool. Light that made himself believe he is an invincible god that has the right to change the world and judge mankind fell THAT LOW and was that afraid of dying himself which brilliantly showed no matter how clever he was, how many opponents he outsmarted and how many people he killed, at the end of the day he was nothing but a mere mortal and a serial killer with an immensely deadly weapon just like Near said
@badbunny6008 Жыл бұрын
Matsuda's theory for those who don't know : Short answer : Near knew Light's plan and planned all events that led to Light's defeat. Long answer : This theory was actually brought up at the end of the manga books by Matsuda. He theorized that Near knew Light's plan from the beginning and used the Death Note to control Mikami before he headed to the warehouse. This would explain why Mikami didn't realize the notebooks had been switched. Knowing Light, he would have told Mikami to test the book before using it, since he already realized Near would try to switch out some pages. Also, in the manga it's said that Mikami died 10 days after Near caught Light. He didn't kill himself. He died in jail. If you read through the manga, Matsuda explains everything in detail. 28th January was the day Light met Near. 26th January around late morning to early afternoon is when Takada died. Near explains that Mikami had already written down names for the 27th and 28th right up to the time of the meeting in order to cover for the absence of Takada. The same names will be in the fake notebook and the people would've died. Thus, he had no reason to suspect foul play while they had a day and a half to create a replica. Here, Mikami's own caution and loyalty worked against him both by tipping off Near and stopping him from testing the note on the day of the meeting. Near alludes to this. If it hadn't been for Mello kidnapping Takada, Near would've died. Mikami was forced to act and made a mistake.

I think the interesting thing is that Matsuda sympathized with the idea of what Kira did in a vacuum, and that’s the thing: Light too started with good intentions. Even in this final episode he says “I understood that killing people was a crime”. But when he saw the full mental breakdown in front of him, he had to consider not only all that Kira had done, but that it was *Light* who did all that. That it led him to even killing or sacrificing people he seemed close to, like L and Takada. That was when he realized what that does to a person and that while Kira’s ideals were arguable on paper, this is the end result you arrive at if you follow that path. I think where his cognitive dissonance tipped over the event horizon was when he killed Lind L Taylor. That was the first time we see where he chooses his goals/power over the justifiable idea of punishing evil. His previous killings could be interpreted by some as morally justified (if somewhat dubiously so), but that was the point where he killed someone just for speaking against him. Where it stopped being a misguided sense of justice and started being, as Near put it, confusing oneself with a god.
@PrestigiousConman Жыл бұрын
But God wouldn’t need to kill people to make his points. He could eradicate all evil if he wanted to, that tells me that evil is meant to exist as a test for us humans. Light has a God complex as we all know he’s not actually a God. A true God wouldn’t waste his time deleting or killing evil, he would just end it and make everyone Saints.

I find the most satisfying thing about Light's defeat is that he was bested by a rookie detective. It is, without a doubt, a direct blow to Light's fragile and enormous ego, which emphasizes what I had previously commented: this is the result of having underestimated his rivals (that is, of being a narcissist). In the official Death Note guide, Light expresses his contempt for Mello and Near considering them inferior. He even pities L because his successors are pathetic. As exciting as the final sentence of the second chapter is, it is actually an empty sentence since neither Light nor L have any real convictions about justice. Light's justice is arbitrary and capricious. Basically everyone who is against him is unfair. L, on the other hand, is willing to challenge and break the laws and human rights in order to prove his theories. In other words, the fight between Light and L is not about justice (that debate belongs to the people who watch this show), it is a fight of egos. What sets L apart from Light is that he has the decency to admit that he just wants to beat Kira at his game. On the other hand, Mello is mainly motivated by defeating Near and proving that he is better (his second motivation of him would be to avenge L). Hence, he does not hesitate to break the law as his mentor, L. And Near just wants to solve the case. Yes, he doesn't care much for justice either, but in that sense, he acts as a functionary of the system. He always stuck to the laws. That's why I like to interpret this ending as the victory of true justice (the system represented through Near and his organization) over the absurd justice of Light. I think the only thing that bothers me about this conclusion (even more so than the fact that Giovanni forged the Death Note in an entire night) is that I don't see the point in Mello's change in motivation. At what point did he mature? When and why did he realize that the important thing was to catch Kira and that it didn't matter if he or Near took the credit, so he had to put aside his childish and stupid rivalry with Near? That's when you notice that the weakest thing in this anime is its characters and that the author wasn't kidding when he said that he wanted his story to be entertaining and simple. It's the fans and their interpretations that have made Death Note deeper than it really is. I must say that although I aesthetically like the ending of the anime, I think the ending of the manga is better since we see Light for what he is: a pathetic and cowardly worm who at the last moment discovers his mortality and implores for his life. Anyway, I loved embarking on this journey with you. I'm sure Montana will love to see Kira falls. I applaud that Montana was able to guess the role of Mikami. She was absolutely right (gosh, guys! I respect you deductive ability and admire you attention to detail, you are the example to follow in this type of content). We'll see each other at Code Geass, where I'll be sharing curiosities and some opinions. There you will see a protagonist with true convictions.

Light wasn't pathetic though. He was shot several times and the pain and despair of having lost his entire future and the better future of the world of which he rules is enough to make any grown man bawl out of frustration and loss. If I started flaying your mother alive would it then be appropriate to call her pathetic for crying on the ground? You're being facetious. Kira knew that if he died before finding a successor the world would simply go back to the much more "rotten" state it was in before. Even in despair and defeat Light tried twice to kill his enemies, that's the mark of campion or hero.

I don't know if I'd say it's a fact, maybe an interpretation of imagery. However you should note that nobody goes to heaven or hell (it doesn't exist), they all go to nothingness, so Light isn't special in that regard.

@@Jaker788 My theory has always been that people who use the notebook become Shinigami who live in a dead world where life can't prosper. In my head canon Light becomes a shinigami and then rules the world in his immortality for all years to come, acting as the invisible hand of justice in the world. A god in name and deed.

Hi! I'm from Brazil. Death Note is my favorite anime. I loved following you throughout the episodes, seeing how you reacted and talked about the story. 🖤

The manga has a different ending and has a one-shot sequel that is very fun.

Misa? Oh she dead.😂 You mean when you all “lose everything,” you just go up a tower and stand on the precipice edge just to enjoy the view? 🙂 Loved watching this series again with you all!

At the very at end feel like Light looked relieved it was over & finally was able to admit that to himself, especially after the implication he "saw"/remembered L.

I just realized if he let them arrest him at some point in the car ride he could probably have written names from the watch and potentially gotten away
@muhammadeyssa23648 Жыл бұрын
Do I even have to explain how this wouldn’t work? FIRSTLY Ryuk would’ve probably written his name down there lmao 😂 and secondly they would’ve been watching the whole time as Near would’ve told them his process so they would’ve even taken the watch lmao 😂
@angelb33ts Жыл бұрын
@@muhammadeyssa23648 Near didn't know about the watch until he shows his hand by reaching for it. Light panics a lot throughout the series which is why he gets caught over and over.

Reminder that Misa, from the beginning until the very end of the story, never went against Light's will. She always did precisely that he asked. She was easily his best ally, and the singular reason he lost is because he entrusted the Death Note to a person other than Misa. I swear she's the most underrated character like ever

15:40 And Light knows it, too, deep down There's a reason he calls her name first

Lmao this is just factually incorrect. Someone must have forgotten the entire first discussion between Misa and Light.

I love how they kept in the theme of light being seen as a god up until his end. Which is furthered by the fact that his actions weren’t what caused his own downfall but by a follower of his. So it’s like Light is perfect and can do no wrong but regular humans on the other hand…
