I feel like the Chimeras even eventually see the brothers as genuine kids who they have to look out for, since they've lost their own families at this point pretty much :( the brothers almost become adoptive sons that they look after or try too at least, despite everyone's best efforts to put themselves in danger XD

It’s one of the bigger themes in that mercy and kindness though they may come at a price are also often the best path

I think the show walks a line where Ed's lack of willingness to kill anyone is shown as both admirable and naive in some cases. In this case in particular it's definitely leaning towards naive, considering they had no way to make Kimblee give information to them and Ed got seriously hurt in this confrontation. But this also serves to show that Ed is not willing to break his principles for anyone and he, without question, pays the price of his actions by taking a few years off of his lifespan to heal himself. Him always sticking to these principles can be frustrating in some cases, but I believe it's still quite admirable.

Fun fact: the scene where ed got impaled was inspired because the author had given birth to her child and wanted to implement what she went through into the manga. Honestly not 100% sure why she added the scene and how long she gave birth before writing the scene but she did say that the scene was inspired be giving birth

I really like what they do with the chimera soldiers in this series. In most series, they would be mid-boss type enemies, overcome after a struggle, and then quickly forgotten. Instead, FMA:B humanizes them. They have family and friends, they're unaware of the larger scheme of the villains, and they're willing to help out and show mercy and honor.

25:13 - This is handled really interestingly. While we know that Kimblee is probably way too dangerous to live - and Ed's refusal to kill almost cost him his life - Ed turned out to be 100% correct about his men (the chimeras). They flipped the SECOND they realized Kimblee just regarded them as expendable tools. And it was primarily them that Ed was concerned about when talking to Miles.

i think that also brings into view the reason i think he is so dead set on not killing them. if this is the price that is exacted for showing mercy what would the price be for choosing to take their lives. law of equivalent exchange says it has to be equal in value to those lives,

Apparently the Scene whit Ed healing himselfe was inspired by Arakawa giving birth. She apparently did not enjoy the Experience. 5:00 What I enjoy is, while Kimbley and Miles do not have the same perspective as Ed, sparing Enemys, they do not look down on him for it. They might call it naive, but there mostly just warning him of the drawbacks he might face. But he ultimatically won. He stuck to his Guns and didnt complain when it came back to bite him, but in return Kimbleys Man joined his Cause.

Since the original comic was a monthly publication, Ed was kept with a steel frame stuck in him for a month, and we readers were left in the lurch. We were not fazed.🤣 And the title of this episode is "the abyss," but in Japanese it is written "奈落. The word "奈落" also means "abyss," but it also means "trap cellar of a stage set. It's the pit for the actors to hide under the stage.

26:15 Kimblee is not the joker though. Sure they are both psychopaths but where the Joker is basically annoyed by the fact that batman won't kill and wants to tear him down to his own level. Kimblee has a certain respect for Ed's philosophical position. He clearly has a lot more respect for Ed's absolute position than he has for the the relativist positions of someone like Mustang.

It seemed like Barry the Chopper's body couldn't die until his soul returned to it since it wasn't until Barry's body scratched off the soul seal that Barry's soul snapped back and he immediately died. Based on that, since Ed's body was supporting Al's body, the moment Ed was physically close to death, the pull on Al's soul to snap back and die in his body was SO strong. Al's blood seal is literally playing tug o war with his soul and might have saved his life, had he returned to his body for good at that point in time.... Scary to think about.

This episode is personally my favorite in FMAB. From Ed's unwavering convictions, to the scenery, and the voice acting is next tier imo. I could go on and elaborate but I'm sure that's not necessary. A couple other things. It never really gets brought up in the anime of the connection between Ed nearly losing his life and Al falling unconscious. That's one of them moments were it's information exclusively for the viewers to dissect and interpret for themselves. And another neat thing that I never picked up on before. When Kimbly ordered his to men to check for traps, he mentions about them picking up on scents foreshadowing a heightened sense of smell from the 2 of them. Surprised I never caught that before.

Just goes to show those Chimeras are keeping whats left of their humanity by helping Ed. They could have just saved themselves and left him to die even after he pulled them out of the rubble. But they chose the humane path and saved a life since a life a saved them. Its such a good way to represent that even though you may not be human outside you can still choose to keep what left of your humanity on the inside and thats what truly defines you.

i think the reason for his refusal to kill stems from the law of equivalent exchange. in this show they make a point it is not just alchemy but the guiding principal of the world, of truth itself. if he takes someone's life what price will he have to pay.

I’m not going to do a full episode analysis today. As there is only one scene I can ever think about in this episode. The scene at the end where Ed is using his lifeforce is in my top 3 individual moments of FMAB. I can’t say if it’s top 2, but it’s not my number 1. (And we gotta wait for it.) Not only is the scene brilliant, but if it’s an entirely different experience when you’re an empath. I get short of breath and feel genuine stomach pain when I see that scene EVERY time. And while it hurts, I LOVE that a FICTIONAL STORY gets that feeling to come out. That just means that the episode TRULY knew what it was doing. And every time I am downright CERTAIN of how a character feels, it is just so empowering in its own way. It’s just an astounding moment.

What inlove about eds decisión it's that while happened un a extreme moment he still was there and Made a totally concious decisión, he actually thought about it before, it wasnt a power up por when protagonist gets unconcipis and unlock some kind of potential, here ed basically tried his hardest to remember a specific info of truth and using Om his resolve of not using a philosopher stoner to heal himself, it it's not just a stubborn prideful decisión, it was a sensible and moral decisión Made with Focus and conviction, that difference make a huge difference between Ed and other mc shonen

I don't think Kimbly specifically wants to test others he just holds others to the same incredibly high standard he holds himself. He's a killer he takes pride in killing and does it well, he's obsessed with people fulfilling their roles and that's the role that he has chosen to fill. That's why he was impressed with winry's parents because doctors should help people and why ultimately he's impressed with Ed who never compromises his moral stance. But Kimbly is ultimately still a selfish creature who wants to fulfill his own purpose above All Else, which is literally serving his Masters and killing who he's commanded to

Even if they had found the Stone before Ed healed himself, he wouldn't have used it. If he's not going to use a Philosopher's Stone to fix his and Al bodies, he's definitely not going to use one just to patch up a hole in his stomach.
