Super groovy bassline from Mark King from the 1984 album. Played on the status much like the one he played on the album.

OMG...yes, thank you! I was wondering if you were gonna tackle this classic album track from one of my favorite L42 albums. You NAILED it right on the money, I have a lot to work on *lol*. I got a beautiful 2018 Status S3 headless bass that has that tone but with a different eq set up. I've always wanted to work on that song but man what Mark King is playing on the verses...insane but you sound great man. Did you ever cover "Easy" by Nik Kershaw?

Haha, thanks so much! It is a cracker of a bassline and the status is so punchy on it! I have not done a cover of Easy yet, but don’t worry, I do intend on covering it in the future. I still need to wait on a bass I’ve got on order. Wonder what it could be….

Solid playing, and man that TONE! What's the neck profile like on that thing? Looks like it's kinda chunky.

Thanks, the pickups do pack a punch! It’s not that thick, I’d consider it to be line that of a jazz bass, until around the 12th fret where it becomes very thick around the back where the carbon becomes the same width as the body, but I got used to it quick. Besides from that, I don’t know what to say really, I’m no expert on neck shapes but I’d say it’s thin on the lower frets and thick on the upper.

@iv4nbass Thanks for the reply. I was referring more to the thickness and shape from the back of the neck to the fretboard, rather than the width. It looks like there's a decent amount of room between the bridge saddles, easy to get your fingers in to do some work. I've run into some otherwise superb instruments like Alembics that barely widen from the nut width and consequently feel very crammed and not much fun to play. I don't understand how guys like Mark King and Stanley Clarke can do it, but somehow they do. *Shrugs*

On the lower frets, the thickness of the neck is rather thin and fast. It isn't a c shape, I think it's what's known as a D, if that's not a thing that's how I'd describe it. On the higher frets it becomes a lot thicker from the fretboard to the back of the neck (around the 15th fret) and it becomes super thick and more of a C shape. When I first played it, my thought was: wow the neck by these upper frets is insanely thick. It is chunky as hell up there, but it feels surprisingly good.

@@iv4nbass Thank you for the very thorough description. Seeing as you like carbon, if you dig more shallow, sleeker neck profiles, I recommend you check out older Modulus Quantums (TBX, if you can find one), or a Schack. Personally, I find Shack's instruments to be of a higher quality than Modulus, though the latter is no slouch, by any means. Keep getting the good notes.

Ooh I’ve never heard of Schack, I’ll have to look into it. Would definitely love to expand my experience on different basses!
