I'm a former BAE/Hawker technician and I have to recommend "King Dick" BSW wrenches. They're much more affordable than snap-on as long as you don't need the box-end style, which I didn't because almost all of the BSW on the Hawker 125 is the hydraulic plumbing.

Whitworth thread has a 55 degree included angle thread form, whereas UN is 60 degree. Metric threads are also 60 degree. UN stands for Unified National. UNC and UNF are the most common, with Extra Fine and Special Series also available. AN was American National, superceded in 1949? and interchangeable with UN thread form.

Hi AgentJayZ, Your comment that the GE F404 engine gives twice the thrust of that dear old Avon rang an alarm bell in my head, as it did not square up with the figures I have stored in there for the EJ200 engine. The EJ200 gives around 13,500lb max dry thrust and 20,000lb in reheat, for a weight of around 2,200lb. I've taken a quick look at the performance figures for an F404, as given in that fount of all knowledge, Wikipedia. In there, it gives a max dry (military) thrust of 11,000lb and 17,000lb in afterburner, with a dry weight of 2,282lb. I imagine that later versions (and the F414) give significantly more thrust, but 11,000lb thrust is certainly not twice 12,200lb. The weight figure I have for an Avon Mk533 (aka, RA.29/6) is 1,578kg (or 3,478lb in old money), which is around 52percent heavier than the F404. However, I don't know what the differences are between a Mk531B and a Mk533 (which was the basis for the Industrial Avon), with a T/O thrust rating of 12,725lb. Does the engine you have there have a 17-stage compressor and 3-stage turbine? My suspicion is that it might have a 16-stage compressor and 3-stage turbine. However, you probably won't know unless and until you open it up. On second thoughts, if the intake annulus dimensions are identical to those of an Industrial 1533, with which you are familiar, then it must have a 17-stage compressor. The design of the later marks of Avon stretched into the 1950s and, although the stage loading was increased, which did make the aerofoils rather more "aggressive", it was the addition of compressor stages that increased the pressure ratio and hence the performance. And the one feature that significantly improved the Avon compressor from the 200 series onwards? It was the adoption of the compressor aerodynamics of the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire. The old hands at R-R IMD Ansty, with whom I worked as a young designer, were very smug about that. PS As the nameplate identifies it as a Mk531B, I think that this identifies it as a civil engine. My understanding (as confirmed by Wikipedia) is that 500 series engines were the civilian equivalents to the military 200 series. What its application would have been, I've no idea.

It seems like the B/S wrenches are marked based on the size of the threaded part of the fastener. Like how the 1/4 B/S is for a 1/4” bolt even though it fits the head that’s bigger than 1/4”. I guess it makes sense because nuts/bolts are sized based on the thread size and pitch.

The 3 standards I know of are BS, BA, and British Whitworth. BTW I have the entire set of Snap on British wrench’s for my future Bug Eye Sprite project. I also have a great used set of huge King Dick Whitworth wrenches that a VC10 crew gave me while I was servicing VC-10’s at IAD.

G'day, Ah, well, that's a sad story about the Avon Bearings. It reminds me of the 1970s when there were Dh-82 Tiger Moth Rebuilds & Restorations & Maintenance Projects all over the World being stalled for want of a Fuel Tank. Tiger Tanks are the Structural Load-bearing Upper Centre-Section, onto which the upper Wingspars attatch... Made of a specially formulated out of production antique style of Aluminium Alloy ("Elektron"), Roller-corrugated Chordwise, heat-treated, Roller-formed into a thick Aerofoil Profile, Welded up, and then Heat-Treated again. And the British Rollers were destroyed during WW-2, while the Canadian & Australian Rollers were scrapped and destroyed after Japan surrendered. So in 1979 if one put a Tiger Moth on it's Back, however gently ; that would buggar the Tank and the Airframe was a write-off. Eventually the owners of all the Tankless Tigers conspired to form a Consortium and pooled their money, commissioned a Roll of the correct Alloy the correct thickness, and paid for the Rollers to correctly corrugate the Metal and have it heat-treated and formed, welded, and heat-treated again. And they thus "cornered the market" on Tiger Moth Fueltanks. Aircraft Jet-Engine Roller-Bearings for a 70 year-old Military Aeroplane...; The techical specifications required are orders of magnitude more difficult to meet, and the potential to amortise Costs is TINY. I'm guessing that, with you withdrawing from the fray ; once news gets out, then the price of Go-able/Flyable spare Orendas will spike, and not long after that - the Market will see a veritable Glut of currently-flyable Sabres which might have had "some appreciable value" while ever their Engine could conceivably be "simply booked in for Overhaul" or even "traded in for a freshly overhauled unit). Unless those Owners gather together and source some other supply of those Bearings..., and some other person as talented, experienced, and paperworked-up to sign-off on the Paperwork required to fly in the Sky as you have been...; then ALL their shiny little Fighterpilot Fantasies will be LUCKY to finish up being Donated to some Museum which can afford to house them indoors gathering Dust, instead of going mouldy in the Parking Lot while waiting to be cut up & melted down.... Welcome to Progress, Apparently. I did tell you, years ago, that Global Warming is Winning. I disagree with the Project, which is why I've voted Against proceeding with Global Industrial-scale Atmospheric Fossil-Carbon Emissions, since 1980 ; when I first complied with our Compulsory Voting Laws. So, at least this latest Shitty Weather Has only been a little bit Of the results of my Doings....; and the Fossil Carbon which I've been responsible for burning. Of course, that makes me something of an observing Outlier. Which, in my estimation; is probably better than being a competing contestant, in the Great (Lemming) Race to Get Ahead...? Will you still be involved in the Experinent with the 3-D Printed Compressor & Turbine Blades ? Time will tell, One supposes. Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

Singapore has had some early A-4 Skyhawks refurbished and upgraded from the old J65 to a F404 (w/o afterburner). That's practical for a government.. might still be too costly for a private owner of a warbird. I'd hate to see the F-86 warbirds not fly again... they are gorgeous aircraft! (more info on the Singapore Skyhawks here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ST_Aerospace_A-4SU_Super_Skyhawk )

ratride, the F-86F is an excellent design from North America Aviation, the people who made the Mustang, and later the X-15. It used the GE J47 engine, which produced about 5500 lbs of thrust. The Sabre 6 is a license built version of the F86, built by Canadair Aviation. It used the Orenda 14 engine, which produced about 7200 lbs of thrust. Because all engines are introduced at different times, and performance advances with every month or so, there really are no "equivalent" engines.
