This is the Bellambi Lane level crossing at Bellambi, New South Wales. It is located on the South Coast line in the northern suburbs of Wollongong. Since filming this video in November 2019 the pedestrian crossing has been fitted with four additional WCH e-bells and I will be returning to film them for part 2 of this video.
The current signals were installed on May 7, 2006 and replaced the original gated signals which featured GRS/WRRS Type B gate mechanisms and dated back to the early 1960's. Both of the current signals have Western Cullen Hayes bases, Western Cullen Hayes gate mechanisms, Alstom/United Group LED lights and Western Cullen Hayes electronic bells which replaced the previous WCH mechanical bells around two years ago. The bell on the eastern signal rings from start up until the gates have lowered, while the western bell rings until the gates rise.
At the time of filming the bells were switched off at night between 10pm and 6am and the crossing was silent during those times, although this has now most likely changed with the new pedestrian crossing e-bells being installed.
The pedestrian crossing has Magnetic Autocontrol swing gates and Aldridge don't walk lights. Due to Bellambi station having an island platform there are two pairs of pedestrian gates which activate separately for each track.
Train information:
1st freight: 9138 containers from Bomaderry to Enfield, with locomotives 8234, 8240 and 8232. Filmed on November 17, 2019.
The heritage passenger train is the Kiama Picnic Train which was running from Sydney to Kiama and return, with locomotive 42103. The train is first seen heading south to Kiama and then is later seen returning north to Sydney. Filmed on November 17, 2019.
2nd freight: 9122 cement from Port Kembla to Clyde, with locomotives 8138 and 8144. Filmed on November 18, 2019.

The gates definitely take their time to lower but I suppose it’s to make sure cars have enough time to move off the crossing if they’re stuck. Completely different story here in Vic. Awesome work :)

Nice video, with many activations at different times. Thanks for sharing. I believe there is footage of this crossing with its original equipment on the video “86 Class, final years” during a segment that followed 8646 on “the final revenue electric loco tour” to Kiama.

Nice to see 42103 has the same R5ST horn as the V/Line N Class Locomotives. Great crossing, I wish we had Western Cullen Hayes E bells in Victoria. They sound a lot more pleasant to the ears compared to a set of Safetran Type 3's!

Really great video! Just thought I’d point out a couple of the lights being at a downwards angle, would you happen to know the reason for this? That heritage train was a nice catch too, though hopefully you don’t run into foamers while filming them in the future :)
@McKHAust
@McKHAust 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think those lights pointing downward may have been the result of vandalism that was never properly fixed. Yes hopefully I can steer clear of the foamers :)

Hey mate! Fantastic video! I aspire to have a bell collection like yours someday! By the way, do you possibly know what shape the Mck&H teardrop bell gong ringer is shaped? Is it like a WCH cylinder shaped style, or a round shape?
