Great video! Glad to see the old signals were retained, even if they've been pretty well modernized over the years. Looks like the gate lights are also still incandescent, interestingly enough.

Oh nice, you filmed this crossing. Thanks for doing it. :) Bit of trivia, this crossing originally had Safetran m-bells.

Yes I've seen old pictures showing the Safetran bells, wish they were still there. Pretty sure this was the first crossing on the section between Geelong/Ballarat and Serviceton to get gated signals, followed by Dimboola. Amazing that some original equipment still survives.

@@McKHAust Actually, there were three crossings in the Ballarat area that got gated signals in 1959 (Doveton Street, Creswick Road, and Burbank Street). Also, back in the BG days, it was common for interstate trains (including The Overland) to run via Bacchus Marsh. BTW, there's an image online from the early 1980s showing High Street in Dimboola with Westinghouse HB gate mechs and a McK&H Teardrop bell. It's on the Victorian Railways site from memory.

@@TrickyMario7654 I meant Stawell was the first gated setup excluding the town crossings at Geelong and Ballarat, yes before gauge conversion the line through Ballarat was considered the main line and the route via Cressy was a secondary corridor. I've seen those old pictures of High Street, the HB mechs didin't last long because they were replaced by the mid 2000's, although they were always a more maintenance intensive product and are prone to leaking hydraulic fluid so it makes sense why they were replaced.

@@McKHAust Thanks for clarifying what you meant then, and I’m glad you’ve seen those old images of High Street, Dimboola. I believe the line via Bannockburn was also sometimes used for interstate trains, so there were actually two “secondary routes” prior to the gauge conversion. In fact. most passenger trains to and from Dimboola in the late 1980s until they were axed in 1993 used the Geelong-Ballarat line (the exceptions being the morning UP service from Dimboola on Monday-Saturday and all Sunday services).

@@TrickyMario7654 It makes sense why they chose the route via Cressy to become the main line for standard gauge owing to the much easier gradients for freight, but it certainly reduced the passenger connectivity to many towns.
