Loved this video. When I was a kid at boarding school in Ballarat in the 70s I used to take the Dimboola train to Ararat, then take the Portland train to Glenthompson, where I grew up. Unfortunately, the Ararat-Portland train no longer exists, as far as I know.

I notice Ararat and Stawell yards just a shell now. They were once a hive of activity ..Same for most of the entire Victorian system.Sad indeed.

really nice - since Western Vic is relatively flat, are you making small and infrequent notch movements to keep at a steady speed?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER4 жыл бұрын
It appears flat, but it's actually somewhat undulating, nothing steep u til you get between Ararat and deep leed, then it's 1 in 50s and in a 3000t+ train you notice it, same with the undulating terrain. Unless you are in full power, you are always moving the throttle to maintain speed and plan ahead for up and downhill runs.

@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Thank you - maybe you can do a video from Ararat to Deep Lead to show us the 1/50 grades - that would be really cool.

Wow, you have been at this a while. You mention broad guage. How does the width of your rails compare to US? Also, do you use concrete ties?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER3 жыл бұрын
Yes we have broad gauge which is 5'3" we also have standard gauge too. Yes we use concrete sleepers/Tues here as well as wood, plastic and steel.
@bigman42252 жыл бұрын
standard gauge is the same as uk us etc. broad gauge is 5 foot and 3 inches

What's the procedure for blowing your horn at a crossing in Australia?
@legass4206 жыл бұрын
santoro2020 depends which state and if its in a city or not. In Victoria trains often blow twice at a level crossing sometimes its a long blast and then a short blast.
@scoobycarr55584 жыл бұрын
Here in the USA it's two long, one short and one long toot

@@johnpro2847 music is legal atleast in victoria and its just a ge so you arent hearing much because the loco has lots of soundproofing too
@UPWesternRailroading10 жыл бұрын
Do you not blow for crossings down in Australia??? Here in the states they would fire us for not blowing two long a short and a long for each crossing. Also, are you allowed to listen to music down there? They have completely banned all electronics here.....so no music.....we do it anyway, but pretty soon inward facing cameras are coming......I don't know if I will even want to work for Union Pacific anymore when that day comes. Maybe I can get hired on down there and ditch this over-regulated tyrannical shit hole that was once called the United States.
@johncallahan24909 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's a rural thing. I live in Melbourne, Victoria, and I always hear them blow their horns coming into crossings.
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER9 жыл бұрын
Michael Lindsey yes we do, but if its clearly seen there are no vehicles, animals, or people on or near the line, some drivers dont use the whistle in those situations.

Pretty cool to see the broad gauge trackage.
@vsvnrg32636 жыл бұрын
paul g. o'neil pretty cool to see it gone as far as i'm concerned. the multiple gauge scourge has cost the australian economy zillions of dollars over the years and could have been the reason we might have all been speaking japanese now had the country been conquered in the second world war. and it's the main reason there are so many trucks on country roads today.
@nihongo023415 жыл бұрын
Australia is a bit more relaxed about it. No Federal Railroad Administration. But we have been privatizing railways here in the last 20 years.... We should have stricter codes. I guess a driver would get fired if they were told to and continued not to do so. But the Pacific National drivers seem to be a bit more pro active on this than other railways. As Aussie says, they don't really have to.... and no one cares unfortunately. But we do have lots of accidents and derailments and we have had a lot of accidents with trucks. But still nothing is done. It should be mandatory like the USA. Set a standard.
