We are ready to announce another session of Level Up!
This time we will have the chance to interview Raphael Lacoste!
Raphael Lacoste works for Ubisoft as Brand Art Director and is the main driving force behind the visual universe of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise.
Raphael has also worked as a Matte Painter and Senior Concept Artist on such feature films as: Terminator Salvation, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Death Race, Immortals 2011, Repo Men, Jupiter Ascending...

What is it?
Level Up! is an idea of two Polish artists - Wojtek Fus and Darek Zabrocki, who want to teach people and learn from each other. Recently, Level Up has expanded its host team with the amazing Jonas De Ro! Join weekly, 2-hours long livestreams with critiques, overpaintings and Q&A’s with industry professionals.
It’s free and open for everybody!
What is it not?
Level Up! is not a self-promotion platform. Though we love all good art, this group is not the place to shop for likes and followers. If you are a professional and want to share your work, please ask for critiques, overpaints or feedback, or try to explain about your work in a way that teaches others. Start a dialogue so that everyone can benefit!

Great series. One thing I noticed is the first couple are more instructional (Color theory etc.) and the interviews, while giving lots of great information are less structured, so harder to learn specific things from. Do you plan on doing any more instructional videos, theory etc? thanks

Just a comment about matte painting. The reason why you see so much photorealistic matte painting is because that is what is demanded by studios. If you're creating a backdrop for a WWII period piece, there isn't a whole lot of room for artistic flourishes. The matte painting we see for personal work online is looks more like environment concepts to me. It's different than the photorealistic mattes required from environment supervisors in a vfx pipeline.
