It's absolutely criminal that you only have 35k subscribers. Each time I watch a video of yours I learn at least 10 new things (some from what you're talking about, some from just watching you listen, adjust and react to things). Greetings from Sweden :)

I love how your videos are investigations into the phenomena that end up providing perspectives and lines of evidence on either traditional methods or novel methods that you develop. The conversational instruction is really helpful because it helps me follow your journey of discovery. Thank you! The audio examples are critical to be able to assess what you're doing, and these are really well done.

This is something I discovered by working on API 560s too. Same frequency setup. I think the MXR 10 band eq as well. But instead of pushing one or cutting the other, I tend to favor doing a little less of both. A small dip at 500 and a tiny boost at 2k etc. Great stuff as always Nick!

If cutting one side is an option to boosting the ying yang opposite. What about applying half the cut you would apply on the ying and half the gain on the yang? So applying a bit of both with a ‘see-saw/ying yang’ mindset.

This is often exactly how it's used .... I think nick was just exploring the outter edges of this effect and what each end does in comparison to the other. It very much depends on the song if it needs one/the opposite, or both together. They all have their own use cases depending on the source material. ;)

Spot on! I was going extreme on examples for demonstative purposes, but often I’ll pair boosts and cuts together

two questions reflexions you brought to me now (even if i already knew bob katz ying yang) are: 1) eq do also affect the decay of frequencies in that range (as ultimately they can self-oscillate), are the differences we perceive not also linked to these frequency dependent decay shifts the eq induces? Woud interesting to test with white noise bursts 2) eq also rotate phase, hence the correlation and transients impacts at corner frequency, this is also something to keep in mind. In fact i sometimes could "fix" muddy mixes just with all pass filter at the frequency range i hear the mudd... Would be interesting to do the same test but with linear phase eq....

Good observations regarding the finesse/detail. The general application at least shown for demonstration here with 3dB boosts showcases the tonal shifts/considerations, less so than the implementation.

I've seen similar sort of snippets of this thought process from others, but never seen the entire cut/boost pairings layed out all one after another like that in a vid before. It's really super useful knowlage, and even if not using the ying yang cut/boost .. it just gets you thinking about the low/high energy relationship as a whole, and how for example boosting the high end might not be the best way to get air in a mix (if it's already a bit harsh up there for example), and there's always other ways to aproach things that might actually sound a ton better (and also possibly fix other issues at the same time as a result, if chosen carefully enough). ;)

One thing I can tell for sure, I always cut -1db during mastering session exactly at 160hz, I don't know what kind of black magic that is, but you can immediately hear how cleaner and tighter your master sounds right away.
@soulofwaves
@soulofwaves 5 күн бұрын
I've heard that there's a psychoacoustic technique to make the low end feel bigger and tighter and that is to make a small cut around the 2nd lower octave, which is around 120-180 hz
@Limit5482
@Limit5482 5 күн бұрын
If you can “always” do the exact same thing with the exact same outcome you are most likely eqing your room not the track itself. 160hz can clean up some mud for sure but it can also push the snare back or even the bottom of some brass and bass. The only case I would say “always” is if you mixed the tracks as well in your room

One thing with that move it you have to listen to how the vocal pops out. Cutting too much in this region can unglue a vocal in a mix too much and bring it forward in an unnatural way.

What am I missing here? Why is boosting at 4k the equivalent of attenuating at 250Hz? Not sure what principle this is. "Relative energy points"? huh?

love the content! Can you please make a video about what file types each streaming service needs? I saw your video about deliverables where you displayed a screenshot of the formats for Apple Digital and high-res distribution, but I feel like I’m missing some important info. It will be super helpful if you could explain the best file types to upload for platforms like KZbin, Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc. Should we stick with 24-bit? Downsample to 44.1 kHz? I’d love to know the reasoning behind the subject so i can get the best quality on all platforms :) Thanks!

I noticed your weight loss. I wanted to commend you on it; if it is intentional! 🎉 I have recently taken back my health as well. Sitting in a chair long periods of time is extremely unhealthy for the human body. That's why on sessions I incorporate stopping points to do small exercises in between. Surprisingly it is actually refreshes your ears. You'd be very surprised on what you pick up on when you return.
