Wendell hinted at this when he got into the BIOS, but I'm fairly certain this is in fact just a Minisforum UM790 with a different label on it. Identical board and port layout from what I can tell. Nothing wrong with that (I have a UM790 I'm quite happy with), but it does feel a bit odd to have two videos covering the same machine a year apart.

I'm certain of this as well. The only significant difference I'm noting is that the case bottom is flatter in the UM790. This might be due to a larger fan in the Reatan, and also might explain the poor bluetooth reception in the Reatan. I'm very pleased with both of my UM790s, which were purchased barebones for

I bought one of those over the Summer to be an HTPC/light couch gaming rig, but quickly returned it because the Linux kernel has no ALSA ucm use-case profile for 5.1 surround with the 780m. Also it has no oculink connector. It's a nice beefy processor tho.

@Wendell, thanks for pointing out that it has BT signals inside the metal case trying to get out. Don't know why it doesn't have a BT/WIFI antenna on the back like Lenovo & other SFFs do.

9:10 I know you've called out the account requirement in general on many occasions but I'm really glad you're calling out the specific security issues for multi system users. *NOTHING* is 100% worthy of trust and the idea that you need to give every Windows machine you own total control of your Microsoft account (and through that all your other machines) is a ridiculous idea that runs completely antithetical to the actually good security other parts of Microsoft are doing with things like Secured-core (that secure core means diddly squat if someone can get into the PC through a compromised MS account).

Very good. Nice to see USB4 offerings, can only ask for 10G and DP which sadly lacks on many. That said, I'd wish everything, desktop, start using Type-C only. I'm curious to see Strix Halo and what form factors that will be.

Why are there no AMD mini PCs with 10G?
@Rushil694206 күн бұрын
Cooling/cost? They'd most likely have to use an M.2 to 10gbe RJ45 adapter like the Zimacube pro.
@stephenreaves32056 күн бұрын
@Rushil69420 I mean Intel has them. Like the MinisForum MS-01 vs MS-A1. AMD boards have always been lacking compared to Intel, regardless of which chip is better
@Catchgate6 күн бұрын
@@stephenreaves3205 Exactly, this is more MSA1 than MS01. Id love a lower cost (somehow, dont know how that would work) MS01 with 10gb, but then on Proxmox I only host Plex and Nextcloud anyway so 🤣 I really hope that Minisforum, or another company, really zones in on that 'homelab high-speed mini PC' that we're all waiting for and gets it right.

I suspect the target market doesn’t generally need 10G. From a product design perspective we go for the 80%, that’s what typically lands on the final revision. If we can save BOM cost, manufacturing time, thermal emission and any additional power savings at the cost of 10-20% market, it’ll usually win. Also: Intel makes their own Ethernet controller chips.

But... ECC memory? I have noticed a lot of people, not just you Wendell, who have been recommending building NAS type units without ECC RAM. Is this a thing?
@bosstowndynamics54886 күн бұрын
Building NAS units without ECC RAM is a bit of a pushback against the zealotry that sometimes happens among the ZFS enthusiasts - ECC RAM is great to have but the error rate of non ECC RAM is pretty damn low already and for most users most of the time as long as you have a reasonable backup strategy the ECC might wind up being an unnecessary point of inflexibility, particularly since it takes pretty much every viable home server Intel part off the table.

I'm finally at a point where technology has miniaturized hardware that was previously impressive to me. 8c/16t doesn't FULLY replace my 2x 10c/20t system... but when you consider general performance per thread and overall power efficiency... Damnit. Homelab is expensive y'all. At least my loved ones appreciate the Plex I'm paying more than a Netflix (ad supported) would cost per month in electricity... Hell, one day I might run something from this decade 😆

Wendell - I bought a framework16 and even filmed it. But the iGPU has some issue with encoding (and decoding for others as well - personally I don't have it). The topic on AMD forum has been covered for over a year and there is still no fix. Could you lean on AMD to do something? It's possible that it isn't 100% their fault, but it does look like it partially at the very least is. Sorry that I cannot link the thread. I'm already afraid that my comment will be nuked.

With all of the niche esoteric adaptors floating around these days it's kind of surprising that no-one has bothered to make a USB HBA that exposes all of the SMART stuff to the host (since that's the main reason USB mass storage isn't great for a NAS).
@MikrySoft5 күн бұрын
@@bosstowndynamics5488 What I would really want is a HBA over Thunderbolt/USB4/OCuLink using their PCIe in disguise capabilities
@bosstowndynamics54885 күн бұрын
@MikrySoft We can already do that pretty easily though with a cheap used Thunderbolt enclosure and a standard PCIe HBA. It's a bit clunky but perfectly serviceable. The benefit of a pure USB HBA would be allowing extra storage in systems where their PCIe and on board SATA connectivity is already fully utilised and making small form factor systems which may either not have Thunderbolt or already be using it for other things more stable and reliable as NAS devices

I have purchased two of these Mini's. The UM790 and the 890. The 890 as gone BSOD in the first month but the 790 is still going strong after 2 months. I will not buy any of these again because of support. They put up barebones support sites with no graphics, just a list of files and they are never updated. I am done with Chinese. It's all Korean machines from now on.

Lame. Just get a laptop since you have the installed webcam. Try a HacksteamtOSh distro if it exists. If you insist on a mini PC, wait for Strix Halo to get the graphics performance of a 4060 or some shit. You might be able to install an 8TB PCIe 5.0 drive and/or drive a 4K240 32" monitor at that point.
