I'd be really interested in the performance gap to the other AsRock card: The 7900 xtx Phantom Gaming. It is also oc compared to the reference model, but cheaper than the Taichi.

@spencercrump9241

I believe the phantom has 2x8 pins instead of the 3x8 that the Taichi has which will drop the performance. The Taichi can use 500W with an increased PL under load. Each PCIe PSU cable can support 175W each which is 350W which is a pretty big difference in power consumption which can affect performance. How much performance depends on how efficient RDNA3 chips at handling the extra power.
@diebanane4239
@diebanane4239 Жыл бұрын
@@spencercrump9241 seems like the other answer i wrote got deleted because of the link, but according to asrock on their own website, the phantom gaming also has 3x8 power. It is definitely the card I have planned to use currently, but im really sceptical of the low "thickness" (57mm) compared to other cards. A decent OC but not that large of the cooler should lead to pretty "high" (maybe mid-80s) temps combined with this power intake

I got a 6950XT Red Devil shortly after the 4090 release. When I saw the price / performance ratio on the new nvidia cards I was fairly certain that AMD would not have a lot of room to move up or down either ... and that turned out to be true. I'm gonna stick with this card for a while, best scenario this whole system (5800X3D, 32GB 3200 CL14, X470 Taichi Ultimate) stays just the way it is and in a few years I'll build my first RT machine.

While I also thought along this line, I tested a 6900XT for 700 EUR for a week. But I did return it as it wasn't worth the price in my eyes for my use cases, the newer cards offer even worse value. So unless a company offers some noticeable improvements in that metric and which I care about the most, I will skip this generation alltogether. And Nvidia doesn't seem to care about value at all, so Navi 32/33 are the only chips worth a look later this year.

Can always trust Wendell to give a fair honest review ….. even with AsRock products. I feel AsRock has copped some fair criticism of the years for some substandard products, but as of late (current Gen mobo / GPUs) we’ve seen a massive increase in QC and general quality of products by outlets who’ve generally shunned them on independent reviews. AsRock keep going in this direction 💪🥰👍😇

@Altrop
@Altrop Жыл бұрын
Yeah there's a serious difference between the premium models with three 8-pin connectors and better cooling vs the models with two 8-pin connectors, lower power limit and lesser coolers. Even 7900XT cards are power limited by the 2-pin models! I bought the 7900XT 20GB Taichi, it has the exact same cooler as the Taichi XTX (awesome, overkill!) and even when overclocked to the brim drawing 400-405w it's obvious the card has more OC headroom but the power cap is the limiting factor. I got it stable at 1010Mv to squeeze the most out of it, since the only way to get higher clocks when you hit the hard power limit is by reducing the voltage. 1010mv is a great result compared to other models. The trick is to leave only a 100Mzh gap between min and max clocks, there's a long story behind this but it improves stability at lower voltages. With this overclock I outperform a stock 7900XTX. Above 400w the scaling of a 7900XT is bad though so it makes some sense. But for benchmarking, I wish I could have 50 watts more. :D

Totally unwarranted imo, at least when it comes to their premium products. I've owned a 6800XT Tai Chi and a 7900XT 20GB Tai Chi now and both are amazing cards and overclocking beasts. The 7900XT Tai chi even comes with the exact same cooler as the XTX version which is total overkill (70c hotspot temps @ 400w overclock and only 50% fan speed), three power connectors and you can tell the power limit (400 watts) is the limiting factor in overclocking. If it could go 50 watts higher you'd be able to squeeze more out of it. But above 400w the 7900XT doesn't scale well so I kinda get it. *On top of that they are much cheaper than premium cards of other brands, and in some cases better. The Tai Chi cards are much cheaper and have better VRMs than for example Red Devils, and are on par with the Sapphire Nitro+ Vapor-X.* Idk about their motherboards but I can definitely recommend the Tai Chi GPUs. And in Europe they're actually only a tiny bit more expensive than the cheapest basic models, really good value. My 7900XT Tai Chi was only 30 euro more expensive than the cheapest basic reference design, total no-brainer.

My Taichi 7900XT is stupid powerful (also 3x8 pin). Undervolted it, upped my mhz cap to 3150, power limit to +15, and I gained almost 20+ fps in Warzone/CoD, while staying in 50s, low 60s temp wise. Card was boosting to around 3050 mhz and was stable. However, AC Valhalla did not like going much over 2800 mhz so I capped it at 2850 and its purring like a new born kitten. Temps lower than stock, performance much better than stock, and card is relatively quiet. I have fan curve to max at 85% max and it doesn't go much over 75% while keeping this performance and temps. Amazing card. Cannot recommend enough. Added bonus, it's the best looking card of the 7900 series imo :)

Big Plus for the NOT Reference Design triple Power Header instead the Reference double Header, which is on the edge (without ANY headroom). But i am missing the most important information the efficiency under partial load. i have the impression that the AMDs under full load are using less power, but if delivering the same performance (e.g. Framecapped) at a load between 30% and 80% the nvidias are much more efficient (e.g. in my favourite game you are hunting not for the high but for the stable FPS and for high 1% Low and for mostly stable0,1% Low, depending on what part of the Map (2012-2023) the complexity is very different an therefore the demand to the GPU so a simple limitatation of load is misleading on the old parts of the map i have 70 to 90 Watt inthe newest parts im GPU bottlenecked at 280W, ofcourse a 7900 XTX at the top would deliver more performance at 330W but what would it deliver where my old 1080ti is enough with 70Wm would it than be very inefficient at 200+W or would it also be very efficient and only sipp below 50W. i always miss the information in the reviews about mediocre load. you do drive your car in the very rare moments at full load, you do not drive above 200 mph on the freeway but mostly limited between 55 an 80mph depending on the state.

He found some very interesting data on having a 3080ti starting point and "upgrading" to one of the previously mentioned cards but on different CPUs. So far he's the only one I've seen that's done that and it seems incredibly significant. There seems to be significant gains by going with the latest AMD GPUs with recent AMD CPUs. Making it much more cost effective to achieve nearly the same performance if not more with an AMD on AMD platform vs AMD on Nvidia. Performance is probably the primary concern. But a review that ignores temperature and noise isn't worth much. These lesser factors can make the difference. The Sapphire Nitro, for example, is both faster and cooler than the reference model. That helps justify its expense. Having these details for the Asrock would help some of us determine whether the added cost was worth it.

I went through two reference designs with HOT SPOT temps issues, both had the vapor chamber issue; I decided to try a second one to see if I would get one with a good vapor chamber but no.. Since there were not AIB models available in the part of the world I am in, I decided to buy a Nvidia and went for the TUF RTX 4080 from Asus that was available at MSRP (I am sure that must be a mistake because the OC version was 300$ more. I didn't go for the RTX 4090 because that meant paying an extra 500-600$ just o get 22 to 25% more performance which wasn't worth it. But I am with you, huge disappointment with AMD's GPU. AMD is doing very well with their CPUs but their GPUs have been a huge disappointment to me. I hope this changes and AMD pull their act together; in the short time I have been back with AMD, I discovered EYEFinity and it is just amazing, it is great. To be able to select which game you want with it and it configures my 3 monitors alone and when I close the game it goes back to normal, it is a MUCH BETTER experience compared to Nvidia Surround.. Nvidia Surround really sucks, and on top of that sometimes it crashes trying to configure my monitor..

I'm curious because I have an all-black and blue LED for my rig that I deeply like, and I find it difficult to find a replacement for my Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro+ that would integrate as nicely (I'm quite sad Sapphire, my decade+ old supplier of great graphic cards, went for either metal or grey with hard red for their newest cards) Before being crucified by you guys on being concerned by looks, my PC will be the centerpiece of my room, a love letter to my passion and hobby, so I'd like it for my guests to have that little "wow" when they see it.

Love your work! Will you please do an in-depth review on the ProArt Z790-CREATOR WIFI board for professionals? Is it stable with 128 Gigs of RAM as the 13900k has stability issues at 128 Gigs of RAM; does this board's new ram control tech solve this issue? Many serious VFX professionals and motion designers need 128 GIGs of ram, especially for After Effects. Example: Can we get stability on 128 gigs of ram if we lower the speed and turn off some of the silly over clock marketing ram features that make 0.0000001% speed difference in real world professional usage? Thank you! YOU SIR, ROCK!

Just got one of these yesterday. I do have a bit of coil whine particularly in Doom Eternal at 1440p since the game hits high framerates even at max settings with RT on with this card. I'm wondering if its my new Corsair HX1000i that is causing it. The reference 7900 XTX I had before refunding due to the hotspot issue also had nasty coil whine. Overall the performance and temps on the Asrock card are great!

I'm not sure if most of the 7900xtx's typically have more headroom or what but I got significantly more performance from undervolting. Going from stock 1150 (max) Mv to 980 I went from 2850mhz to 3050 and temps went down along with tdp. Fps definitely increased in games along with performance benchmark scores. I still don't really entirely understand how undervolting it manages to increase the clock, stability, and performance but I'm not complaining. My idle draw is still really high thought and sits at 100w no matter what I do, that's a tad high. I'd be okay with 50. I have an Xfx black edition for what it's worth.

ASUS cards are always defective garbage. EVGA was the go to brand for many people. I wish this card was out when I built my rig, but it doesn't seem that it got any waterblock support yet. I did consider buying a 7900 XTX, and if the performance had been what AMD claimed it would be, I may have gotten one. This looks like a good card, but there's no way I'd pay $1200 for it. At that price, you might as well put up a bit more and just get the 4090, which is what I did end up doing. But even still, I'd get the 4080 over this card at $1200. I'd probably go for this card if it were under $1000 though.
@andyblakely7013
@andyblakely7013 Жыл бұрын
I considered the jump from 7900 XTX to 4090, but when you barely wanted to pay $1K for a GPU, paying $1,199 is forgivable by the spouse while $1,699 is like 700 more than the goal, and... I just couldn't bring myself to do it. (I used today's pricing on Newegg of this Taichi card verses the cheapest 4090 in stock sold direct from Newegg)
@nunyobiznez875
@nunyobiznez875 Жыл бұрын
@@andyblakely7013 The cost of a 4090 is a difficult pill to swallow. But I still think the Taichi at $1200, would be even more difficult, at least for me, when a 4080 can be had at the same price and the reference 7900 XTX is only around $1000. But to each their own. Right now, it really feels like trying to find the GPU deal that sucks the least.
@andyblakely7013
@andyblakely7013 Жыл бұрын
@@nunyobiznez875 I definitely wouldn't pay a $200 premium for the Taichi if it was the same as the baseline reference model. The much better cooling system and additional power connector, dual BIOS, etc give me peace of mind worth paying more than the base model. Especially in light of the reference design vapor chamber defects. I'm not a 4K gamer and have no intention of upgrading to 4K since I've got a great gaming ultrawide at 3440x1440 (4,953,600 pixels vs 7,516,800 at 4K). If I was a 4K gamer I would lean heavier to saving up for a 4090. If I was rich and didn't care about price:performance I'd choose the ridiculously priced 4090. But in most cases the 4080 is a bit of a step down compared to the 7900 XTX, yet on average costs a couple hundred more. It has less VRAM, less memory bandwidth, and drivers without as much potential to improve today's scores. Even with an early driver base the XTX is squarely positioned between the 4080 and 4090 in rasterization power. One of the last driver updates dropped my jaw at how much 1% lows were improved; I'd never seen anything like it before. The card is a diamond in the rough and being refined in significant ways pretty quickly. I find myself in an interesting mind-state regarding Nvidia vs AMD. I'm a longtime fan of both companies, but a steady GeForce GPU user for almost 2 decades. I'm a huge fan of Nvidia's products and the industry's support for them. But at the same time I've come to despise the company itself in the last couple of generations. I like AMD as a company significantly better. They're the obvious underdog striving to match or beat their competitor in a higher weight class - Intel with CPUs, Nvidia with GPUs. There comes a point where the scores are close enough that you really want to support the underdog and simultaneously save a boatload of money. If you take away raytracing, the 7900 XTX is close enough to the 4090 that a $700 price difference between reference designs (and moreso the street prices) makes AMD the price:performance winner. Same with the 4080, but to a much lesser extent. Honestly AMD was hugely outselling the 4080 until the vapor chamber defect and lack of supply fueled a lot of movement to Nvidia. The product, minus the defect, was proving to be a clear win for them in actual sales metrics.

"So you've resigned yourself to buy a $1000-ish graphics card..." Even though gaming is (was?) my primary entertainment, I'm sitting in my lab with two EPYC (Rome) servers, and I'm installing Optane drives into my SAN (Not a NAS. A SAN), I would never even CONSIDER spending $1000 on a GPU. Even when I was heavily into Machine Learning and had a server with 4x GPUs I would never have considered a $1000 GPU. (Gave the GPUs as Christmas presents in 2021 when they were unobtanium, and people were trying to build systems with ANY GPU.) We need NEW capable and affordable GPUs. $150 / $250 / $350 4-digit price tags for personal computer hardware is nonsense, not "normal".
