I love the ship designs. Not because I'm a fan of rectangles, but because I'm a fan of realism. Engineering efficiencies in conjunction with performance will almost certainly dictate the design of our spacefaring ships in the future.. and given that there is no atmospheric drag in space, and how efficiently we produce large rectangles in just about any material... I believe that the vast majority of the ships flying around out there are going to look strikingly similar to what you've designed.

Right angles produce stress points in the structure. If it has internal pressure, it should probably be spherical or cylindrical. If it doesn't, it should probably be just the thinnest lightest metal superstructure it can possibly be. The Venture Star from Avatar is actually a pretty realistic conception of how long distance space travel would look. An absolute minimal, skeletal superstructure, huge spherical tanks for storing liquids and gasses, and absolutely massive radiators to remove excess heat. My only criticism of the Venture Star is that it doesn't have a radiation shield separating the drive section from the rest of the ship. A realistic ship would be made to accelerate constantly in one direction for an incredibly long time with effectively no maneuvering, so we don't really want realistic ships for a space game that's supposed to be fun to play.

Tried to throw money at my screen. This looks exactly the type of game I would love to play. Star Citizen is too complex for old me. Starsector, Star valor, Starcom and Everspace 2 are just fine. Looking forward to this.

Please please introduce small details to the visual art. Especially inside the space stations, it's hard to infer the scale. There's a complete lack of small, human sized detail in most places. The floor of the station looks like corrugated metal that belongs in a hallway, yet each corrugation is probably ten meters across (which makes no sense for this scale). It would be cool if there were any greeble smaller than 5m across.

Hoping for some more variety in teh spaceship design. Everything seems like rectangles from the ones we've seen so far. Hoping for more customization and unique designs than just... rectangles where the objective is to pick up more rectangular shipping containers.

Yeah those are coming. Already have many sketches for different ships. From a production standpoint it makes sense to explore similarly stylized ships at the same time since they share assets and design similarities. Still working on this line for a little and before changing lanes

I think that an objective like "go to location x" is always problematic, because the player can leave the area again and then they are stuck because the game no longer tells them where to go, many games have this issue. Instead, the location could be attached to the "deliver x to location y" which more accurately matches what objective the player is supposed to complete. It could also become confusing if you have a mission to deliver to two locations, then you would need two "go to location x" instructions which would be confusing.

I agree we are just testing the mechanics right now. A simple delivery mission won't have this many sub objectives. But we will need these tools for more complex mission types.

Always interesting! How much has your work shifted from hands on development to project management? How would you judge the possibilities with the extended team compared to if you had not extended the team and just stayed with 2 people? Is it mainly time or rather skill that was gained? Not sure if this would be a feasible topic for another episode

Great question. I'm probably 60/40 project management/hands on dev now. By necessity of course I prefer to be hands on as much as possible. The skills that the extended team have brought on are invaluable and are pushing the quality to levels I didn't think we would achieve. So there is no doubt the scope and fidelity would be less without the bigger team. I can't draw as well as our concept artists nor do I have the extensive material knowledge of our tech artists, so it's not a time factor in that department.

Yep we run it on the steamdeck which is kind of our low-end benchmark. Ideally 60fps on steamdeck.

I agree that multiplayer would be amazing. Realistically it increases the scope of the game massively so at least for our 1.0 vision multiplayer isn't an element but it's not totally off the drawing board.
