camos where used in WW II for 2 reasons ... the radar was not invented at the beginning of the war, and (in the passific war) the japanese painted their ships green to blend them with islands, so even if they where detected, it looked like a tradar malfunction (detecting a village ore base, not a ship). this actually costed the US some cruisers, that were lured in ambushes, even though they had radar.

SHIP CAMO INFO the ship camo pattern was made in a time were you just had optical detection by humans. they had to guess on how large the ship is based on details like doors and gun types of the ship in order to find the right shooting distance for the main battery. these camo patterns made it harder to see in which exact direction the ship is traveling and how big the single parts of the super structer are. these camo pattern become useless when in world war 2 radar based aiming systems were invented

dazzle camo worked. It wasn't meant to conceal the ship, it was meant to make it difficult to distinguish the direction the ship was headed in. You can't conceal a ship in the horizon, it literally stands out, but you can make it difficult for the enemy to calculate an attack on the ship effectively.
@nolanshuey25128 жыл бұрын
The dazzle painting of the Battleships as transports during World War 1 were very affective. U-boat service men would become confused in the direction in which the ship was moving.

I am so aggravated at the idiots who say "Oh, but bolt action rifles." Seriously it's a battlefield game! Do you think dice would have knowingly made a game with only 5 maybe 10 weapons? Sure it's grounded in reality, unlike CoD, but it will never become Arma, or in this case, Verdun.

Also it no longer being in use for that size of ship is more due to better sighting technologies. Radar to begin with and many other optics that are run by computers, which also give the benefit of shooting over the horizon. We still use camouflage for river boats at least.
@hairychris4448 жыл бұрын
Yep, and most dazzle patterns had false "bows" painted on to confuse U-boat targetting. This would cause a torpedo to pass behind the ship. Also true about targetting technologies. Dazzle works with visual only. Radar, sonar, magnetic, audio etc are not affected by paintwork. Going for dull grey may minimise visual spotting, dazzle was only really for confusing visual submarine targetting which is no longer used.

Sprint animation delay is back (or should I say was never removed, seems like a strange feature to put back into the game so one could assume development of bf1 began as early as late 2013 during BF4's release window), people complained about it in BF4 claiming it took too long to begin sprinting so they removed it. Keyword: *animation*, it doesn't actually affect the player's speed in any way, it just adds a visual weighted feel to the player's movements.

No iron sight battle rifles? Those were the guns that most soldiers used back in WW1. They have too much firearm diversity in my opinion which is "neat" but I think finding some other ways to incorporate them would be better since it just silly seeing 60% of the fighting force sporting marksmanship rifles, and crew served machine guns. The game looks like BF4 with a WW1 skin on it. Just seems odd to have so many automatic weapons being utilized in a war where most soldiers had a bolt action rifle. Really like the bayonet charges though.

ships were painted like that in world war 1 to distract submarines/U-Boats, as it was much harder for somebody to distinctly tell apart what they were looking at (and what part of a ship they were looking at) through a periscope when looking at a camouflage like that compared to the sea. it was done like that as someone proposed to the navy during world war 1 that you cannot camouflage a ship at sea as there is nothing else there apart from the sea so even a ship with camo on it would stick out like a sore thumb. because of this the navy decided to focus more on distracting the enemy and making it harder for the enemy to pin point parts of the ship. (sorry for the long post :). )

Dazzle camouflage was quite effective. Due to the fact that ships always skyline themselves on the horizon, it was basically impossible to prevent them from being spotted. Dazzle camouflage distorted the outline of the ship, making it hard for enemies to identify what they were looking at. You can find some pics of it from and distance and it does a pretty good job.

This will FORCE players to make compromises and choose the right weapon for the right situation which is great from a gameplay standpoint because it adds depth. It aint casual and that's a good thing. Also like the idea of machine guns being meant for suppression SUPPORT and the attention to bolt actions on scout for us more historically minded people.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE SHIP CAMO A quick google search will tell you that it was not ineffective (for it's time). It was used to hinder the enemy when it comes to detecting how many knots the ship was going, since you had to manually calculate the speed and bearing, which makes it way harder to judge where to fire your ships artillery. You have to remember that everything for the most part was manual, there were no laser guided rockets. Judging where to fire your main armament involved tons of math and calculations. Also, it helped camouflage the ships while docked in port. It also was hard to tell which was the bow/stern of the ship, which forces the observer to try to use the wake of the ship as judgement, which was a lot harder. Sure, they're pretty obsolete now, but at the time, they served their warships well.

@williamkent24468 жыл бұрын
I don't think they will. They have taken their healing capabilities away which will hopefully make the player think more tactically. Also, they are forcing the assault class to close the distance and actually assault, which I appreciate. No more will we have snipers, assault, supports, and engineers all fighting within 15 meters of each other (Operation Locker) causing a giant clusterbomb. For any given capture point, people will find Assault is best inside the capture point, Medics and Support circling around the perimeter, and Scout providing longer range support. Ideally, the classes in bf1 are much more defined and will encourage the player to play their respective positions on the battlefield...which I am a HUGE fan of. It is one giant step towards encouraging teamwork and playing the objective.

The flashy camo on the Warships was incredibly effective at the time, During this time, weapons on warships had no form or targeting computers, nor did they have advanced enough Sonar to create movement projections for targets. It was fantastic at forcing manually fired torpedoes from periscopes miss by enormous distances as the firers couldnt tell the facing, oreientation and speed with direstion of enemy ships, due to the angular design and the way the light interacts as it travels atop the surface of the waters reflective surface. Some seriously fascinating stuff

I don't know where I read it, but as I remember the purpose of the Dreadnought stripe camo was to confuse U Boat periscope operators as to the direction that the ship was travelling in and also at what range it was. Unlike we're lead to believe, periscopes of the day weren't crystal clear at all times and weather and waves could obscure the view, so getting quick confusing glimpses could cause confusion.

ah ok refreshing my knowledge with Wikipedia: [W]ith the weapon beginning to be generally issued to the British Army's infantry battalions on the Western Front in early 1916 as a replacement for the heavier and less mobile Vickers machine gun, the Vickers then being withdrawn from the infantry for use by specialist machine-gun companies.

The razzledazzle thingy works against submarines without laser guided torpedos because the lines get mixed with the sealevel making it harder to decide what your aiming at especially when looking through a messy telescope

The camo on ships wasn't for distraction; the pattern broke up the shape and lines of the craft when viewed over long distances.
@Moholeoel8 жыл бұрын
It also made it difficult for the enemy to predict direction and distance when aiming torpedoes, etc.
@Looser4kHD8 жыл бұрын
they used this type of camoflage since at longer distances (where enemy ships usually were) the ships trajectory was really hard to figure out and that resulted in miscalculations when shooting torpedos.
@anonymus88768 жыл бұрын
The dazzle patterns were meant to make it harder to zero in on a ship. Not just to look fabulous.
@ponycentaur14568 жыл бұрын
1:20 they had all sorts of water camo. The stripes were MAINLY to confuse aiming systems on which way the ship was heading or turning. THey were effective agaisnt subs, BUT were no longer used due to the visibility by aircraft when they became more and more used in combat. Look up PINK cammo on ships, and even ww2 jeeps .
@iflexx1238 жыл бұрын
Dazzle camouflage was used to confuse the enemy. When you look at the black and white patterns from afar it becomes nearly impossible to tell the distance. The pattern makes it difficult to tell the exact shape of the ship as far as calling out different parts.
@ray4lsd8 жыл бұрын
The dazzle camo for ships was not created to hide ships. That is almost impossible anyways as they will allways stick out, or depending if they used coal or oil had a huge exhaust cloud giving the position away anyways. The thing is, you still have to manualy range in your weapons or you want to know what type of enemy ship it is just by using visual methods, like optics etc. And here is where the dazzle shemes shine. With advancements in rangefinding like radar the camo became obsolete.
@kerbalairforce88028 жыл бұрын
Dazzle camo makes it hard to tell if a ship is moving towards or away from you. It also disguises the shape and size of a ship, making it hard to tell what kind of boat it is. It isn't used anymore because Navy engagements tend to happen with guided weapons over the horizon.
@wb88648 жыл бұрын
Dazzle Camo was actually extremely effective. It's purpose was not really to mask the ship from eyesight, but to disrupt the outline thus making it difficult to calculate how fast it was actually going.
@Radintoriov8 жыл бұрын
Radar trumped the use of Dazzle Camo, but back in WW1 when you had to visually gauge direction, angle and range with very little mechanization every little bit helped with impacting enemy artillery fire.
@stephenmarshall37718 жыл бұрын
level, the dazzle camouflage on warships is actually meant to distort depth perception of the gunners on an enemy warship, in theory this was thought to decrease the accuracy of the enemy ship firing back at you
@warthog20228 жыл бұрын
The dazzle paint job was stopped once radar was fully introduced. The dazzle paint was pretty effective at messing up long range shooting of the plotters.
@dmcc51108 жыл бұрын
The dazzle camouflage worked, it was too primarily stop submarines and mess up where they'd fire torpedoes not hide the ship, as it becomes hard to identity individual ship parts. It became obsolete after sonar e.t.c

Dazzle camouflage was used on warships and mostly supply ships to throw off submarine attack. It was pretty effective
@squirreleater8 жыл бұрын
dazzle paint was not camouflage. it was meant to keep the enemy guessing about what type of ship you where, and made it very difficult to determine the size of a ship when seen by itself
@grrr1112221118 жыл бұрын
The objective of Dazzle camouflage was to present a confusing profile of a ship in order the obfuscate your heading and speed, something that you need to know very well considering the ranges that naval guns can reach out to. The advent of radar, as opposed to visual, targeting system renders this type of camouflage obsolete.
@davidcbird8 жыл бұрын
The Navy camo was used to distract you eyes and make it much more difficult to Identify and target the weapons and other key areas. as you may see in levelcap's provided photo it can be quite effective, only increasing at range.
@Aesthetic-Hollow8 жыл бұрын
the dazzle camo for the ships wasent used for distraction too much, it was ment to confuse the direction it was going so the enemy knew not to or to shoot them down because it could be going to war depending on the direction.

At 1:53 I was already rolling my eyes at the idea of red dots sights being in a ww1 game, until I realized it was just the spotter circle perfectly aligned with the iron sights.
@sweast83028 жыл бұрын
The painting on the ship is called "Dazzle Camoflage" the stripes and the angles make it hard for the enemy to see what kind of ship and what guns it was by hiding it's true angles.
@Haulvarn8 жыл бұрын
The camouflage on the warships was supposed to confuse the eye. THe idea wasn't to hide the ships, but to make it harder for a spotter to identify the type of ship, since it was a lot harder to distinguish its features. When ships with the same camouflage pattern would drive close together multiple ships might even appear as one to the human eye. Also, as mentioned in another comment, it made it harder to estimate distance, speed and course of the ship. This worked very well until the late years of WWII when naval ships were equipped with fairly modern radar systems (for the time) Sincerely, a german navy NCO

Dazzle camouflage was extremely effective if it was done right. It was not to "distract" the enemy, but to throw off fire control solutions by making it seem like the ship was, say, moving slightly away rather than slightly toward the observer. It worked particularly well against coincidence rangefinders. Not all dazzle camouflage worked as intended, and the stuff that worked was limited to specific engagement ranges: tiny lines like the ones shown there were better at close ranges, while thick lines were better at long ranges. At long range, thin lines would blend together and it would lose its dazzling effect. Same with thick lines at close range: they would be too large to fool the observer. There were lots of other little tricks, like painting false bow waves in order to give the impression that the ship was moving faster than it was, or to paint a false bow in an effort to make the ship appear shorter. All of this was done to throw off enemy fire control. The reason dazzle camouflage has fallen out of favour in modern navies is because range-finding is no longer done by the Mk. 1 Eyeball with some optical assistance. It is done with radar and other such things. However, modern dazzle camouflage, particularly on small patrols vessels and the like, does still exist.

The Dazzle camouflage was used to break up the outline of the ships stern and bow. The idea was to make it hard for enemy Uboats to know the ships heading, making it harder to torpedo.
@KipperStudios8 жыл бұрын
On the topic of camouflage for ships - it was HIGHLY effective at its job. But what was its job? No, it wasn't to make boats invisible. It was to protect them from torpedo attacks, as its a lot harder to target a ship with zebra camo than it is a plain grey ship, especially with water & sun glint all over the place. Sounds silly, but it worked.
@anthonyramos1698 жыл бұрын
Level, the reason they painted stripes was to disorient the enemy ship's, when both the boats rocked back and forth combined with the zig zag's your enemy couldn't tell if you were moving, got nauses and would make it really hard for the enemy war ship to fire upon you. Also keep up the good work, I love your video's!

the razzle dazzle camouflage was meant to make it very hard to judge the distance, speed, and direction in which the ships were going. Yes it did actually work.

I really like that when you shoot some guns the gun itself actually tips up a bit in your hands, I do t really like when in bf4 when using anything other than pistols it would just make your screen tilt up and not the gun itself
@SoccerChris68 жыл бұрын
The ship skins were originally made submarines couldn't see what way the boat was moving. This made it so they couldn't aim where the boat is going, but when sonar was popularized they could use the sonar to track the ship.
@dense_and_dull8 жыл бұрын
They didn't use dazzle camouflage to distract the enemy. They used it to confuse U-Boat captains. It was effective in masking the direction and speed of the ship. It is no longer used because we use other methods to mask our ships from Sonar and Radar and not periscopes.
@bliesberg8 жыл бұрын
Dazzle camouflage wasn't designed to hide the ship, it was designed to make it hard to determine the shape and direction of the ship. It worked well enough to use it past WW2.

Levelcap the reason they used dazzle camouflage back then is because only navel guns from battleships was how ships fought each other. So since its impossible to hide a battle ship on the open ocean. The only other way to prevent people from hitting you is by confusing them by preventing them from guessing your speed, direction and range. Hence dazzle camouflage was effective. Today we have cruise missiles, radar that can see pass the horizon and navel gunfire is not as prevalent because of aircraft carriers are the dominant force also nukes are more effective than having a bigger gun.
@calipto46058 жыл бұрын
The reason the ships were painted like that is so that it is hard to pinpoint certain areas of the ship, see what way it is facing, and generally cause confusion. Pretty interesting optical illusions if you ask me.

The mechanic of machine guns getting a tighter grouping isnt just a mechanic, its how they work. The weight of machine guns counter acts the recoil, making the machine gun become more controllable the longer its firing
@Alpha23078 жыл бұрын
The battleship camouflage was not to distract the enemy, it was to make it harder to tell how far away it was and the speed of the ships movement. We no longer use this because it has no effect against guided missiles, laser targeting or aircraft.

The Dazzle Camouflage was not meant to distract the enemy, but rather to not allow U-boats to effectively set the range on torpedoes. Hence why the shapes move in and out of each other.

tbh whenever i watch bf1 gameplay i keep getting the feeling that the players are playing Abstergo Entertainment games where they emerge into history as world war 1 soldiers, which explains the female announcing voice, the overlook of the map & the zoom-ins when you spawn, plus the gun skins and behemoth stuffs
@Skenderbeuismyhero8 жыл бұрын
It wasn't meant to distract the enemy. It just broke up the outline of the ship so an enemy would have a hard time telling what type of ship you were. This made it harder to gauge the ships range and hit it.

I must say that the way your character holds the pistol looks a lot more dynamic than in previous bf games. Might be the fact that he doesn't hold it that close to his face or that he moves it a lot around the screen, making it look more mobile which a sidearm is.

dazzle ships were super effective. it threw off the enemy's depth perception of an enemy vessel, making it near impossible to hit with a torpedo

The different classes having different effective ranges is going to make playing the objective harder. If your machine gun works better at middle ranges, you're going to be outside the capping circle for flags and missing out on a lot of points.
