there's actually an AR-15 platform upper called the TAC ordnance crossbow that can turn an M16 or something similar into a crossbow, and it looks pretty similar to the XBOW. If you had to make any sort of crossbow, i'd choose to make one where most of the stock as well as the grip had already been built for me. just a thought.

The barrel is still on the bow for mounting the bow. The upper rail had a large gap sawn into it so you could place a bolt into it. You would want so sand it or smooth it out as much as you could so it wouldn't cut your cable eventually. The job would only take about 4 or 5 hours if you had to scavenge the pieces.

Nice video. Referring to your comment on the Xbow design, im not sure what this Xbow was based off, but something to note is that certain modern crossbows are designed to fit onto the lower receivers of certain rifles. Maybe that was what Dice had in mind when designing it.

I was using the Scan Bolt effectively last night with the Support class. It's a really useful tool for that class since you have infinite ammo, effectively giving you infinite ability to recon buildings and corners, letting you know where there are guys you can spray down with the MG. I don't find that it's worth replacing the Medpack for, though.

In the game the soldiers are not wearing the type of body armor you mentioned, I base this argument on the fact that you can stab through it with the knife. Also the mass of the bolt is greater than that of a round which gives it increased momentum. Combine that with a bladed tip which will penetrate a Kevlar weave as opposed to flattening on impact.

Quick tip; to solve the having to reload the bolts when you spawn problem, you can select your Xbow, change to a different weapon and switch back quickly, you won't have to go through the animation. Don't know If its a bug but hope it helps.

The scan bolt will also show you enemy equipment like spawn beacons, motion sensors, and MAV. Its good for the "Fire in the hole" assignment.

Most useful setup I've ran with the xbow is the scoped/balanced and a pdw for recon, so you can still play your sniping role, while still being able to hold your own in cq.

The explosive bolt is actually very affective at close range on infantry. It's a one shot kill if u hit a target and since there virtually no splash damage u can stand right next to them and take barely any to no damage. It's a good tactic

Cus a bullet has a smaller size that is more easily collapsed when hitting a surface and a bolt is a long pipe that is less likely to collapse under pressure, it might bend but the tip is less likely to collapse and even then you still have the rest of the bolts momentum following up to impact the target.

Lvlcap, its not a battle fashioned weapon it is based off a real crossbow called the Tac15 that fits on the lower receiver of an Ar-15. It also has a standalone model. I am not sure of its military use but I do know navy seal teams have trained with crossbows in the past.

Just fyi: You don't actually have to watch the reloading animation everytime you respawn with non-standard bolts equipped. You can just switch to the xbow and instantly switch back to anything you like, the bolt will be loaded once you take the xbow out again.

My go-to set up: Recon: SKS w/ Kobra, Foregrip, & Laser, Magnum, & Xbow. With the Xbow the recon class is a lot more useful. In situations where is was using recon but ran into a vehicle, the HE bolts really helps. Plus I was really helping my team by scanning areas while we pushed up in rush.

You can actually shoot multiple bolts, but the time enemies are spotted is pretty short so it's more for knowing if someone's around the corners etc.

Oh... i love this Weapon... It's so awesome... As a recon you can use the HE bolt to have at least something against vehicles... and as a Supp you can use the scoped xbow with balanced bolt to have atleast something to defend against snipers... It really adds some great balancing aspects to the 2 weaker classes (supp + recon)

Just remember that disabling/destroying a tank is a trophy/achievement. It's going to take so many shots so I recommend waiting until someone either puts C4 on a tank or until it's already on fire for a second or two.

If I'm not mistaken they did model it after a real cross-bow. There is a cross-bow that uses an ar15 lower as it's stock and trigger assembly.

According to a post in the Battlefield Blog, it is described as a jury-rigged weapon made from a malfunctioning M417 rifle, wire from a broken down car, scrap metal for the bow, and a optical sight like the Red Dot Sight or PKS-07 as shown in the trailer and preview screenshots..

There's a HUGE difference in the material in stab-proof and bulletproof vest. For one stab-proofs are one solid layer of metal while body armor is almost exclusively layered.

He wasn't talking about force, he's talking about width. The crossbow is bigger so at closer ranges when velocity isn't a problem it will do more damage because it has greater size than a bullet. But a t farther ranges the bullet will out preform the bolt because it has more speed/force/velocity.

It provides extra options for all classes. Anti vehicle, recon, range. I personally used it in my engineer class to provide me with a ranged weapon and something to spot ppl with so I could remain hidden. Its a hunters choice in the battlefield

Regarding the way it looks have you not seen the crossbow that replaces the barrel of most AR platforms, im fairly sure that's what they based the concept on. It uses the AR trigger and safety.

An other way I like to use the Xbow is as an assault in rush, using the explosive bolts to take down any wall that stands on my, yet still being able to revive allies and having a better weapon than I would get as engineer

Actually the arms are a pair of a car engine braces commonly used in cheap foreign cars and the cable is probably made from a downed power line. The bolts would be easy. Just find some metal bars used for store or market shelves. I built the bow part and all I need now is an AR lower. The trigger mechanism would work on a cable.

It's actually a TOTAL of 150m headshots for all the weapons necessary to unlocking the scoped xbow. You could just hop on into a CQ game and rack up headshots and unlock it within a few games or so.

Personally I think support benefits most from the crossbow. All the other classes have more useful gadgets that I'm not willing to give up but support only has to give up lolclaymores, lolmortars, and C4. In exchange you get your own sniper rifle more or less, the ability to spot anyone in buildings instantly from afar. The ability to silently kill people without silencing your gun, and a panic one hit kill weapon that can serve as a one shot shotgun at close range if you have an LMG equipped

Balanced bolt should be used with the scoped version. Very little drop over range compared to other bolts making it a very effective "sniper" option when running with CQ setups on Assault / Engineer / Support. This is what I am doing now, and the tradeoff is well worth it.

I used the xbow on TDM and got 25 kills with it in a game, along with 29 spas-12 kills. I love this weapon, it does everything you need it to, an insta kill gun, a vehicle destroyer, a spotter, and a potential sniper with the balanced bolt

DICE bases weapons on real-life counterparts, being that the AR-platform is modular and has a crossbow upper receiver available for it, it was much easier for them to simply copy the PSE TAC-15 directly and put it in game, than to create their own franken-gun from an AK platform. Basically, yes it would make more sense for eastern bloc weapons to be modified, but DICE took the easy road and just modeled a real thing. also,SPEC-OPs units actually do use these SOMETIMES for zipline launchers.

yes, there is the tac-15, but the aftermath reasoning for the crossbow is that the m16 malfunctioned, so the soldiers used car wire, and scrap metal to fashion crossbows. at least that's what dice said.

I used to use the xbow with explosive bolts to take out helicopters when I would run my sniper recon set up. Disable on one, destroy on the second if they don't crash from the first. It was great if you could find some hard cover and get them to fly over your head, easy shot into the belly of the chopper. Used to do that on Damavand Peak all the time. If I was having good sniping success I'd always get attention from the pilots.

one correction lvlcap: the xbow is on slot 3, which replaces the support class's ammo pack, not C4/claymore/mortar. this obviously makes it really useless in many scenarios, since the ammo pack is pretty important.

Thank you for this very complete tutorial. Now for a little bow practice. We are not allowed to deer hunt with these in my state so it will be fun. I can deer hunt with the same weapon as I normally do in BF3. 870 slug 6X scope. Just like my deer rifle we "lob em' in" at 100 yards for the head shot. Too fun and BF3 enemies always freak out when shotgunned at 200 yards.

lol maybe i'm not reading this correctly. for reference, an average .45 acp "ball" bullet is 230 grains. are you saying the entire crossbow bolt only weighs less than 2 .45 acp bullets? also, typical military ammo in 5.56mm is "ball" type. the idea is that it tumbles, not fragments. the cavity from that is much longer... like 13 inches or something.

Not really, I tested to see how long it actually scans on the mini-map, and each scan bolt only lasts about 5 seconds. So by the time you reload, the last one is gone.

I actually prefer the scoped crossbow. If you use it on hardcore game modes with balanced bolts, you can essentially use it like an all-kit sniper rifle.

I enjoyed using the crossbow (instant kill bolt) for classes like Engineer/Support, where there are no vehicles (like Metro, or TDM Canals). Its a great weapon to pick off enemies, or to end close ranged engagements fast if you're dry on your main weapon and pistol. Other than that... in my opinion, the xbow doesn't really have any uses from there. Its better to use RL/C4 in maps that has vehicles. Engie/Support are important with their RL/C4, and the Xbow is imo a bad replacement.

The balanced bolt will kill in one shot before the damage dropoff due to the chest damage multiplier of 1.25. 1.25 X 80 is 100!

also if you were un armored and got shot i think the crossbow would do more damage than the Armour piercing bullet i mean if you think about it the bullet will go straight through and not transfer all the force to you so you might live unless its a head shot but a xbow bolt will put all the force into you and the barbed end will maim your flesh so at least if they get hit by the bolt there more likely to be knocked over either way i wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of either

I am a gun nut I admit I also have Firearms training I have fired many rifles, shotguns, handguns. Ill mention the bf3 rifle rounds that will penetrate most body armor just so you know- 5.56X45, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, 7.62X51, 7.62X54, and obviously the .338 lupua. Any ways I no its just a game, its definitely not supposed to be realistic I understand that, but when someone actually thinks a cross bolt is more powerful than a rifle round because of a video game it really worries me.

and it takes both of them 2 shots two kill at a certain ideal range, this is because there is a 2.0 times multiplies on the damage if u shoot ur enemy in the head, in core mode where the player has 100 health both the m9 and m1911 will only kill with two shots assuming ur close. M9=25 damage max M1911=34 damage max none of these numbers when multiplied by 2 become superior or equal to 100 therefore they do not kill in 1 shot, except the M1911 in hardcore mode

Yeah it's strange in battlefield you can stab someone with a knife or shoot with a crossbow and get an insta-kill, yet it takes multiple rounds to take them out with a rifle.
