Patient should avoid using heating pads on feet to prevent skin from potentially burning, which can result in blisters.

Absolutely correct! Decreased sensation means increased risk of injury! --Meris

Diabetic patients should not use a heating pad in their feet, because they already suffer from peripheral neuropathy. Which can make them less sensitive to pain which could potentially lead to burns.

Thank you! My stepdad is coming home and I need to care for his diabetic and feet needs. A heating pad seems as though it would create moisture to help foot breakdown. Also, a diabetic might have the heating pad too hot just as you stated about showering and checking the temperature.

So I am a 88 year old lady, I am not in nursing school. Why don’t I use a heating pad on my feet. Please teach to all of use.

Individuals with diabetes often have neuropathy, which causes decreased sensation in the feet. If the heating pad is too hot, they won’t feel that and may end up burn injuries.

diabetic patients have decreased sensory receptors in their extremities so they are at risk for burns. (diabetic neuropathy)
