When I (male) had a catheter inserted some years ago it hurt like hell. Dunno why the burse can't apply some kind of numbing gel. When I had a bladder endoscopy more recently I'm sure the endoscopist lubricated the urethra with a gel first. It was uncomfortable, but not painful.

I am watching this video on March 2, 2024. I was desperate to see why two RN's had no success in inserting an in and out catheter, in my elderly husband who appears to have a bladder infection. Both nurses complained there was something blocking the tube from entering and caused severe bleeding from the penis! What I have observed from your video, watching it twice was that the tube end was not run through the provided lubricant jelly! Do you think that may have been a reason for their failure. When this procedure is done in the ER of a hospital, they have no problem collecting the sample. Thank you so much. Heather Ontario, Canada

Sometimes you have to push the lubricated catheter gently further until you see urine

@@Omegaconnectsdidnt you read her question right.she said they couldnt push it through and the penis was bleeding.no good trying to push thru if it wont go.poor man my must have been in pain.may have had prostate trouble or maybe stricture.

Don’t forget to give your patients information on how to manage, sleep, stabilize, hygiene, supplies, concerns etc before you send them home. Otherwise they will be back at office or emergency with issues that could easily be avoided with a little good information.

I had this done twice. Wish the hole was that big. This procedure is super uncomfortable.

Was going to comment on that hole that is big enough to drive a truck through! Not useful for teaching as then they will be completely inexperienced on a real insertion.

You use the word, "grab" a few times that made me wince. This is a very delicate procedure in a very delicate area. The penis and catheter are not things to "grab", at all, but to be handled carefully, sensitively and slowly. Its possible to do some damage otherwise. If you had a penis. It would be a moot point.

shouldnt foreskin be retracted and glans swabbed?

If the patient is uncircucised, yes. This particular manikin is not equipped with a foreskin.

Thank you for including instructions on if the patient has a foreskin. I've seen so many videos where the instructor/nurse failed to even mention it and is just like "clean the glans with circular motions." Um, you won't even be able to see the glans if foreskin is present. 🤦‍♂
