The fact that she stopped studying at age 25 to pursue her dreams is really inspiring. It's so weird being on the other side of 20 feeling like it's too late to do stuff even though it's still the beginning of ur life. Also people often forget all the backing vocals she did on the path to hone her skills: Working with Tosin Abasi Being backing vocals for TRAM (Progressive Jazz Metal supergroup) Doing backing vocals for Sheera etc I often wonder what got her in those situations

I 100% agree, I relate to feeling like I’m too old for certain artistic adventures but this video helped me realize it never too late! truly inspiring

The Sheera I am referring to is Sheera Ehrig, Kelela did backing vocals for some performances of this EP (not sure if she had writing credits also) soundcloud.com/sheera-marie-ehrig/sets/sandbox-ep-2011 Turns out Sheera also has writing credits on Guns & Synths and also did some backing vocals on TRAM. Tosin Abasi from TRAM is based in Washington so I'm location and proximity to jazz music is a big part of how these people came together

I had the pleasure of seeing her twice in DC and her parents were in the audience. She was so good and really had a great time delivering her music for the fans to the point where she went over on her set and kept going despite the venue pressing her to end the show. She’s got a fan in me!

I found kelela's music on soundcloud when I was like 16 and completely fell in love. I'm now in my mid twenties and discovered my love for music production. Feeling like it's too late but everyone has their own timing and I'm just getting started. She for sure created her own lane and I love that.

Omg, this video was so well done! I love Kelela, but I only knew the basics about her being second gen Ethiopian-American and from the DMV. It's so inspiring to see someone brave enough to take a leap and follow their dreams especially when they thought their time had come and gone. I had no idea she was almost 40. P.S. I've watched several of your videos over the past few days and my triflin ass is now subscribed

ty! Her story was so interesting to go over, it's crazy how many genres she went through and then only started making her own music in her late 20's. Really courageous to leave university because you know you can't take not being with your purpose anymore, but you only have a semester left. The experience of listening to her feels so much richer now I know how long it took and how much work she had to do just to release her first body of work

Is this the kind of length vid you want to see? Is there too much on the childhood? Is it boring when there isn’t a lot of childhood footage say for smaller artists like Kelela (the only footage/picture I could find is the one in the beginning lol)? Would you like to see more aesthetic retro kiiiiiiiind of related footage whenever possible instead of just using the artist’s interviews and live shows? Should I add more LA drop shots? mmmm…LA at night….

The scene in NY around 2013 was so good! Going to Fade to Mind / Night Slugs club nights at the sadly now defunct venue Steel Drums felt like finding my tribe, and Kelela (still somewhat unknown during this time) would jump on the mic to sing over their metallic other worldly beats, which reminded me of Timbaland's most adventurous and lethal productions during the late 90's & early 00's ("Enemy" is a perfect example of this). This would turn out to be songs from her debut mixtape. I just remember thinking "this is IT! This is everything I could want in an r&b/pop artist!"

Whats strange to me is that after all these years of struggling, grinding and feeling like she has missed the boat she finaly gets to release her first album, go on tour, release music videos and then.. crickets. She seems to be really struggling with her identity and i'm sorry she never got to see people just as humans rather than black or white. I've noticed this in her interviews but it seems to be something thats been with her since she was a child. Something that she wasnt able to let go of and has been holding her back her whole life.
