Unlike many videos on vintage Levis, this one is informative, watchable, and not full of disinformation. I have quite a few vintage Levis jackets myself and have a few points to add. There are significant differences between vintage and modern Levis jackets besides the big E in the red tab and the place of manufacture. The most important difference is modern jackets are made from poor quality, rough on the skin, lightweight denim. Modern jackets won't last, don't fade well, and are a poor value. Used vintage jackets on ebay in good condition are still about half the price of modern store bought jackets. One important difference is that Levis two pocket jackets came in both regular and long lengths. The regular length looks a lot better - unless you are tall which requires you buy the long length or the jacket bottom will end above your waist. Once Levi's went to the four pocket jacket (handy side slash pockets) they had to lengthen the jacket to accommodate the extra pockets. So four pocket jackets don't look as good (unless you are tall) and probably the reason two pocket jackets are more valued. Even though big E jackets are worth more, other than that there is really no difference between big E and small e Levis two pocket jackets - both are great products. In fact, small e jackets are good because you don't feel guilty wearing and beating them up. Regarding sizing, I have found that two pockets jackets are smaller than four pocket jackets of the same size. If you are buying a two pocket add two inches. If it is a four pocket buy your true size. So if you have a 42 inch chest buy a 44 if a two pocket or a 42 if a four pocket.

Thats a lot of good information and a good insight on the length. I was not aware that the vintage jackets came in two lengths. The vintage jackets were definitely made of quality denim!!

drwisdom1 - Would you be willing to consider reviewing some photos of a Levi’s jacket that I purchased today on Etsy? I’ve never owned a Levi’s brand clothing before; and I know now that these items can be replicated/counterfeited. Seller claims it to be a vintage “orange tag” from the 70’s. The jacket has shearling wool layered on the inside. I have looked at numerous photos online with no definitive comparison. If this item is deemed counterfeit, I will cancel the order immediately before it ships out.

Wow! Nice collection! Especially the first two jackets that you presented with the Troy wool lining - beautiful condition and now difficult to find in any shape. I hope you still have them. The jacket that was manufactured in Turkey, and the last jacket that was presented, made in the USA, were made by LVC (Levi’s Vintage Collection) originally manufactured in the 90’s, and were made as reproductions of earlier Levi’s products, and were made to quite a high standard. I would love to see a new video of your current denim collection Thanks for sharing.

My neighbor's friend randomly gave me an '80s Levi's jacket. I was wondering if there was a way to pinpoint an exact year. All I know it's one of the 1984 and after Type 3 "trucker" designs. It has 2 inside & front pockets + the 2 typical hand warmer pockets. Lot number: "71506-0214." The back of the buttons have 777 on them and the wash tag has "777 9-7 59170 5" on the bottom of it, along with the lot number. The stitching under the front pocket flaps is like a navy blue.

When I said chest pockets I really meant to say waist pockets/side pockets. Vintage trucker jackets had just two breast pockets. The ones after mid 80's started having the side pockets. The type II model shown here is made in Japan. The Levi's LVC brand that makes vintage reissues are made in the USA, Japan, and most recently in Turkey.

great video, very informative. How can one tell the difference between a genuine big E Type III jacket and a later LVC reissue? Aren't the LVC jackets big E as well?
@kailazz
@kailazz 6 жыл бұрын
David Snow the newer ones have new care label. Early Big E LVC reissues had “555” buttons stamped on them and were made in San Francisco. Then they had “R” buttons stamped. Newer ones most recent ones are Made in Turkey and have Levis Vintage Clothing Tag. The vintage big E have letter “D” or “0” “17” or three letter numbers starting with a 5. The care label on true vintage jackets may or may not be on the collar. These are some of the identifiers. I may still have missed a few. But mostly it is the buttons!

Thanks. I just bought a nice dark indigo Big E Type III on ebay for $120. It's worth it for the Made in USA quality. In addition to the points you made, I think the leather collar size tag on the originals are smaller/rectangular compared to the repros. All my jeans are 30 year old made in USA levis that are like kevlar compared to the modern paper thin levis.

Unless you purchased the Levis Vintage Collection, the newer Big E is just that. Nothing significant but the Levi’s Premium collection. I hate Levi’s started using the Big E again for their regular clothing line. I am not sure the first question you asked. I really do not know what the differences are. Could be the later numbers could be the code where the jacket was manufactured maybe!

I have seen that the type II jacket that were reissued do tend to shrink. The original vintage ones do shrink too! The one shown here is a Japanese reissue from 2001. The size says 40 but the measure underarm pit to pit is 21.5 inches. No shrinkage on this one (my guess). Best way to get your true size is look for actual measurements and ask the seller if they have not listed the true size.

@@1986teambeast When denim became so popular in the late 60's and 70's. Levi's were opening factories all over the world. What makes you think that it might be fake?? Does it have the letter D or O stamped on the buttons? This is one way to verify that it is genuine and not fake! Does it still have the Levis tag intact? I have two 557's: one has the Levis patch with yellow stitching and another with black stitching. Both has letter D stamped.

I don't know.. just a feeling! ;) No, the button is stamped with J02. And yes the levis tag is still intact. but its vague. The stitching is yellow.

J02 on the buttons means that it is a Japanese re-issue. Not a fake Levis. You have a Japanese made Levi's and probably from early 2000's

I purchased a large levi denim jacket on ebay number 70507-4890. What do the numbers mean? Im 6’1 195 and the arms seem really lose even with a hoodie underneath. It has a small e, and it has hand pockets

Most of the jackets are US made. There is one from Japan, one from Hong Kong, one from Macau and one from Turkey!

I was lucky to find one last night Made in USA vintage...I had to buy larger than my tru size to fit...it seems L in 1960-70s was a lot smaller than today. Thanks

Hey, I’m trying to find this specific Levi’s jacket and I literally can’t find it anywhere. You really seem to know what you’re talking about and any help would really be useful mate. The jacket’s worn by Cole Sprouse: www.seenit.in/quest/show/21750

Connor Ambler not sure if this is a vintage Big E but i think thing this is newer ones. Your best bet could be ebay. Most of this kind come with white sherpa lining. This is the one that most resembles the one in the pic rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F312086167136

william velasco i still prefer Big E. In fact Capital E was a line Levi’s introduced before the Levi’s Vintage Clothing collection. They sold Capital E clothing lines.
