Please, PLEASE keep these coming. Symphony X material and Michael Romeo’s guitar mastery are grossly underrepresented on KZbin- this is pure gold to me

Your idea of one SX riff every week is great! Keep it up, congratz.

at @12:05, I remember watching an interview where Romeo or Rullo said something about this riff (or maybe the one from Wicked) being in 13/4 or something, on purpose. There was an actual association with the number 13, because of the concept of bad luck and darkness (the character in the song is about to be torn apart by a pendulum). And, of course, the final iteration must be different to keep the 4/4 rhythm underneath.

this translates to "buddy rehearsal language" to: "ok, we do one ti-ru, then anotherti-ru plus one ti-ru, then another ti-ru plus 2 ti-ru and last ti-ru plus 3 ti-ru" Theory sometimes makes things more difficult to understand that what really are but i guess it's a solution for those without that natural sense of rythim or groove. And also makes it more "pro" :-D

This was amazing. I'm new to this style of guitar playing and Michael Romeo is just mega. Iv always heard great things about him but iv never given him any attention. I regret that now cause my god he's scary good. This lesson was fun to learn. Cheers Levi 🤘

Awesome vid. How about some of the theory behind the key changes and how they manage to make them sound so musical? This is a simple half step but somehow it sounds so right.
@radumilicin6 жыл бұрын
it sounds so good because they are only power chords.You could say that the riff is in d minor because there are the e and f power chords which are in key.Afterwards he changes it into c# minor.I hope i'm right,if not,feel free to correct me.

Amazing analysis! Thank you for sharing this quality content. I appreciated it very much, being a big music fan but being a person that doesn't know much about music theory and doesn't have an advanced musical training. This helps a lot to learn and I cannot emphasize enough how satisfying to learn by means of one of my favorite bands: Symphony X. Cheers from México!

Great lesson, great analysis. Not only is the riff rhythmically challenging, it's also hard not to get string noise where there should be silence!

Levi - excellent work on this video. There are simply so many awesome riff/musical examples from the SYX catalogue to just pick one, but please permit me to suggest some... The main riff (and perhaps the solo as I hear some wholetone scale which is interesting) of the 'Eyes of Medusa; The final minute of the track ''Seven'' The intro riff from 'The lords of Chaos' Virtually all of the rhythm playing on the track 'Evolution' I also have no idea what is going on in the first guitar part from the track Iconoclast. I'm not sure if any of these really represent the metric modulation side of things that you reference in your video - but these are some of my favourite SYX riffs.

Great break down! When that drum part after the 14/8 snare hit on beat 2 come in just throws me off, my brain wants to put it in another place. Not sure if you are familiar with the band Tower of Power they have a new recoding and the tune After hours has a super confusing snare part that plays on strange beats-very unconventional not metal but would be an interesting look-thanks for the insightful videos

Ah, Should I tell him? Ok, will do then :D Yes, he will install an Evertune bridge to my Ibanez Prestige RG with an Edge Zero bridge on it. Even tiny changes in the tuning were driving me crazy. So I have decided to try Evertune.

Isn't this poly-metric vs metric modulation, as they are not modulating to a new metric, but rather playing one on top of the other. Enjoyed the vid. Symphony X is the best.
@LeviClay3 жыл бұрын
No, they’re literally not playing two rhythms at the same time. They use the 8th note pulse of 12 to shift down to 8ths so creating the illusion of slowing down

Will you be doing a vid on the new Guitar Pro update?
@LeviClay6 жыл бұрын
you're the third person to ask now haha have they included nested tuplets? Or any of the endless features that I pointed out they needed to be on par with other professional options.... several hours of my time... for free... at THEIR request? No... Fuck them then.

Yeah, was reading the new features after writing that comment and was left wanting more, to say the least! The way they marketed it it seemed like quite a large, free update but alas...
