Chess in the U.S.S.R. produced a lot of strong creative duos: Koblenz-Tal, Boleslavsky-Petrosian, Bondarevsky-Spassky, but perhaps the most noticeable one was the tandem of Furman and Karpov. And indeed, it is almost impossible to imagine one without the other... Would Anatoly have become the Karpov we know, if not for his wise mentor, who literally became his second father? One may wonder whether Semyon - who'd survived cancer- would have lived, if not for the encounter with this brilliant student who gave him strength and creative energy.
They came together in 1969... As a new junior World Champion and second coach who has previously worked with many elite players, including Botvinnik, Bronstein, Petrosyan and Korchnoi. Karpov, for the sake of Furman, moved from Moscow to Leningrad, and the latter severed all previous chess ties, and focussed on working with him only.
"Furman, of course, was like a child, and all the organizational work fell on my shoulders, and then I was barely 18 years old," Karpov recalls not without pride. - "So, maybe it was even for the best, did it strengthen you?" - Ilya Levitov specifies. "Maybe!"
Their chess tandem existed for almost ten years. Furman passed away a few months before the start of the match in Baguio-1978, in which Karpov had to fight for the crown he'd inherited from Fischer. The World Champion dedicated the victory to the memory of his teacher.
