Thanks for this video! Do you think it’s odd the white filter goes in that way? It feels to me that the side with the folds should be facing the other way. Gives more surface area for the entering air to latch onto.

I think the big differentiator here is the smart version of this purifier brings alot to the table at the price point that doesn't exist for other air purifiers. The smart aspects can't be ignored, and really need to be standard on all new appliances of this sort coming out. Anything involved with air processing (AC's, Heaters, Purifiers, etc) should all be looking at trying to get those smart features in a compact/budget form as standard. I really applaud Levoit for seemingly trying to do this, but I will concede it is not the cheapest model when factoring in the cost of the filters. I would point out that at this time the filters are currently down to $33/filter for 2 filters on Amazon, which is possibly the best pricing I've seen and the filters do seem to last quite a while having had one for almost 4 months now and it has done a good job of filtering a relative's smoking smell that has stayed with us over that time. The big carrot maybe to look for the smart version and see if you can purchase that on a discount (I believe i found it for $145 on a discount at bestbuy in the first quart of 2022). So check it out again if you can.

The reset button needs to be pushed when you change the filters. However, it is very difficult both to view and access and then push in with a pencil tip. Not at all simple to push in the tiny black button and hold it down for 5 seconds. Each filter change is traumatic trying to get the red filter light to go off. I had hoped you might comment on this but you didn't seem to notice the problem. (I did purchase a larger Levoit for the living room/dining room and the quality is terrific.)

presumably in a small room where filtering VOC is perhaps the main target then this one would be better than the germ guardian thing you mention towards the end of the video ? in the uk they don't sell the 5500-2 otherwise that would be a good option for me. I'm concerned about people saying that they don't sell genuine replacement filters for this though.

How to buy an original filters for this unit if I am in the UK. Levoit website only sells to the USA. :(. And Amazon and ebay are all full of "replacement" filters, not the original ones. Can't trust those replacements.

Hello, I was just wondering how you know that there are carbon pellets? I don't see this advertised other than calling it honeycomb. But isn't it possible to just put a fibrous carbon coated layer? I mean, I suppose you looked at and can tell that way?
@consumer-analysis
@consumer-analysis 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's easy to see the pellets when you visually inspect the filter.

@@consumer-analysis That's great. So it's main drawbacks are the pre-filter and lower CFM. The main room I'd be using it in is about 130sq ft, so it'd look like this would be enough but when taking into account cubic feet, it looks like this unit may fall slightly short. I know I want a carbon filter with pellets. The H133 has higher CFM and pellets, whereas the vista 300 has the same CFM but mixed messages on the carbon filter. I know you're big on the winex 5500-2, but it's slightly more expensive than the H133 in Canada. Also, does the order of the filters matter? For example, from the outside to the inside, Carbon is before HEPA on the winex, but it's reversed on the others. If you have any recommendations taking the above considerations into account, that would be appreciated!
@consumer-analysis
@consumer-analysis 4 жыл бұрын
@@andrew_zed3162 If you can get the H133 for cheaper, it's not a bad option. I recommend taking a look at the filter costs for it vs the 5500-2 as well to get a better idea of long term cost of ownership. As to order of the filters, I do think that having the carbon filter first is better for two reasons - 1. the metal grille holding the carbon pellets in place can double as a sort of extra "pre-filter" for the HEPA filter and 2. small particles of carbon may loosen from the pellets in the carbon filter over time. When/if that happens the HEPA filter can immediately catch those particles if it's behind the filter (vs in front of it).

@@consumer-analysis Thanks for your thoughts. I went through your written reviews on the two units now as well. I can see more and more why the Winix 5500-2 is the superior unit. I like how you've managed to induce a golden mean for the units. It seems clear that the Levoits are limited for how much filtration they can process over time with their maximum value being far less than the Winex. For example on the Levoit Pur131 specs it states: "Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR): 135 CFM (230 m³/h)". This is barely one full cycle of a small room per hour, if I understand correctly. The two values listed do not correspond at a proportionate rate, seeming to indicate what you say in your review that overall capacity and output is reached quickly, and reaches a pretty hard limit to produce further filtration. It's as if to say that their CFM is only true for a short time period, and limited volume. Seems to me the decision is clear, which is great.

I also like your reviews but unfortunately, most suggested models are the USA available only so I really can't choose one in Europe which one I need to buy. I need something which will be used up to 30m2. I want washable prefilter, HEPA and activated carbon indeed. Also, I am noise sensitive so silent one would be nice.

So i'm back after a few days regarding my comments about the 5500-2 vs the C545. I really like the 5500-2, but I REALLY want the smart features. The 5500-2 does use a lot of filtration but it seems to make my room hot during the day before the ac kicks on. I'm sure that has something to do with increased airflow. Also doesn't seem to shoot straight up like the C545 and hit all around the room, it's more spread out. I like being able to adjust the filter and blast it a bit before getting home as it makes the air feel a bit cleaner and can't do that with the 5500-2. Would this LVPUR-131 (S) is the same version but with wifi - be equivalent to the 5500-2 on high and not turbo at max settings? Since it uses close to a AOC carbon filter (obviously not washable) as well as the true hepa? It seems to have all the features I want. I do like a little bit of semi ok ambient noise, and I think the LVPUR seems to have that since it's smaller. Another question, does a smaller filter always mean less powerful? Or is it all about the CFM and the allergens/dust/odor per hour ratio? I know while you may not recommend this, I am only purifying 150 square foot rooms here, possible 250 max. I suffer from dust and pollen allergies. NOTE the C545 is 30% a smaller unit than the 5500-2 and I really like it. Has great CFM and same delivery rate just about. Just doesn't have that carbon filter which I love and has the stinky smelly carbon sheets that I don't like. But has the wifi I like and I prefer the look of this for my game room. I'm fine waiting a while longer for it to purify the room if it "feels" good is the main thing and doesn't heat up my room. My only concern is the lack of ionization, but I know some of the best pure air filters don't have them.. so it doesn't matter THAT much.
@consumer-analysis
@consumer-analysis 4 жыл бұрын
For a 150 sq. ft. room the LVPUR-131S will work (it has sufficient output). Filter size does tend to correlate with output but I recommend looking at the listed CADR or CFM instead of filter size to determine the output of the air purifier.

@@consumer-analysis That's true. Just wish they made a Wi-Fi variant of the 5500-2 and it would be perfect for me. Wish there was something similar with an AOC filter.

I have (had) this air purifier. It konked out on me yesterday after just over 1 year of use, so it's out of warranty. There is a known issue with this unit: the capacitors fail, rending it useless. According to reports, it very often stops working shortly after the one year mark. Waste of money, and that pisses me off. Also, when it DID work, it was initially very quiet. It became much louder over time. I would NOT recommend this product at all.

I own this air purifier and have concluded there is zero way it can properly filter the air. Why? Because of the open vent at the top. It allows for dust to settle and collect in large quantities, and to fill the entire inside of the unit. This is impossible to clean, even with an air compressor. Therefore, you are constantly blowing dirty air back into the space you are trying to purify. If you own this or any other purifier with open top vents, take a flash light and look inside. You may be shocked. I'm now experimenting with a diy box fan air purifier, using a 5" Merv 13 filter. It is easy to clean all internal parts of the box fan and has a total cost of $50. Any idea how to determine the CFM output of this kind of system? And if someone has a solution to the Levoit or any purifier with top open vent/dust magnet issue, please comment. Thanks
