People have always competed in hierarchies of skill. It's fun which is reward enough for most, but the top players receive status and can even make money. It's the same as pretty much any other competitive game/sport. Considering that most living things, especially social beings, exist in hierarchies, it's not far fetched to assume that aliens might as well. If so they'd understand. But if they had some other way of ordering their society then it's truly anyone's guess
