Just bought this reel for $60 USD. Planning to take it out tomorrow. I have it on a 7 foot medium rod (1. it was more in my price range and 2. I can use it for pan fish as well as bass). THe pond I'll be at is VERY small. Has lots of Pan fish, catfish and, at least, a few large mouth bass. This is my first time stepping into a "Baitcasting" reel. There were cheaper reels at Wal-Mart but I at least wanted to go with a reel with a little notoriety. Maybe I'll pop back in tomorrow with a reply to this message on how it performed for me. Kinda sad that it is a "Right handed" reel though. I'd like a lefty so I can cast right and reel left. Out of the box, I will say that I wish each end of the handle arms were about 1/2 inch longer simply because I'm very tall, 6' 8" (203.2 cm). Trying to turn the handles it feels just a little cramped for me.

OK, I caught a single 1 pound Large mouth Bass. Sitting on a bed. It took 3 different lures, (6 inch Lizard, Live worm on a bobber, and 4 inch Shad) before I got the bass to strike. They REALLY didn't like the paddle tail shad near their bed. Super heavy grass where I was. The bass were actually bedding in a tiny pocket in the grass near the shore which made casting to them difficult. However, with a weightless Texas rig on the shad they hit it over and over again. Took 5 tries before I got the hook set. I will say that my setup, this reel and an Abu Garcia Medium Vengeance rod do NOT like light lures. I tried casting a 3/16 oz crank with a split in the middle and couldn't get it to go further than 15 feet without a backlash. I tried adjusting both the brakes and the spool tension but couldn't get it dialed in. Additionally, Using a baitcaster has a HUGE learning curve. I feel like I need to talk to someone more familiar with baitcasting rods in order to figure out how to cast far, and more accurately, with the lures I have in my box. That being said, once you get a feel for it and have the reel kinda tuned for your lure you can make some amazing casts. The heavier the rig the easier time I had. (0 Backlashes but the rig was so big it scared the bass). I was hoping to catch panfish as well as bass with this setup but I feel like the ability to throw light lures is very limited. Finally, having an external brake adjustment feels very easy to use. The drag actually clicks to let you know how much it had been moved. I think My only complaint was that the Spool Tension Knob did NOT click. Other than that I think this is a wonderful beginner's baitcaster as long as you watch a lot of videos on how to actually use one so you can get an idea of what to do. Also, setting the hook requires WAY more power than you think it does. Set that hook like you're trying to yank a rope that has 100 pounds tied to the other end. Trust Me.

Great write up. Yes it will struggle with 3/16th of an ounce about 5gr for this you would need a BFS reel. You could try putting less line on to help with backlashes but keep the cast smooth. I use 7gr Texas weights plus lures which equates to about 10gr and it’s great with them. Probably get away eith 5gr lead plus lure but that’s about it.

@@TheConstantAngler Thank you. When I had the weight (3.5 g) on the 15 cm lizard I had 0 backlash and could cast a long way. The stick bait on a weightless Texas didn't do bad once I learned to "swing" instead of "throw" (I found backlash happened more if the lure jerked against the reel while in the air) The 10 cm paddle-tail shad tended to give a little more backlash but I think a lot of that had to do with my excitement of trying to tempt a bass that I could see. Lol.

@@singingwolf3929crazy I read this comment. I have the same reel and almost the exact same rod. My rod is also an abu Garcia vengeance but it is a 7’ medium heavy fast action rod. I’ve seen people buy different spools to use lighter baits somewhere on KZbin. I might give that a try. I also haven’t tried the setup yet. But will try it sometime this week!

will this reel handle the catfish? or some small perch lures
@TheConstantAngler3 жыл бұрын
Don’t think it would have the guts. The Superduty would be the one to go for.

Hi Adrian. Hope you are well bud. I've managed to track one of these down £51.99 so pleased. Looking forward to delivery. What line would you advise for this reel ? Kind Regards Chris

If your using it for Wrasse then 20lb braid I think I have Spiderwire Stealth Smooth on it which is working quite nicely but any 20lb braid will do. If there is a particular braid you like go with that

I’m so impressed I’d go with this which is pretty much the same reel with more bearings and an aluminium frame. Depends what your using it for.
