In this interview, as on This is Your Life, Lewis Collins looks just like Dredger, a hugely popular comic strip character in the ’70s, as he appeared in the story The Man Who Died Twice (17 April, 1976). He’s dressed exactly the same, has the same hairstyle, and even wears the same medallion. Incidentally, this attire, including the medallion, is similar to what he wears in the opening credits of The Cuckoo Waltz, It's All Greek to Me (10 January 1977). Lewis Collins would’ve made a great Bond but I think he really wanted to be Dredger and, in a sense, his wish came true. Dredger was a character in a comic strip about a pair of agents of British counter-terrorist unit DI6, published in Action from 14 February 1976 until 12 November 1977. Lewis Collins played Bodie, a character (who looks and behaves like Dredger) in The Professionals, a TV series about a pair of agents of British counter-terrorist unit CI5, first broadcast on 30 December 1977.

Living in the YTV region in 1982 I clearly remember seeing this interview on Calendar. I have a feeling that the female newsreader was named Miriam. Saw the film shortly thereafter and loved it. I visited The Union Chapel in Islington a few weeks ago - where some of Who Dares Wins was shot - and it was surreal. Still looks the same! RIP Lewis Collins, I used to wear an army jacket and tell everyone my middle name was Lewis. It isn't.
@HirstyGod7 жыл бұрын
Marilyn Webb I think.
@Spartanm3337 жыл бұрын
Yes Marilyn Webb. Went on to form a production company and be an independent producer when YTV was mullered by an inept executive team. At one point you couldn't raise an electrician or plumber because they were 'on location' at an executives home doing guvvy jobs on the company clock. In a cost cutting exercise, they put an accountant on every department and offered payments to staff to leave to reduce headcount - up to £30K was paid to each person to tear up their contract and pension in 1984. The creative talent and experienced staff said yes thanks and walked out the door including Marilyn, straight to the BBC or abroad. Richard Whitely was gifted £250K to make sure he stayed but it was the beginning of the end. You would walk in on a Monday morning and a whole team had gone.1800 staff either left or were made redundant and the company eventually shut down. Now the studios are a shell production company. What an incredible example of ineptitude and greed. A thriving community and beacon of excellence in Leeds laid to ruin. Sir Paul Fox. former CE must have been gutted that the company he built and developed into a world wide concern was sold down the river by faceless executives who then moved on to the next cash cow. NHS I believe.

I think they were SAS, for a couple of reasons: SAS would have had to spend ages training any extras/stuntmen to accurately portray regiment procedure (much of which was dangerous, highly-skilled helicopter and height based activity), time that would have taken them away for active availability. The regiment are obviously very proud and protective of their reputation and, as they were involved in an 'advisory capacity' would only have done so if they had editorial control over SAS operational content, they would hardly be expected to allow representation of certain skills that they had spent years perfecting be carried out by outsiders with only a few weeks training. Probably the most cost-effective solution would have been to let the SAS perform much of the actual raid footage themselves. This, of course, is all speculation

The ironic thing here is that Richard Whitely was a British Agent, albeit intelligence rather than a James Bond action figure. He does seen rather enthusiastic throughout the interview. Always good to have someone within the media channels and the nerdy buffoonery he projected gave good cover. Off camera, he was quiet and most often thoughtful and serious. Lewis Collins would have made a good Bond but he took himself a little too seriously... needed a touch of the Michael Caine really, relax, tell a joke, be normal in interviews.
