Okay, but McClaren just introduced the "pushrod on upright" suspension design, which prior to the French GP only Mercedes was using...and only Mercedes could properly manage the tires and find extra pace. McClaren obviously realizes they need to keep their designs similar to that of the best teams, otherwise you wont be as fast as them. Pretty clear cut if you ask me.

Ferrari put Vettel on brand new soft tire with a couple of laps to go so that he could collect the extra point for fastest lap, well Lewis with totally blistered Hard tires on the final lap went for the fastest lap and only missed by 2/100 of a second to show the difference in drivers, the hard tire were rated 1.2 seconds slower than the soft and this shows the skill of Lewis.

I’m a bit surprised about the improvement in absolute lap time being approx 1.7 seconds over 2018 given that on average it’s been around 6-7 tenths on nearly every venue F1 has been to thus far this season. I guess the ‘partly’ resurfaced tarmac impacted that to an extent, but there has to be something else to it as well.
