Okay so my question is you said that the central atom has to be zero and if you get it possitive the structures wrong In NO3- my octet is correct and the number of electrons but my central atom formal charge is +1 and I can't add a second double bond to make it zero because N is not a exception and can't have 5bonds what do I do?

Hi, thank you so much I get it more! But one question, I thought that the formal charge formula looks like: FC= #valance electrons -(#non-bonding + 1/2 bonding electrons) because that’s what I’ve been learning. So is the 1/2 not necessary? Thank you so much though !!!

Can anyone explain when she does [SO4]-2, why sulfer does not form only 2 bonds? i thought since it was in group 16, it would only want to form 2 bonds, not 4. Thank you!
@jabtechnologies873
@jabtechnologies873 Жыл бұрын
lol funny fact i just discovered from your video e.g the ,SO4 question, that since we already know the number of ve of s, and it being on the middle means it has no lone pairs therefore the number of bonds required will be the difference between 6 and 0 which is 6, hence we will require 6 bonds in total between all atoms after which we can add the lone pairs #32 total😅😅 f.c = 6 - (B + 0) = 0 therefore 6 makes the equation 0😅

What do you do if, in order to make the central atom have a formal charge of zero, you can't meet the octet rule? Which is more important if you can't do both? For example- CCl2. To make carbon have a FC of zero, carbon will be left with only 6 valence electrons and carbon is not an exception to the octet rule.

For the last one, does OH need to be done the way she did it in lewis structure or are their other possibilities? Like having 3 H around N and an O on the right. The way it was written out kind of explains the way she did the lewis structure but I was just wondering if it's allowed to do it other ways or not.
