I appreciate you both for daring to fiercely search different ways to help the masses heal and to know that we are not alone. I am very self aware. However, I have felt so stuck in life by interruptions and my subconscious reaction I suppose. Watching your videos and staying focused on God chips away at the broken hardened parts of me. Thank you 🙏🏽 Truly and I wish you both lots of success in healing many !

Emotional abuse , toxic family and attracting toxic Relationship , not being able to easily leave toxicity due to toxic conditioning being normalised since childhood , guilt shame manipulation and losing ownself people pleasing , keeping own self last as a way of survival , being passive Aggressive , not being able to form boundaries as conditioned made one believe you deserve love only of you are perfect and people pleasing. Its hell to live with thse patterns when one doesn't recognise it. If you have recognised it and is working towards healing them. I am proud of you. May the Divine force be with you. ♥️💜💙

I'm a FIRM Believer that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. I've been in a very complicated situation with my family for many years. Most of which I was unconsciously a participant in the dysfunction. However, after years of dealing with guilt, shame, anger, depression and anxiety I finally had a spiritual awakening. I'm learning to create boundaries but when it's with your children and parents that can be extremely difficult. I randomly woke up at 2:00AM and the universe sent me this video. Needless to say I'm beyond grateful to hear someone else's story. Thank you so much for giving me a peace of mind to detach from them unapologetically. It may not be easy but it's necessary for my own well being.

I could relate to this so very much. I spent my life until my mother died (I was in my 40's) "taking care" of her. She was a hypochondriac her whole life. Everything revolved around her so I lost myself in that and did not create my own boundaries or identity. THEN I enabled and "took care" of my sister and her 2 kids for 6 years in her alcoholism. 6 years of drama which tore up my life. THEN I finally did the right hard thing: I changed ME. I wrote my sister the hardest letter I'd ever written and said I am not enabling you anymore. I admitted I was as sick as her and that I was going to go get well. I did. It is a work in process. WE have to change US. This talk reminded me of that so very much. By the way, that's when my sister got sober (10 years + now). I take no credit for it. But when her resources were gone, SHE got well.

Lori, Thank you for sharing your story here. I "covered" for a younger brother for ages, even while overseas competing on National Team. One day, I had enough. I told him I loved him and always will yet I was not going to cover for him any longer. He got sober and has continued on his journey ever since. As you wrote (I take no credit for it.) Yet when my brother had few choices left and no one to be co-dependent with (as I was), he chose sobriety. Here is to your continued health and happiness. Thanks again. Aloha, Maggie

For everyone who gets hammered with manipulative lines like, "family is everything" or "but they're family" you can weigh that against this, if you choose: family is as family does. I try now to choose people who feel and behave like family. And I realize now that ALL good family is chosen family. No matter the blood relation.

Nowadays, almost every teaching including psychotherapy starts to become "more spiritual" especially from the rise of Eckhart Tolle. That's beautiful how these things come together slowly, more people start to observe what is inside and outside of them. They start to awake and heal :)

So many wonderful teachers out there. I do believe you have to do the work and once you get it you say, WOW I survived that and I’m OK. And than you become grateful that you actually had the experience and that you survived what seemed like the end of the world. When you become grateful and are detach from that emotion that had You locked up, how you couldn’t come out of your head that’s when you realize how amazing your life really is. When you can open your heart fully that is the path back to your soul.

I have been through much talk therapy and discovered I disassociate as a coping mechanism as well. Being in your 30s and trying to teach yourself how to manage your emotions can be so uncomfortable, I seemed to not recognize any emotion but anger at first.. but what i want to say is that i have found the experience has forced me to practice self compassion as well. I did not know at the beginning of all this I would be coming to a place of true self love because in order to do the work you must really learn to forgive yourself along the way. This episode is resonating so deeply with me, I almost want to forward it to my family so they can understand how hard its been to separate. Thank you both so much, and i want to give a special shout out to Lewis for introducing so many new people to my life who’s messages have become so important to me, and also for always seeming to ask the questions right as I’m thinking it! ♥️

I am Italian and I can relate with this SO MUCH. I live abroad since 7 years, but my brother (35) still living with mum and dad. Mum constantly complaining she is ill, her sisters super sick all the time. Calling home gives me anxiety because I know they will have depressing stuff to tell me. I normally can't resist more than a week at home with them. Church Mass on TV daily, constant lament and crying from my relatives... Most of my Italian friends in Italy still live with parents after passing 30 yo. I did a lot of work on myself to be independent, loving my family but taking some distance. I know a lot of habit I had of panicking and having huge crazy reactions was because my home environment. I can now control myself better...but it took a lot of work!

I noticed that with people who especially for men or young men they could end up getting stuck into a fight mode instead of flight mode. But once aware of these triggers, you can step away from your fight or flight mode, think about it, and decide how to response. Sometimes it doesn't take it cataclysmic event sometimes it's just awareness for your self preservation because your tired of something and need to make a change. I like what you're both are saying. It's making me reflective on so many things but in a positive way.

I think the most important thing I learned as I was taking care of myself mentally and physically the best I could was to allow people to make their own choices reap their own consequence in order for them to learn and not to take away that learning process because if you take it away then they just don't learn it and they will always be reliant on others instead of themselves mentally and physically.

And since Teal I have found countless people who have KZbin channels that are some way or another helping the whole! Grateful to everyone who puts themselves out in the web and helps others to find themselves in it. ❤️

I think one of the best methods of self healing is knowing when not only to take a break, but take a vacation. From all aspects of work, even if its only 1 week, I look back and I think if I just took a vacation instead of working harder and longer and powering through I probably would have done better for the rest of the year compared to how it ended up going.

Thank you so much for this. I too have had to separate myself from my family. The stress of being the family scapegoat got too much. It is a relief to know that there is someone out there who feels the same as me. I have always felt that I am a freak because of the way my parents made me feel. Everything that was wrong in their marriage was my fault. Even though my Mum is now dead, I have hate poured out on to me whenever I see any of my family. I even have my 10 year old nephew repeat back to me what an evil person I am.... Having heard the adults judge and criticise me behind my back....he repeats what he has heard.. much to my sisters embarrassment. Being totally alone and having to deal with these feelings on my own is hard, but it is still much easier than revisiting my family situation and having to relive that hell over and over again. I feel comforted to know there are people out there who understand. Thank you.

It’s interesting how a catastrophic life event can actually force you to modify or change things that probably should’ve been changed years prior. I lost my husband in 2013 to a terminal illness. Prior to that I always found certain components within the people in my family to be very draining, and negative. Prior to any kind of function, holiday or event I would always get very anxious and just push myself through it and be exhausted but relieved when it was over. After my husband died the grief was so huge and took up so much space and utilized so much energy that I was no longer able to do this. So at the middle-aged year of 48 I decided to make some modifications and set some boundaries so I was able to deal with them and work through my grief. After being married for 17 years and becoming a widow at 48 I had to find a whole new life and that was overwhelming and exhausting. There was just nothing left to channel into the pipeline of energy that they required. Well I started setting these boundaries and they didn’t like it! I was told I was “impossible” Through a lot of resources and life teachers and my bereavement support group I was able to shrug this off even though it was very difficult. I would have to shrug off this heavy coat almost every day so I didn’t cave-in to the guilt that I felt. It’s been seven years since my husband‘s death now and I can honestly say that I have kept my boundaries and if they want to see me great, I have no problem going to visit them. The boundaries are staying and I think they are finally realizing that. Whether they changed their opinion of me being “impossible “that’s up to them. I can honestly say without a twinge of anxiety - I no longer care. I love them but I no longer care what their opinion is. Self-care is not selfish. Self-care is vital and there are so many people in our society that if they don’t realize this they are going to eventually kill themselves with endless effort and waste their life catering to the manipulative behaviors of others. Great forum....thank you!

I can relate to this as well.. it was when I was grieving my last relationship that I ran out of energy to deal with all their crap. Some people only take and can't give. At that point it was impossible for me and I started putting the foot down. I had some honest conversations but nothing really changes if you don't enforce it.

@TheHolisticPsychologist Thank you, Dr Lepara! You have been a gigantic source of healing, understanding, and waking up to ourselves amongst myself and a circle of friends I am in community with, we are reading your books over and over again, dissecting and applying, as we are learning to be conscious and aware through the challenges and struggles of life. Thank you thank you thank you for the bottom of my heart for the work that you were doing! I am finding so much freedom and empowerment that I never knew possible ♥️

Thank you for having this woman on your show. Like many people, I have a lot of guilt about "saving" my family from their own bad choices. I have wasted years of my life and creative energy in order to comply with my childhood brainwashing that I had to do things for family, and then others, first. Religious pressures, family pressures, and society's pressures are difficult to overcome especially when there is punishment, sabtotage, or rejection involved, as there was in my case. So, it helps to hear of someone who had the courage to live their truth. She also chose to honor her own purpose in life. AWESOME! I am inspired to keep on trying. My life isn't over yet!

Thank you so much for speaking in a manner, asking the questions that I had, and a answering them in a way that I could understand/innerstand. My subconscious has been formed over 64 years of physical and mental torture. Enough is Enough!!! Even with a loving therapist that really doesn't understand the big picture, I was sure I wouldn't live long enough to even have a innerstanding of how to change till now.

It never ceases to amaze me that interviews like this pop up when I need to hear them the most. I've been separated from my family for close to 20 years now, and no it hasn't been easy at all. But the best thing I've ever done for myself. My mother and I now write letters, I don't take her calls, she always manages to throw that dagger in and I'm left wounded and obsessing again. I don't talk to my two sisters at all, nor do I care to. Years and years and more years of therapy barely put a bandaid on my big T, it wasn't until I had a Theta Healing session with a local healer that my life truly started to turn around. I'm not dismissing any of the therapists, social workers, psychologists that I saw throughout my life, a few of them did make a difference. Theta healing was my breakthrough. Thank you Lewis Howes for bringing these interviews to all of us, love them.

I’m in this process of some kind of evolution. I’m learning more and more where all my patterns and thoughts belong and where my reactions come from, who taught them to me. I have realised that I have experience so much pain, lack of saftey and sheer terror throughout my childhood that it has had a profound impact on the development of my nervous system. I have gotten to the point where I understand why I am who I am and working on becoming a better more secure version of myself every day

Listening to this the second time after all these years, and the thing that stood out this time, is memory impairment. I've been wanting to heal traumas, but somehow don't know what to heal, I barely remember anything before the age of 18 or so. I love Dr. Nicole's Instagram profile. Started following her after this video was aired. She is such a wonderful guiding light to so many like me. Love you both. Learning to have family boundaries to all new level. It is crazy how it feels as if Dr. Nicole talks of my family.

Great discussion you two! In field of Mind/body healing, talk therapy does not work as the unconscious mind does not know the difference between what is real, as in happening now and what happened in past, meaning the body biochemically reacts the same. When you talk about past trauma, the unconscious mind responds as though it were still happening. This is why so many people feel stuck. The only way truly through it, is to clear it. You can't erase past yet you can clear past emotional trauma so that you still have memory yet the emotional charge is gone. That is true healing. What Dr.LePera states about breath work and gut health is huge! Keep on keeping on with the great work. Aloha, Maggie

Amazing amazing podcast! I will say Meditation does help heal the nervous system and help heal the stress in the body from past trauma. Emily Fletcher's book is amazing Stress Less Accomplish more (recommend getting it on audible) She has a great interview with Tom Bilyeu and Aubrey Marcus going deeper into the science behind it all. She also has a great masterclass with Mindvalley. But I truly recommend the right meditation as the foundation to being able to really start healing from the stress we carry, and then of course there are other beautiful tools like Dr. Lepera talks about in this podcast.

Thanks for being so vulnerable and sharing about family. In my opinion it is a topic that would benefit many if it is spoken about more openly. I too cut communication with my family for some time. It was a long hard painful decision to make and after some time we are talking again but its limited contact because we live in different countries and one of the last gatherings was full of conflicts and drama so my wanting to connect is limited.

I love the stress bucket concept. : ) The chaotic, stressful thoughts that arise need to be let go of, simply let go of the thought or emotion. Then the natural state of our divine being can fill the space we've cleared. Yes, it's a great daily practice, it works if you do the practice every moment of every day for the rest of your life. The negative in our mind is not infinite, progress is made and the changes are remarkable. Surrender and awareness get rid of all the garbage we have stored in there. This practice is described clearly in the interview on Vimeo with Michael Singer and Tony and Sage Robbins. Let that S%!T GO!! xo Thanks Dr N xo

Gosh, I can’t imagine not remembering. I remember *everything*, not so much that I can do the calendar date thing, but I definitely could go year by year and retrieve very vivid memories. My earliest memories is before I was three. I actually think over remembering is kind of stressful. Writing my story and then editing out minor details has been a helpful practice for me to learn to let go.

This is so good. It Occurred to me that when you said boundaries and people in relationship try to manipulate and demean you and say whatever they can say to get you back into the way things were, is really a fear of losing relationship. At our core we all need to know that we are valuable and lovable unconditionally. I’m not saying don’t set boundaries they are absolutely necessary. I’ve always been concerned about the fear of retaliation of what that would look like, but I realize on their end the fear of losing relationship is what drives them to behave poorly. When really what we all need is a new way to interact with one another that’s based on maturity rather than an immaturity

I love what you just said practice it gives you the gives you the feeling of control when you pass practice how to interact with people in a positive way it's a positive thing. When people turn to outside sources ,drugs, drink to calm their nerves to help them cope through their emotions that's a negative thing because it doesn't truly address anything and it muddles their thinking to compound the issues in a negative way.

Afteristening to the last interview, I had to find this one. Thank you for speaking openly about distancing from family. I just saw my father after 4 years. I put a boundary that was crossed and chose to eliminate that part of my life. I took alot of crap for my decision but did what I needed for myself! He's very ill so I saw him to see if I needed closure. I still feel okay with my decision.
