This is clearest demonstration I’ve heard. Another big KZbinr’s audio made this microphone sound over done in the low end & underwhelming. This just goes to show you can’t trust samples from streaming platforms. Who knows what’s going on in signal chain for starters. Is the LCT940 the same except for the controller?

Lewitt has had a brutal growth lately. I met this brand about 3 years ago and I thought it was novel, but I would not pay that amount of money for its sound. There are microphones that sound the same or better than this and that are more achievable. This is the case of the AKG p820 microphone by tube, it costs much less and sounds spectacular. The other cheap tube mic with a good sound is the MXL revelation 2. Either way the innovation of lewitt is appreciated and its products are interesting, but hey, it's just my opinion and personal taste. Best regards!.

nobody needs a mic in that pricerange to create a great sounding song - it's important to know that. However for the few people who really need that additional 0,5% it's probably worth it - and be it just for the feel. Artists sing into that kind of mic differently, just as you play a 10 000 Buck violin differently than the 120 Buck one. Humans are funny beings. However, generally speaking, with mics it's usually about the voice and the song. The best mic will not work with every voice and every song. So it's far more important to have a couple of options, than having "one mic to rule them all" - but that's just my opinion (that many people share).
@PresentDayProduction
@PresentDayProduction 2 жыл бұрын
I agree Gerhard - if the song is rubbish, NO mic will fix that! But as you said, this is the final 0.5% and it’s for those who really want that final polish on their recordings. It is a great mic nonetheless, and there are other great mics for less money - the LEWITT LCT 640 TS is fantastic and comes in at £700. It’s horses for courses and there’s something in the LEWITT range for every price point
@castleman170

@@akagerhard I agree, everyone is free to acquire it or not, but I would not buy it because it is not my priority. I know that for each voice or instrument a type of microphone must be occupied, but I only speak in this specific context, because I can get very good results with other cheaper ones (it is not a criticism of this channel, nor the microphone). Of course if they gave it to me, I would be delighted to receive it. On the other hand, whoever knows how to optimize and occupy in a good way all the available sound resources, will always have good results. I have met many people who have high quality microphones and expensive equipment, but they do not sound with the same quality of their equipment because they do not know how to occupy them, nor do they know how to get the most out of it. It's all in the skill, experience, knowledge and good ear to get good quality results, otherwise there will be no microphone to fix those productions.

@Wayne Brown of course. Although, a starving artist with just enough dough for one or two really nice pieces of gear to connect to a laptop might really be able to get some serious work done at level with that kind of option which they could then pop into a road case and take it with them to get work done in other studios, hotel rooms or in a clothes closet. Just trying to imagine some versatile real-world scenarios

Good review, and I understand the general enthusiasm this LCT-1040 is getting. Still, I think the “less-discovered “sweet-spot” for most producers is Lewitt’s fine LCT-940. I’d really love to see more videos focusing on the (arguably similar) great performing, versatile, and more affordable LCT-940!

It does seem expensive (especially from Lewitt), but when you compare it to a U47 at $5500+ and then factor in all the variables with it, then not so much. We need some KZbinr to shoot it out with other mics in a variety of situations. Especially vocals. Warren Huart will probably do one eventually. Lewitt usually send them stuff to fiddle with.........Edit...Lol, He already has, I've not watched it yet though.

Ok, it certainly is a beautiful thoughtful modern design. But I see nothing mentioned about the capsule design whatsoever. All the focus is on the looks and tweaks. Where is the capsule made? How did they go about design and selection? Does the lineup use the same capsule except the 240? What is the default sound profile for the 840 & 940 compared to the 1040? Is one closer to the clear setting or saturated? This would help when choosing, if you only need one setting and don’t want to spend $3,500 for the flagship model.

Hmm, as I see this mic has gone out to all the major YT audio channels (BTW congratulations, you... made it? ;)) and more importantly as here, too, I'm hearing the same I hear elsewhere in all the audio examples of it, I'll copy/paste almost in its entirety my comment I wrote on the Pro...Like A Pro channel. Here goes: It's a brilliant microphone, but comes with 3 "BUTs". The good: -it's REALLY versatile -it's definitely innovative, also takes & expands some pretty genius Lewitt tricks, like the interchangeable front/back from their 441 Flex and the tube/fet blend from their 940 -it sounds very good -it's built like a tank, as most Lewitt stuff is, often surprisingly so, for the price -it has that Lewitt shockmount, probably the best in the world along with Rycote -and I'll add here that the detachable, sturdy and simply XLR connectable remote for control room use is absolutely brilliant. BUT: -it still has that distinctive Lewitt "zing" to it, that hyperactive high frequency peaky push, not in the cheap modern mic harsh sibilance area, but way high above, in the 11KHz-13kHz area - you can clearly hear it on the acoustic guitar, and most clearly on the S, and even more so on the T, K sounds and in the breathy air in between parts of both the spoken and the sung vocals. It's there regardless of the setting, it only gets subdued or darkened with the mic's darker settings, but it's clearly still there to begin with. It must be a capsule signature or a Lewitt sonic design & taste choice thing, as it's present on most Lewitt large diaphragm condensers, I've regularly encountered it, and sometimes have had to counter it with eq or pick another mic it if bright acoustics or bright cymbals or sibilant voices were involved. If & when that will be out of the way, it will be a truly GREAT mic. -with all that versatility and choices, comes the risk of endless noodling and decision paralysis - imagine making a vocalist or a guitarist in the studio go through all or just several of those possible settings combinations & permutations to be sure you're making the right choice before committing to tape or DAW. Can't always record multiple takes of everything or multiple reamped DIs of everything. So, you have to know what you want and have an extremely clear sonic vision of how you want the recording you're gradually building and the final mix to sound. And that takes good ears, and even better experience. Alas, today, less and less people have that, while more and more people have or build recording "studios", often spending pretty big budgets to get the latest tool, the latest status symbol, the latest plugin, the latest fad. -it costs approx 3500 EUR. That's approx 2000 more than the 940, which was their flagship up to now. A bit too big of a jump, and already into big name iconic territory (you can get an upper tier Neumann for that kind of money, and if you have that kind of money and that kind of studio, guess which name attracts more clients - because that counts, too). All of the above in my opinion & experience, of course. Enjoy.
@PresentDayProduction
@PresentDayProduction 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your great comment. The one point I’d choose to disagree with is the “paralysed by decision” one. Although it is indeed true that sometimes you can have too much choice, we have found that if you just set the circuit dial to 100% “Tube”, then obviously you get that out of the mix output and you get 100% FET from the FET output. This gives maximum flexibility in postproduction, and normally what we have found in our recording so far is that just having BOTH outputs in parallel seems to sound best, so really it takes seconds to set up because there’s really not much to do as it sounds incredible from the start! You are not wrong though, I do agree that sometimes there can be too much choice and that can be distracting from the main task, however I would say that this particular microphone might not be an example of that situation!

@@PresentDayProduction Thanks for your reply... Agree - that one is, indeed, a possible very good use of one of that mic's many features. And, as I was saying, it implies that the user is at a pretty advanced, "I-really-know-what-I-want-and-what-I'm-doing level, as you guys most certainly are.

Looks like a great microphone. Appreciate the disclaimer that it's not paid at the beginning. I think mentioning the price (~3500 Bucks) is very important and I would have said that at the beginning, after you presented the interior of "the case". I didn't care so much about the "Lewitt-History" - but I guess that's just me. "Form follows function" is a very basic thing in design by the way.. you hear it over and over again if you study something like "industrial design" (I didn't but I had friends that did).

Thanks for your comment Gerhard - I do understand form follows function is a basic thing in design - I actually studied product design myself! To bring so much innovation paired with excellent quality to such a saturated industry is not only bold but also a difficult move, but Lewitt somehow does it so successfully. That’s actually in a video we put out only a few days ago - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWmsdIB5ot6hgZo - but it’s also coming in a FREE mastering course coming soon! The short answer is, yes, we provide files for different formats.

Great video. You've really sold it to me.. if only I had £3000 to spend (or there abouts!). I do, however, have £1000 to spend and I'm looking for a versatile microphone to record vocals, guitar and bass. I have a Prism Titan interface and I was thinking of getting an API 512C preamp and either an SM7B or a Roswell K87 mini. Should I just spend more on a better microphone and go clean into the AD? I like tubes and I like vintage but I need versatile. Any advice would be massively appreciated 🙏 👍🏻

LEWITT LCT 640 TS is about £700, and was - up until the 1040 - our favourite mic of all time for recording vocals. The SM7B, in our opinion, is a bit overrated. I’d personally say spend more on the mic - if you want versatile the LCT 640 TS is as good as they come. You can even adjust the polar pattern in post

Great review! A couple years ago i had a UA-710 preamp, and I felt that when using mixing tube between solid-state circuit there was a bit of phase misaligned. Not sure was it a design problem or not.

4,000 hours of 3D printing time..? Does that mean they only managed to create one example..? I see Mark is blowing someone else’s trumpet into a Lewitt this time... though, this doesn’t sound as thin (on KZbin) as some other Lewitts... so that’s okay... and the Behringer version will probably be a bit cheaper. Bit late responding today... but that’s what you get for posting a video on Wednesday afternoon, around Sonic Talk time... and who is Stan Dwacking..?

@@valerie98 That's what they said about their Moog ripoffs. A few of their synths actually sound better than the originals, and more reliable to boot. Not withholding their manufacturing is in china with questionable ethics...

@@PresentDayProduction That’s okay, chaps... I blame Lewitt... back five years ago (or whenever) they probably delayed the mic’s launch deliberately... i) to ensure my personal viewing schedule would be disrupted, at some future point... and b) so they could build enough of them to give away to all the other reviewers (seemingly).

Uuuuh, that's a nice piece of hardware. It seems that Vienna became the home of microphone inventions again, after AKG left. Lewitt and Austrian Audio really made an entry, while being still young companies. I'm a sucker for nice nice mics as most people in audio production are, but in most cases I just forget about it, because I'm quite pleased with what I own. This thing really offers something fresh and vintage at the same time. The versatility really calls for playing with it. Being a "poor musician", this isn't something I could afford, without saving up for quite some time. I do not think, it's overpriced, even if produced in china, like all the other Lewitt mics, since the development was clearly elaborate. I wish you could keep it, but on the other hand, as you said, not being paid with a new shiny mic, makes an honest review easier. But I wouldn't like to send it back either. Thanks for trying and going through all the pain losing it again :).
