7:12 Those types of cases are great!! Harbor Freight sells them for around $40 and you can pluck out the bits of foam you don't need and create your own customized mic case. They're called Apache cases. I was genuinely surprised by how rugged they are.

Thank you for this video, introducing the Pure Tube. Let me note that the role of the active component in a condenser mic (in most cases a FET and sometimes a tube) is not really amplifying the signal but to implement an impedance converter which is needed because the impedance of the condenser transducer is extremely high and it cannot drive the cable connecting the mic to the mic preamp and a lower output impedance is needed to push the signal (the output voltage) through the microphone cable. Actually, the signal voltage of a condenser element is usually higher than that of a dynamic transducer.

I'm a big Soyuz fan and own all their mics in FET versions. I was really interested in the Pure Tube but listening to this video, I really found it extremely close to the 17 FET, so I'm really pleased I can stick with my Soyuz mics.The 17 FET is a lot more expensive now than when I purchased it a while ago so with the current price difference, I'd probably get the Lewitt but many thanks, this was a cool video.

Mike, your comment about saving up for the 540 and then seeing the pure tube is 1000% me I feel so seen! After your demonstration I feel like I can grab the 540 while it’s on sale for about $500. I currently use a 440 so I’m definitely a Lewitt guy. I am absolutely drooling over the pure tube, but I am now seeing it as a luxury. It’s still on my list, but not as functional for me as the 540 will be. Thanks again for the fabulous comparisons.

Mike, it seems to me that the most meaningful test you can perform when you have two mics in front of you is to read a short, strategically-selected passage and then A/B the mics on that performance, playing back one short section at a time in sequence. This would really help us pick out the differences. Your usual method of cutting between mic A and B as you speak is fine, but unless the differences between two mics are drastic it is easier to miss out on some of the nuances.

Hey Mike. Thanks for this review. I have to say this mic sounds really sweet. Your voice seems similar to mine, so I wonder how I'd sound using it. I might have to get one of these to try out. Question: Do you prefer to leave the mic turned on to keep the tube warm all the time? I worked at a television facility years ago that had an AKG "The Tube" mic that I did some voice overs on. Wow... it made even me sound good. They left it on all the time; the tube never cooled down. They claimed it was better for the tube to be left on. Your thoughts?

Great demo!! I was considering the Lewitt pure tube vs the Lauten Atlantis vs a tlm103 vs tf51 from telefunken. I ended up going with the Atlantis and so far I’m extremely happy with it! The primary reason I chose the Atlantis was due to its flexibility in “voicings” and polar patterns. However, I will likely still invest in a pure tube in a few months times, because they sound so great and I don’t have a tube mic in my collection. Thanks again for this vid!

I'm surprised that Lewitt and Austrian Audio have yet to come out with high end broadcast microphone. Wouldn't it be nice to have an end address Pure Tube in broadcast style microphone chassis with off axis rejection like the Lauten Audio LS-208.
@tvelektron
@tvelektron Жыл бұрын
I think this is because the market for those kind of microphone is very small. Moreover here in europe a lot of classic side adress mics are used in broadcast as well as high end small diaphragm mics like schoeps...
@Slipsch
@Slipsch Жыл бұрын
@@tvelektron You might be right, but I also think that, one studio typically need 1 type of mic each, not counting instrument mic, but a single podcast, typically has multiple mic, minimally 2. And there's more podcast than studio worldwide. But that's my 2 cents. There's nothing wrong with what's available now, with the Ethos, LS-208, SV33, BCM 104, BCM705, SM7B, RE20, Rode Procaster but it's getting boring.

Nice review, thanks. Not directly related to this video, but it does trigger a question that I know you have the microphones to answer...I have the Lewitt LCT 440 Pure, which I bought as a learning experiment on using Condenser mics (vs. the SM7B that I had been using prior to that)...I wanted something a little less dark, but wanted to make sure my environment (which is not "Booth standard") was ok enough that a condenser wouldn't be too much trouble before I put down enough cash for a "serious" condenser. Now I like the 440 a lot, more than I expected in fact, but obviously I wonder if the 540 S would be worth the "upgrade" or if I should just stick where I am...I have never seen anyone put the 440 side by side with the 540 and I know you have both...any chance you could do that for us? Anyway, love your videos and they've all be very helpful in my path to a little more knowledge. Thanks!

To my ears the only thing I notice about the pure tube is that it has a lot less high, it sounds like you're talking through a piece of cloth comopared to the other non-tube mics. But this has always been the case for tubes; people like them because they have basically a much worse frequency response that for many people just sounds more pleasant. Same wuthb Vynil records; the sound quality is objectively worse but for many people it's more pleasing. I'm not sure if using a mic that colours your voice is what you want for voiceover work, wouldn't the overall sound be more or less dictated by the what the customer needs the record for?
