He was probably a stray but there is a possibility that he was a friendly feral... they do exist. Regardless of his past, he is now a very loved and pampered pet 😻
@jenniferloftus23635 жыл бұрын
Yep, don't forget they are very similar to their wild ancestors over in the Middle East and Africa. They just came over and domesticated themselves in hopes of eating all the rodents who came for our grains. Then they stayed for the company, I think. That had to be a cat like Cinnabon, so it's like a nice circle in a grand way. Here is a cat, deciding to break a really large gulf to check a person out when he could have just eat and run and yet he stayed for the company.
@l21n185 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Loftus It took a lot of patience on Lex’s part as well I believe to show Cinnabon that he was friendly and Cinnabon was safe in his presence.
@jenniferloftus23635 жыл бұрын
@@l21n18 Oh definitely. I always assume the cats assume we're going to eat them, and I always assume they might rip my eyes out if I go too fast, lol. It does take a lot of patience on the human side, without a doubt. I have enjoyed seeing Lex become a cat's person, the whole thing is heartwarming but I know it took a lot of work. The payoff is surely in those meows and head bumps.
@CountessChuchoteur5 жыл бұрын
There's a little colony where I work and one of the kittens from the newest litter is so friendly, you never would've guessed he's a wild cat.
@jenniferloftus23635 жыл бұрын
@@kylewilson9591 Well, you could say that, but they had to have that first leap. Many researchers in the area of domestication believe they were attracted to our rodent infestations that occurred due to grain storage capabilities we developed along with papyrus. Egypt was worshipping them because of their fertility but also they were revered for pest control. Those cats in the Middle East and Africa came from the desert. They are still there, and actually need protection in some cases because the cats we currently consider "domestic cats" are so successful. Domestication takes many generations to happen, but it's incredibly interesting and involves among other things, physical changes based on various hormones and othet biologocal processes. Take pigs, for example. Currently the US South os experiencing an explosion in feral hogs. They're smart enough that they break domestic pigs out to join the gang and in other cases the pigs get out on their own. Within a remarkably short period those pigs go through physical changes like growing gigantic scary tusks, rougher hair and skin and all together more aggressive behavior. Their heads change. Many of these physical changes correspond with domestication and wild or feral traits. Dogs have rounder skulls than wolves, lesser intelligence, more facial muscles (to help make big doggie eyes at you) and other less fun to discuss things involving thyroids. We learned a ton of this through a decades long project in the former Soviet Union (Lex might have been aware of this with his spare bedroom and collections lol) that sought to domesticate foxes. They just kept breeding the more social or friendly foxes from a population of fur producing animals. As the generations went on, the foxes who were selected for "friendliness" exhibited physical traits that are similar across all domesticated species. Rounder head, less fear of humans/lower startle reflexes, reduced intelligence and other traits. Oh, and colors. The foxes now have many more color options than they had while "wild". All of this is simplistic and many other things contributed to our current cat buddies, including of course, humans letting them back out into the wild. But many people think cats and maybe even dogs in the beginning, domesticated themselves to some degree at first. Dogs came to our campfires and ate scraps and stayed for the company. They were great alarm systems and we started breeding them for specific jobs over many tens of thousands of years. Cats were hanging around us because we learned to farm and store grain and also kept papyrus and later paper which rodents love. That's a feeding opportunity and now here we are. So yes, I was dabbling in allegory when I said they came for our infestations and stayed for the company, and one individual made the leap. Many individuals over time made the leap, and eventually we have Cinnabon who might not have had a very long life without Lex but would at least have successfully passed on his red cat genetics to several litters of kittens. He could've survived on what he caught in the woods. You're not wrong in what you said. Edit: I want to be clear that not all animals will do what the hogs do when they get out. Your dog won't become a wolf after a few weeks if he gets out and runs away. The hogs are, I think, unique in that they change so quickly. Some people say domestic cats change a bit if they escape or get lost but I think that might be just due to fur getting thicker or thinner due to weather conditions. The hogs, though, go through an amazing change that is measurable when they escape.

He was frightened enough to be considered feral and not adoptable so his situation was pretty dire. You built his trust and saved him so I don’t think it matters if he was feral or semi-feral. He probably had some contact with humans as a kitten but he wasn’t there long as he was trapped, neutered and released. And starving to death. So skinny and scared, those pictures are quite shocking. Now he’s completely bonded to you. I hear ginger cats are particularly loyal. He’s very lucky you took the time to win him over.

Even if he was feral, this is still very possible. We’ve rescued 7 kittens that were feral. One of them you couldn’t even look at when you put the food down. Now he’s incredibly happy and loves to cuddle on your lap. The other three we found as smaller babies and it still took time but now they love the attention. They’ll meow and cry until they get their pets and love. The last 3, we found as very baby kittens, probably only 7-8 weeks old roughly. They were scared at first, but grew to love people and when they were old enough we found them their forever homes where they are loving life and loving attention from people.

I noticed one day that she was really gaining weight and wondered if she was pregnant. I didn't see her for a few weeks until she showed up with 3 kittens in tow. One black, one white and one that looks identical to Cinnabon. So, now I was feeding a family. Watching them interact I noticed the yellow kitten was the most dominant while eating, and thought he's going to take over, and that he did. My patio belongs to Peanut now. I almost teared up!! I don't know why. I just love your interactions with Cinnabon. You're a good man with a kind heart. And you have a great instinct to know what to do gain the trust of a cat. Most cats just need to do things on their terms and that includes giving their trust. Thank you for being a good human pet for Cinnabon. Here's wishing you a super belated Feral Cat Day and an early Merry Christmas. Give Cinnabon an extra scratch behind the ear for me.

He pretty much lives the same life that my cat does. In when he wants, out when he wants, carried around if he wants, saved from other cats, dry & wet cat food, treats. We also have 3 strays outside, but our Maine Coon cat Billy is the king of all the neighborhood cats. 😻
