Great showcase of the template! The way to get around having individual reverbs when printing stems is to create reverb auxes for each group. For example, if you want to have full control of strings stem with their individual reverb, use an aux and route its output to strings stem - good idea to test it is add an excessive amount of reverb via send and then bring strings stem fader all the way down to see if strings reverb is actually applied within the stem. I would do the same for short and longs, for each orchestral family so basically woodwinds, brass and strings would have 2 reverbs each (short and long) routed into their main stem groups. Since you are using mastering processing for the whole track, each exported stem will behave differently because of compression/limiting. For example, exporting strings stems only when you are hitting mastering compressor with brass, woodwinds and percussion will have a different sounding stem as opposed when strings are in solo hitting mastering compression. The way around this is to use mastering processing for each stem and leave MIX OP for monitoring/metering purposes only. That's a lot more processing if your computer can handle it but it offers a lot more flexibility when delivering!

You can play sample modeling horns polyphonically if you use a Kontakt multiscript called JM Multidivisi. You load up your three horns and the multiscript and you're good to go.

Id love to see a deeper dive on the effects, eq and routing. Setting my template up and wanting to get the sound as balanced and placed as possible within the template. Be good to see the effects/eq plugins chain flow from individual instruments all the way to the out bus. You mention your three reverbs too. I have found a way to get a better sound with SM trumpets (and other brass) cutting some (2) of the high resonances. I have also noticed that applying the same trick to the other instruments (strings and wind) I get a better general definition and clarity.

-60ms Track Delay on CSS, Works like a charm. Read somewhere they have a delay of 60ms. But you can try and land onto something close to -60ms

Hey Mattia. Great video. Some really nice sounding libraries here. I did notice something that i feel you could maybe improve on in the future. Your EQ in particular. i want to say forst that youve got a really great sound, but i think your EQ choices probably hold back your individual layers, as some did sound better without EQ. your mid range is great, it sounds like you really know what you re doing, its more the high and low end in particular which you are probably causing a few issues mix wise. illl give examples. at 11:50 you are adding around 5/10db at 60 hz to french horns and then cutting the low mids. Cutting the low mids is probably a good shout in a dense mix, but french horns don't really go as low as 60 hz consistently and 60 hz is typically where the fundamental for low percussion instruments sit. so adding that amount ow low and sub energy at that particular frequency range is going to make the french horns low end mask the sub energy from things like kick drums, bass drums, Timps etc. You may find that taking out the sub information with a high pass to around 80 hz, boosting around 120hz and cutting around 400 hz will give you a better result and also help the horns stay out of the way of the percussion and other low instruments as they are more of a mid to low mid range instrument anyways. :) with regards to the high end, you say you have issues with getting hiss from boosting the top end. i would suggest maybe not using a shelf on the high end with strings (I think it was strings you said you were having issues with right? :) ). instead you can cut around 2.5/3.2khz by around 2/5db which will get rid of some of the harsher harmonics and boost c4k (ish) with a fairly narrow cue. That will help them cut through without accentuating the hiss at all. :) If you boost anything above those frequencies you will just amplify the bow noise which is where you are getting the hiss from. These are a few things that i've picked up from mixing countless tracks over the years. i hope they help you, really enjoy your template walkthroughs! i should really focus on making more stuff like this myself, though im usually pretty busy working myself aha. Thanks for being an inspiration within the industry.

My two favorite days of the year are Christmas and the day you release your Template video! I noticed you seem to treat shorts and longs with the same EQ and reverb. Is that for ease of writing? Do you work with articulation sets or keyswitches?

My part writing often involves constant articulation switching and it would be very impractical to go back to one articulation per track. The reverb I use here has such a minimal effect on the overall sound that I see very little in using a different one for shorts

The headphones I use now are Beyerdynamic 1990. For me to consider using a different string library would have to be either doing something fundamentally different or sound objectively better than what I have now. I like the sound of this template and the overall workflow, and I don’t plan on making any drastic changes

Thanks for this great video. I have a MacBook with the same specs but whenever I work with such a template I get a "system overload" warning (I use a high buffer size and purge the sounds in the kontact. Also all the sounds are on external ssd). Do you also get this warning sometimes? (I usually use "freeze" or "bounce in place" as a solution, but I would like to work with your method).

I don’t get system overload because the tracks are loaded gradually while working on a project. The empty track at start has all of the tracks disarmed and no impact on memory. The demo for this template must have had only 150 tracks armed at max

Yeah I still use faders for strings. I never use the breath controller simultaneously with faders though, I find the breath controller alone hard enough. I’m new to it and I’m still learning, it’ll be long before it becomes second nature

You can use both in your DAW but there is not a possibility to change automaticaly. So I have to do it manually for each track (and when you have more than 300 tracks 😪...). Mattia, great videos as always. Im considering Cinematic Studio Strings, Brass and Woods. However i have BBC, Musio, Hollywood orchestra and can not hear a difference with samples of Cinematic Studios as opposed to cinestrings and Hollywood. Or should I scrap that idea snd invest in Pacific? Or do nothing as I gave all i need. I am a hobbyist.

Cinesamples are your best option if you are going for a John Williams / large Hollywood type sound. CSS/CSB are great when they are soloed, but in a full mix they can take too much space while still sounding narrow, and make the mix messy. That's because of the way they were recorded, kind of a weird microphone setup. Microphones are too close in general, and nice sounding hall doesn't help (but it's not as bad as it may seem from my description). Great consistency though, great legatos and decent amount of articulations. PS libs are closer to Cinesamples, but more wet. Great playability, modern approach. I use and layer all of them.

I don’t but I just use the stuff you see me using in this video. Cinematic studio series, cinperc, cineharps, cinestrings runs, Hollywoodwinds, Albion 1 legacy, angry brass pro and soloists, caspian brass, sample modeling brass, pacific strings, vista, strezof choir essentials, Oceania 2, Bernard herrmann composer toolkit. Jezz looks like a lot when it’s listed like this 😅 realistically though I could do make do with just cinematic studio series like I had for a long time. If you watch the video you can see in detail what use, particularly all of the minor add ons.

I want to gradually start bringing Kontakt 7 into the template, at the moment I only use it for Pacific strings. I doesn't bother me that it doesn't have multi/articulations but if it did I would probably be more inclined to use more patches other than legato.

I’m new to libraries and I Simple got Opus Edition because of sale. But I saw where you are using MacBook Pro M1 Max. I’m kind of confused with MacBook and getting Mac Studio. Why do you have the MacBook?

Well for starter the MacBook is a laptop and the Studio isn’t. They’ve got completely different specs depending on how you build it. It depends on what you need.

I really love the CSS legato. It's the best damn legato I've ever heard. But then I got Pacific Ensemble Strings and Vista... To be honest, the legatos are not as good as CSS but where Vista and Pacific shine is the liveliness. They sound like real strings... No other library can do this. That's the advantage of Performance Sampling... CSS on its own sounds lovely and you may be extremely happy with it... And when you play Vista or Pacific side by side you'll realize how static the sustain notes in CSS are. The same feeling I got when I heard the Abbey Road Violins and Cellos.. The legato is top notch but the samples sound dead... Especially in contrast to Pacific and Vista.

I see that you almost completely abandoned BBC for the strings sound, did you just prefer the workflow of CSS better?

Yeah it took me a bit of trial and error but I finally found an overall sound and workflow that fits me well. I still like BBC though

Every time I watch music bloggers show off their templates, there's one thing I can't figure out. The templates contain more than 30 tools, various libraries and plugins. In my case, I load CSS or Spitfire Studio and already at about the tenth tool disk is 100%, everything slows down and falls off. The libraries are located on the ssd, and in cubase they are output via midi channels. What's wrong?

I’m sorry if this came across as a show off, please know it wasn’t at all my intent. Maybe you’re new to the channel but this video has become a yearly tradition for my viewers. It’s quite literally the only occasion when I let myself cover this type of content that is otherwise so popular in my niche. Anyways, let me see if I can help you. I don’t know about Cubase but the way this template is set up is just so that everything at start is disarmed and it has practically no impact on RAM. Tracks get loaded gradually the more you progress into a project. The demo you saw at the beginning must have had only 150 tracks armed at max. Also purging samples within kontakt helps too because it loads in memory only samples that you’re actually using.

Personally I can say that, working with an older computer, resource limitations can often hinder your music production workflow. One effective strategy I've found to overcome these limitations is to move away from the traditional "big orchestral template" and instead focus on creating smaller, genre/mood/project-specific templates. These ones contain a more curated selection of instruments tailored to the specific project or musical style. In this way, you can significantly reduce the CPU, RAM, and SSD usage allowing to work faster and more efficiently and also incorporating more post-processing tools saving you time and effort in the mixing stage.
