I put the Dobinson's suspension on mine too. Honestly, your video is my inspiration for what I want to do to mine. I have 275 tires, stock rims, and dobinsons lift. I want to get the roof rack next. I just have not had the time to look into it. I appreciate setting the great example of a stealth GX Beast.

I've been debating on a 200series/LX or a GX and this video pushed me a bit closer to a GX. Super clean but burly esthetic with tons of functionality!

I’ve had an LX in the past and looked at both this time around. Regardless of price, the GX is smaller in dimensions. Some of the trails I ride would give the LX a hard time because of how wide it is. But you trade off space, luxury, ride and even some off road options. Pros and cons for both so it depends on what you’ll use it for. This is my 2nd GX so you can tell which works better for me! :D

Wow! Nice job, and thanks so much for the detailed share. I love that bumper. I plan to do less mods with even more (or less) stealth theme. Likely no lift, roof rack, mounted radios, light bars... I feel like I can still do most everything with proper skids, rails approach angle and tire upgrade. Revisiting this video a second time- with a question: how critical is the Dobinson lift to your build out? Could you have gone a non-lifted route and had similar results? Really like your take on the build that fits your weekend objectives. I'm new to Overlanding so would like your take on which tire/wheel combination would be best without sacrificing too much highway comfort, and not have to chop huge chunks of the wheel liner to fit larger wheels. If I stick with my stock wheels ('19 GX Premium trim), what would be the largest tire size you recommend. Also, would getting larger tires require suspension swap/upgrade? Thanks!

Wheels/tires depend on style, intended use, budget, size, etc so really a personal decision. I will say that my Falken Wildpeak 265/65/18 do not rub (combined with my 1.5" lift) and are the largest tires I've found that fit in the spare tire location. Keep in mind that even in the same tire size the actual diameter can very so be sure to check the actual diameter size on whatever tire size you choose. I would also encourage you to stay away fro spacers if you plan to do any real offroading - they will become the weak link in your setup. You can probably fit that tire size without a suspension lift - and certainly you don't have to have a suspension upgrade to be able to overland. The GX is quite capable on it's own. If you find yourself needing more clearance then you can start thinking about a lift. I would encourage you to do some lite adventuring first to get used it and develop an opinion of what you might want from your rig - then design your overland setup accordingly.

Beautiful, this is how I envision my GX 2017 , someday . In Canada it’s very hard to find parts , shops esp for GX . I’ve worked on my 89 pathfinder and others but a bit nervous working on mines. ( I have have stealth the wife loves it as it is now ;). Thinking lift and tires first . I do have air bags though . I have seen that it is possible to keep them . Still researching . But expertly done .

Thanks man! I did everything myself and it was the first time for me - so if a newb can do it I'm sure you won't have any trouble. Only thing I had to get help with was getting the rear springs out. I had air bags on my first GX (2006) and of course the failed and it cost me $800 per to fix. I think they are much cheaper now to replace but they can still fail and they make installing a lift much more difficult. They also don't articulate down well. Based on my research, I would recommend getting a suspension lift with air bag delete and then install something like an Air Lift adjustable bag system. Good luck!!

I haven’t really noticed any road noise (slow or fast speeds). Been very pleased with them! On the tire size did you mean 265/65/18? If so - then yes I would think it would fit but can’t confirm 100%.

I recently bought a '17 GX and I'm outfitting it with similar gear. I haven't purchased rock sliders yet and would appreciate your thoughts on your Metaltech sliders. How long have you had them? Any comments or thoughts on those vs other GX options? Would you use those again if you were doing it over? Anything you don't like about them? Thanks for the videos. Very helpful. Great looking GX!

I would get them again. I prefer the kickouts since its a longer vehicle- can help save those rear tires in rocky situations. I’ve never had to lift the vehicle using them (like via a high lift jack) so can’t speak to their weight bearing ability. Powder coat has held up close to two years. Definitely recommend!

Thanks! You can find videos on KZbin of how to take the back console panel off, but basically it pops off, you drill a hole using a step bit, install the plugs, then run the wire down through the console towards the dash. I used an add a fuse on the inside fuse block to give the plugs power.

Great rig! I love how you don't have a ton of stuff hanging off of it as your daily. If I got a 2010-2013 GX would I be able to get away with less trimming on the body panels? Meaning still take off the running boards but not mess with the front bumper trim? Looking at the GX, but not feeling great about trimming for resale. Thanks for any advice.

Most definitely on the front end. The 10-13’ has a stubby front end and lots of people get away with not trimming it (especially with larger tires and /or lift). Rear panels are the same.

I know fuel economy on the GX’s is already low. But I’m curious if you’ve had a noticeable drop in mileage with the lift, tires, extra weight of protection, rack, etc. The safari comment was great. Don’t know why I never thought of that, but literally what the large bumpers with hoops remind me of. Really love the subtly of the CBI bumper.

I have not had any noticeable difference in mpg. I know the more rugged bumpers can really kill mpg - 2-4mpg. I get about 20 going 55 and about 14 fully loaded going 85mph. Thx for the comments!

Great question! First, i have a full size spare in the wheel well so I do carry one. I’m not a fan of the hitch mounted options but mostly because I use my hitch quite often (trailer, bike rack, etc) and also don’t like how it decreases the departure angle which already sucks on the Gx. Some ppl love them tho to each their own. Rear steel bumpers are ridiculously expensive!!! Thanks for the sub!

Lol you have a sharp eye. I found this one where the actual charging disk comes out of the larger piece. Fits perfectly. I’m actually going to make a short video on that and the mounting track soon. I recently picked up an element fire extinguisher for my truck. I really like it over the congenital ones. I built a bracket and mounted it to the rails for the drivers seat. All I have to do in case of a fire is reach down between my legs and grab it.

@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad No, it is very small. Maybe 1-1/4" in diameter and 12" long. I did however use a quickfist mount so that it is secured by more than clips. That way if there is a wreak or something it will stay in the holder. There are some videos around KZbin about it.

I was leery at first…wasn’t sure how well they would deflate on the trail. But after several trips deflating down to about 18psi I can say that they perform very well. As far as I know I haven’t “bottomed out”the tires (rock impact hitting the rim).

Have you seen the blitz bumper from victory 4x4? I was in love with the covert bumper from cbi until I saw the blitz bumper. I’m not planning on rock crawling in the gx460 either and victory 4x4 has an CNC aluminum version that weighs 70lbs. Coupled that with a 8k winch, that’s about 140-150lb total. Add 5-10 pounds of weight from each tire and you’re looking at a total of 175lb total. What was your total weight on the covert with the factor 55 and smittybuilt 10k? The winch weight might differ but that’s got to be over 200lba in the front foe the 1.5 inch lift. Dobinson says with each 100lb, you lose a 1/4 inch from the springs. Did you get a better constant load spring or was the stock 1.5 fine? It probably dropped your lift by a quarter inch in the front if you got stock load. Did you lift the rear or just try to keep it one inch rake (factory is 1.5 inch rake - roughly)

Hi there! When selecting a suspension lift its better to know all the weight you plan to put in it so that you can then figure out your approximate total lift. For me - I knew which bumper and winch I was going to use (and their weight which all told is about 140 lbs) so I worked with Kyle Fogle at Treaty Oak in Texas to select springs that would give me a 1.5” lift, with .5” lift from the tires for a total of ~2” lift. Dobinson USA and most other manufacturers have enough spring selection to match your total weight and ride type so really you can design something that works for you. Hope this helps! Hey on you're metaltec sliders, did you cut out the side step... how much did you cut, how many inches.

I dont know how much i cut off but i measured what remains with a cloth (flexible) tape measure. At the ends 4 3/8” remains. In the middle 3” remains. Again, that’s using a flexible tape measure applied down the full contour of the trim.

Nice video, though I confess I had a shot of Laphroaig every time you said "stealth." So, double thanks? I've jus bought a 2018 GX 460 Premium. It's a daily driver, but will be getting off the beaten path. I'll be taking it out later this month to see how it performs in stock trim. Right now, the biggest issue is how to attach my 48" handle Razor-Back round point shovel to the roof in the absence of a rack.

How much additional clearance did you get if any with just the larger tires?

I got a total of 2” (1.5” with suspension lift and .5” with tires) using this setup: Suspension Lift - Dobinsons 1.5” (GX Twin Tube Kit - C59-300(1.5” MD), GS59-221, GS59-705, C59-599) Tires: Falken Wildpeak 265/65/18 Keep in mind this is not guaranteed since every setup is different.

Thanks. Rubbed a little on the front wheel liner. Tied them back with a zip tie and problem solved. Some use a heat gun to permanently form them back to avoid rubbing.

i’ve been very pleased. That said, it is slightly different than stock ride. When empty it feels stiffer (similar to the Sport setting on the air bag equipped GXs). You will feel potholes and large road seams more than stock. The cruising ride at speed feels more confident that stock. However, when even slightly loaded it rides like butter but without bottoming out. Love the ride when loaded up for the trail! Hit up Kyle Fogle at Treaty Oak Offroad and tell him what you are wanting to do and he can help you figure out what best suits your needs.

Correct - cut the trim piece to work with the sliders and reattached to cover the ugly mounting points.

Question for you: have you ever experienced steering wheel vibrations on the highway? At highway speeds, I will sometimes randomly get a shimmy/vibration in my steering wheel, and it will go away after a little. doesn't always happen. I have a 2019 with 20k miles. I got new tires and that didn't fix it. I've been told its a quirk with this car. Have you ever had that?

Never… but it sounds like a Jeep death wobble caused by an imbalance of tires, suspension and geometry. If your rig is stock - 0% chance this should be happening. If you have a lift or bigger tires could be a culprit. If the latter, see if you have a good 4x4 shop around you that can troubleshoot.

Roof rack, bumper, rock sliders, light bar, accessories all by myself. Did most of the suspension myself (had to get help reattaching sway bar on front and disconnecting springs in the rear). I’d budget about $1k for each major component.

Thanks! Only thing I might change is put a 2” (i stead of 1.5”) suspension lift on for more clearance on the trail. Otherwise, love it!

Stock front clearance was 21°. After lift and front bumper new front approach angle is 35°. Rear increased from 23° to 25° from lift.

We’re you able to use stock skid plates with the CBI bumper?

Yes - the stock skid plates mount back in their original spots. That said, I recently installed ARB skid plates to provide adt'l protection. The CBI bumper blocked the front most mounting holes needed for the ARB skid plates and required me to drill new holes through the CBI bumper in order to attach the ARB front skid plate to the front frame member. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn3Qd6ppmcmDkJo

I'm getting into Overlanding; looking at online sites for getting a GX. I hope to purchase in 3 months or so. Do you know any good forums for the NY area (or east coast)? Also, any good shops in the NY area. I don't drive much daily so when I do, I'm looking to get out of NY. I currently don't have a car (no need for one).

I’m in Texas so can’t suggest any local shops in NY but would imagine there are some. Lots of overlanders in Penn and they gotta take their rigs somewhere. For your new Used GX I would suggest the typical used car apps (CarGuru, Cars.com, etc). They’ll be babied rigs used to go to the grocery store so plenty of miles left. Decide what you want to do for suspension and know that based on that some gear (like air suspension) may have to come off and therefore isn’t worth paying for as an option. Lastly, you can checkout the GX community on Facebooks and on clublexus.com. Good luck!

Just getting into the GX460. Had to "consolidate" my Ford Expedition and Jeep Rubicon into 1 vehicle so I thought that this platform was perfect. I have exactly the same situation using this as my daily driver and needed to have it fit in my office garage which is stupid low at 6'4". I love your approach and have the same philosophy trying to keep it stealthy as I have to also entertain clients, etc. and drive my wife to dinner on "date nights". I plan to follow in your footsteps with your build. BTW, I am also a Ham. If you ever change your UHF/VHF rig, you can most likely have a "Mars Mod" done on the new radio and also Tx on GMRS channels. So you go from 2 radios to 1. I have that same Kenwood but also have a Yaesu FTM500 which I plan to install in my GX with that Mod. I found that that Garmin system is very slow so years ago I bought a Sat phone which is super reliable. Looking forward to your future videos!

Hey Ashish! It's a Premium. I didn't want to get the Luxury and have to remove a bunch of equipment (air bags, adjustable suspension settings) that I wouldn't be able to use once I installed a lift.

Was there a reason for going with Metal tech instead of cbi for sliders?

Yes - i wanted a smooth outboard rail that kicks out at the back. A smooth rail is less likely to get hung up when sliding over a rock. The kickout helps protect rear tires.

Hey there, maybe you can answer this for me - I got the same tires (and lift kit 😃👍) after watching this video and one thing I just noticed after having tires put on is that the sidewall tread goes in the opposite direction on each side of the car. Did you notice this as well? I guess it really doesn’t matter because of the actually surface tread type being the same? but thought I’d come back to this video to check yours out and they are the same way. Is there a reason for this or just coincidence?? Thanks for all the helpful info! I actually bought the tires, lift kit, roof rack, bumper, and sliders in spring of 2021 after watching your videos and am just now getting around to putting everything on lol

For your applications, this is a well done build! Actually after watching this video, I can say, I like your wheels more on the GX than the 4runner Pro wheels. A tip for your fire extinguisher, you can add a mole panel to the front bottom of your front or passage seat and install the extinguisher there, just my 2 cents, hope it helps. Not bad at all. I dont notice unless the sunscreen is open. Then its just a slight noise. Occasionally a little flutter around 55mph if the wind is just right. I got the wind kit to go with it which helps a ton.
