One thing you should consider regarding the engineers: they have to achieve specific targets: EPA / marketing requirements. Especially the mileage (MPG) requirements. This alone makes them to configure the vehicle in a ‘less capable’ model and compromises have to be made. V8 is a thirsty beast. In order to achieve the mileage targets, they have to ‘kill’ the approach angle + reduce unsprung mass. This is what these cars have such big / low front bumper dressings (aero) and have tire / wheel sizes to achieve these targets. For off-road enthusiasts, we are ok to pay more for gas to regain these capabilities. As for the geometry, majority of the kits out there are designed to correct this. These are important things consider in conjunction to your excellent points.

Totally agree, this thing stock can do a lot. I went on a 4 months overlanding trip with complete stock everything except adding a roof rack cause I needed an awning and extra storage. Stock tires. 44 states, 40k miles, never stuck once. Only after the trip, changed to a set of KO2s cause it’s time to change tires and Costco had a sweet deal.

Appreciate the perspective. I’ve kept luxury 2016 stock except adding wild peaks and the plug and play dr KDSS to turn off the system above 18 mph. It makes the ride softer on washboard and rough roads. I don’t think it’ll hurt the system. Do you think it will? I like your pov on keeping it stock and but was surprised the stock could/should handle the weight of the new bumper. The GX is a beast. Thanks for all the content.

Great take. You know one thing that comes to mind that could be considered a better modification than lifting the GX is changing the front and rear bumper for better approach and departure angles. Also the factory steps get in the way all the time. Deleting those or changing them to a thinner Rock slider would give you some of the benefits that a lift would, and you'd feel the benefits. Thank you for the video

This is such an important argument. I have literally ruined vehicles I’ve owned in the past, thinking I can out engineer the engineers. Exhibit A would be my 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4. An amazing car that was engineered in Japan with features like all wheel drive, Active Suspension, Active Aero (front and rear spoilers tilt) and Active Exhaust. I found an unmolested example in 2003 with 38,000 miles. I took it to a Mitsubishi master mechanic who advised not to modify. I joined some forums and everybody told me I needed to modify it. Sadly, I needed to “add an egg”. I spent a small fortune adding Tanabe exhaust, Tein coil overs, Koenig wheels and Nittos, short throw shifter; racing clutch intakes; wires etc. By the time I was done, the car was completely different, and now I can say I ruined it. The drivability had been altered to where it was much less enjoyable in most situations. I like to think I learned something from that experience. I’m taking possession of a perfect 2019 Lexus GX 460 with 35k miles. I am going to be extremely hesitant to do anything to it that takes away from its stock form and function. I really like the idea of not lifting this vehicle and you make great arguments why we shouldn’t. The Japanese engineers truly know what they are doing. “Relentless pursuit of perfection” seems like a slogan rooted in engineering. With the KDSS, Tokiko shocks, and the added features in the Luxury model- it seems like you are really messing with a lot of engineering when you alter with a lift, or even larger size tire. Thanks again for the outstanding content!

Thank you 😃. I agree with what you said about "outdoing the engineers"... it never works 😆... always makes things worse no matter if it's a miata or a mack truck. Fact is engineers want to keep the rubber on the road.. ie maximum contact and thus traction.. same goal as "tuners"... once you get honest with yourself, you tend to have an amazing respect for what the engineers have done right out of the box. Not saying special racing applications can't benefit from mods but "normal use vehicles" seldom benefit and often get ruined... Will the "proud" modder admit he ruined his ride. nope...

That was an interesting history lesson you pointed out. I'm all about function. Looks are of no consideration for myself. You make outstanding points. And the reality is not many owners are going to take this in harsher environments than you have. I like your style of waiting until things break before modifying such as your bumper. Stock is good!! Thanks for the content I"m finding this channel very helpful as I start shopping for a GX460. I do have a counterpoint based on my 5th Gen 4Runner experience. Yes you have to trade some stock characteristics for a lift (less fuel efficiency mainly). Where I'd offer a different point of view is whether the aftermarket can beat stock shocks. There are several brands that offer beefier shocks and you don't have to lift the vehicle. Take a look at Icon 2.5" extended travel shocks for example. I'm all for keeping a truck stock, but do feel you can buy "better" shocks in the aftermarket that will last a long time.

I'm in a somewhat similar boat. I only recently got my GX and I don't feel I really want a lift. As of right now I'm bone stock. But eventually want to get a stealth bumper and get some rock sliders. What kind of clearance do you get after the bumper trim and running board replacement? Depending on the tires you could be looking at an inch extra clearance by itself.

I'm new to off roading (just bought a 2018 4Runner Limited) and have been educating myself on things like safety equipment (have ordered skid plates and rock rails and bought a few recovery things), off road driving, whether I need to make modifications. There are a few topics where the conventional wisdom (it's not whether to lift but how much to lift, air down your tires to drive off road, etc.) have left me scratching my head because they didn't make intuitive sense to me. I'm glad to find the channel of an experienced off roader who can explain some of these kind of issues and make me feel like I'm not crazy. The skid plates and rock rails were no brainers for me. I hope I'm being too conservative and never even scrape them, but I view them as insurance while I'm getting off road driving experience to minimize the chance I end up with a broken down vehicle in the middle of nowhere. The 4x4 shop I've been dealing with that is going to install the rails and plates talked about a 2.5" lift kit (Old Man Emu) - that's about $2K, then when you do that you need bigger tires and rims and that's going to be another $2K or more to replace nice rims and tires that probably have 50K miles left on them. For what benefit? I'm not even sure. But I can see what will be worse, even ignoring the $4K+ I'd spend to do it - the vehicle will have a higher center of gravity and be more dangerous in terms of rollover both off road and on road, it will be worse for towing a small trailer, it will get worse gas mileage, the tires will cost more and wear out faster, I could have unintended consequences like ongoing alignment issues or wearing out parts prematurely because I've changed the mathematics of the vehicle versus how it was designed. Your video has helped solidify my inclination to leave the vehicle alone and do nothing to the suspension until it leaks. I bought it because I have had great experience with the reliability of Toyota and Lexus vehicles, and second guessing their engineering and build decisions and spending money in search of benefits I can't even define doesn't make any sense. I'm with you, everybody should do whatever they want to do with their vehicles based on their own preferences, but I think the stock 4Runner Limited with some added safety equipment is going to be able to do just about anything I want to do with it. If I find out otherwise after driving it for a year, I'll reconsider.

Thank you fornyour kind comments. As far as offroading. Toyota engineers know what they're doing. In my opinion a lift will remove more than people think they will gain... again this is just my opinion. Yes clearance will improve, but at the expense of articulation, and stability... the GX will be more "tippy" without articulation. In stock form the body remains "level" while the wheels articulate and trace the undulations of the offroad surfaces... VERY stable.. Much of "modding" is not rooted in actual function but instead looks, Bernays, mythologies, internet folklore... and that's FINE if that's what you're into, but as far as functional improvements... skids, and chop the bumpers.. and some KO2s does wonders
@Don-md6wn
@Don-md6wn Жыл бұрын
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I'll look at the KO2s when it's time for new tires, but the 4Runner I bought came with Michelin LTX M/S, 245/60r20, that only have 15K or so miles on them and are probably good for another 40-50K if rotated and taken care of. It's the same tire I put on my Lexus RX 350 and have had no problems with for over 30K miles. Everything I read says the Michelins are a good off road tire and reliable, though I'm sure there are better ones probably including the KO2s. Your videos on tire pressure were also an eye opener for me, as I was trying to figure out how airing tires down 25-30% (pretty much standard advice online) to drive them 50 miles on a dirt/gravel road made any sense. I've never done that with a Highlander or Lexus RX 350 which I have driven on plenty of lousy forest service gravel/dirt roads. It seemed to me that you'd be stressing the sidewalls and making a blowout more likely as the tires heated up. I'd think the thing to do would be to run the tires at the normal PSI and reduce your speed to where you weren't bouncing and could come to a normal stop without slamming on the brakes if you saw a rut or some jagged rocks in the road ahead of you. Drive a little slower in 3rd or 4th gear if appropriate. Based on your video on tire pressure, I'm inclined to keep the tires on the 4Runner at normal pressure off road until I have traction issues, with the possible exception of dropping down maybe 25% if I'm driving a trail that's mostly sand and that I know has some spots where you can bog down.

Just my opinion and it’s inline with what you’re saying here; On my 2013GX. I left the factory struts in, topped them with toytec(made in USA)spacers. Factory UCAs, factory shocks in the rear with ICON progressive springs. I only really wanted the GX to be less squishy pulling my boat. By adding the ICONs I needed to level out by using the spacers. When I brought it for realignment, mechanic said. This is within spec, no need to fiddle with anything. You start getting aggressive with the lifts, I’d say, anything over 3.5” trying to stuff 35’s in the wheel wells ..buy a jeep and hack the hell outta that instead. These GXs have been perfected to take you to the ends of the earth, just the way they are. Thanks for these vids, love that you take your chair with you! ✌🏽

I like the way you think and enjoyed this video. I just bought a 4runner and I'm amazed at what it can get through. I'm also astonished at how bad I can fail, but I have to try stuff that is scary to get better. Anyway, nature is telling me I should have waited until my skid plates and rock sliders arrived lol. I'm trying to stay on the logging roads, but I can't help myself...Anyway, everyone is telling me I need a lift and I'm just not sure that's right based on what has given me trouble so far. I've gotten dents and scrapes, but when I got high centered, it wasn't because I needed 2", I needed at least 6" to do it the noobie straight approach, but while I was looking at my situation I noticed I could probably have approached it from an oblique angle. I might have scraped or lifted a tire, but I'd have three on the ground instead of zero to get me out lol. Skill and experience trumps equipment.

Our 2010 with 180k+ miles has gone everywhere we've asked it to. The current limitation is the need of a snorkel. Swollen creek crossings have forced us to turn around too many times. I agree, I'm in the stock height camp as well. If off roading over huge rocks or you need to increase your approach and departure angles, perhaps you would be wise to look at lifting your rig 2-3 inches and adding larger tires for more clearance. However, you may also need to change upper and lower control arms, shocks, adding a front diff drop kit, and, in this case, modifying the KDSS system as well. My Prado does not have KDSS so I wouldn't need to modify that. I added Toyota TRD 17" wheels and 270/70/17 Falcon Wildpeak AT3 tires for about a 1/2" clearance gain. Next, I will be looking at better and more comprehensive skid plates in case I do encounter the odd rock or two. Great video, I'm liking your style and ease of explanation.

The truck is a Toyota Prado. It has some similarities to the 4 Runner, but the truck in frame, suspension and engine is a Prado. In Europe they come diesel. The V8 used the US version of the Lexus Prado has the old V8 from the Mini Tundra which was around up until 2011 ish. That V8 engine, transmission is worth a Million miles. I agree with the lifting, but a 2 inch lift is needed for deeper off roading, for the average guy leave it as is and enjoy. You can put beefier tires once its time to toss out the factory ones and good enough. When you lift a truck like the GX, that Toyota built and tested, you can lose tilt articulation and can make the truck more prone to tipping over. Cheers!

I appreciate the video. I agree there are people that feel a lift is a basic requirement for off road performance. The reality is not that clean cut at all. The reason in my mind to add anything to the suspension is multifactorial. First is weight. adding a new front bumper, which the GX does benefit from adds some weight, and if you want a winch, which I personally like to have, more weight. Also adding other gear, a roof rack, drawer system, tools, and gear adds weight. This is going to change the driving dynamics and the engineers at Toyota as good as they are cannot anticipate every situation. Tires, if you want slightly larger tires clearance can become an issue, granted on the GX the body becomes a limiting factor very quickly. Finally adding some capability with improved dampening from reputable suspension manufactures (Bilstein, icon, OME, King etc) can get you a setup that will respond better to washboards and rough terrain. Additionally having some adjustment in the shocks can help with varying amounts of weight etc. I am sure you as everyone is aware of this. With all that said I think a lift or any suspension modifications should be last on the list, after you add all your weight, take the rig out and use it for a while. Then carefully decide if the tradeoffs you mentioned are worth while. Just my thoughts. thanks for the insight it is nice to have someone think through the issues and not just install product x and tell me how great it is.

I have found some good deals under 50k mileage, but not sure since I also believe being the first owner of these type of machines could render beneficial as well. Any advice will be highly welcomed.

This video is much appreciated. My wife and I are about to complete a sale on a GX460, to be our family/camping vehicle. Friends of mine are quick to say "when is the lift coming" or "haha just watch this snowball into a long-travel monster on 35s". But the reality is that yes, the vehicle will be most reliable and function correctly as it was engineered by Toyota. After watching this, I'm convinced that the money is better spent on things like Prado 150 rockers + sliders and eventually, an aftermarket front bumper to regain the approach angle that was lost with the stock Lexus spindle front fascia. As a side note, I spent several years in college exploring abandoned mines in the CA deserts and I took my stock, stickshift Toyota Corolla to places that most GXs will never see. A majority of your success in off-road driving comes down to driver skill and the only way to get that is practice. 2WD off-roading is all about momentum and wheel placement!

As a hardcore off roader, I have a few vehicles, a 99 ram 1500 4x4 lifted 2.5 inches, a 07 wrangler Rubicon and a new owner of a 13 GX460 lifted 2.5 inches. My jeep is obviously my off road rig and is way more capable than the GX, I'm not lying to myself about it. The GX is capable but doesn't hold a candle to a Rubicon. I lifted my other vehicles because I do go to very hard to get to camping spots, the GX has a lot higher towing capacity than the wrangler that I was using to tow my off road trailer. I like the look as well but it's mainly the break over angle I'm after, I've high centered the truck even after the lift so I feel the GX would be better. That has a foamcell shock, I'm definitely not worried about a failure of a shock even if it was manufactured in China. At the end of the day, do whatever you need your vehicle to do. If you need the clearance then lift it, just know your mpgs will go down slightly but it will in fact be less likely to be high centered while off road when lifted.

Thanks! Can I tease about the dirt on your dash? Just kidding. Looks like you really enjoy your beast. Have you driven a lifted GX? I am thinking about it but after watching your videos I think I have more to consider. The idea of “rebuilding” shocks every 50K is not very appealing. I was in Sedona and was reluctant to take my GX off road (the serious trails) but I still have the stock bumper and steps so clearance would have been an issue. I will read more comments to see if I can answer my questions. Did you mention tire size. Just stock sizing?

I like the application of cake mix sales psychology vs. Vehicle modders psychology. Deep! My assessment of extreme Vehicle modders (especially needless mods) usually devolves into their comfort with the size of their Johnson:) Also, it does crack me up to see a Japanese Vehicle with American Flag stickers all over it. Even if it was built in a plant here, it is a foreign vehicle manufacturer. A manufacturer that was our enemy in the last world war as well. Sarah Silverman sang it best..."Jewish people driving German Cars.... What the **** is up with that S***". And I say this as a proud America Army Vet Toyota owner! But just to piss off the American Flag Toyota guys in So Cal, I put a Japanese flag on my Yota! Keep up the good work Mr. Eckhart Tolle of the 4x4 World!

As an owner of a Premium GX460, who also considered the Luxury trim, my decision came down to: It’s only on the rear suspension, there is the expensive chance it would need repair, and I heard stories about the “lean” where it would drop unevenly and give the vehicle a lean.

The Gx460 still have the same stupid drivetrain issues the Prados have, overheating, locking/unlocking on extended grades, not enough valve body pressure, gear hunt. they're fixes for all the issues(out of Aus) but it'd be nice if Toyota would just make some small changes to fix those instead of ignoring them for all these years. Hopefully you never see conditions that bring thing issues up but if you do, you'll probably be annoyed enough to "fix" them. Toyota is aware but has chosen to do nothing instead of making those small changes.

Reasonable expectations? I live in Ouray, CO in the summer. We have miles of high alpine 4x4 trails from mild to wild. A friend who is an experienced 4x4 showed up with his new stock 4Runner trail model. He drove Black Bear pass trail. The vehicle tested it's skid plates several times. My lifted GX has no such affliction. 8" ground clearance is fine on a two door Wrangler. A longer wheel base then the ground clearance becomes an big issue. A funny thing happened on my GX. The air ride was removed. The vehicle was lifted 3" with KO2 tires. On cross country trips the GX has a much better ride. The MPG did not suffer. None of the mods were for looks.

In general you are right in the details you are misleading. The stock is fantastic for most conditions not for all. It depends on your use. Yes there are people that do it just for looks and that is their choice but do not lump all people in the same general category. There are many suspension systems for a particular use that are superior and not made in China . EMU Old man suspension made in Australia being a n example and superior to the Japenese shocks in every way from an engineering stand point. Trade off yes but the question are they worthwhile in turns of use. I own one and do not plan any modifications but to be fair you did come off judgemental. Otherwise you make great educational videos and keep them coming.

If I get but so hardcore off road I ride dirt bikes so it’ll never give me that rush anyways. I’ll use the gx to take me and the bike to that place . Don’t get me wrong I dig the looks of a lot of the modded rigs but you give up too much from what I do 95%+ of the time (mpg, ride comfort 100% of the time) but hey I had a Prius for years too. Sorry. I am a subscriber and usually really like your videos but I think you are at least incomplete if not completely off base here. If I follow your breakdown of GX users there IS a 4th camp: those that wish to drive offroad in higher risk situations and who want confidence that their rig will survive. And based on your other videos about skid plates, I assume that you have been forced into lines where you seriously scraped your front or rear diff on at least one occasion. It is not made for that ;). The solution(s) are 1) increase ground clearance (which you seem to oppose) and 2) increase protection (which you do not). Ground clearance = tire diameter. Suffice it to say I could not even get past the "gatekeeper" obstacle on Broken Arrow, which is one of the most scenic trails here in AZ, and only a "moderate" level 3 on the easiest lines, if I didn't have at least 33" tires (I tried!!). And I couldn't clear my 33" BFG KO2's without at least a 2" lift on my 2008 GX470 (plus other minor mods). And if you want another inch of clearance, then 35" tires absolutely require a lift and other mods as well. My understanding is that the clearance issues are exactly the same on the GX460 - if not worse. And, since I am a paranoid engineer who designs & builds automotive safety sensors, I have also replaced the plastic side steps with rock sliders that actually protect the door frames, and (like you) added skid plates that protect all the stuff that Toyota engineers never expected to get banged repeatedly. Both have battle scars & I DO NOT drive aggressively. I am not about rock crawling - I just want to get safely to the destination without damaging my ride. This is not about "adding an egg" to personalize my ride - although it is nice to not be EXACTLY like the other 4 bazillion white GX's & 4Runners on the road. And I bet many of your viewers are the same. So there is a 4th group. And given that you added skid plates to your GX, you're in it too! :) This criticism aside, I really appreciate some of your other videos. Your analysis and video on ATRAC was, frankly, brilliant. And has forced me to seriously reconsider if I really need the expense and complexity of lockers. So thanks. I do appreciate your content and willingness to think outside the box.
