According to my local Lexus dealer, if your tire light comes on you should not try to reset it because it is self-resetting once the problem and trigger is fixed. Resetting can overwrite proper thresholds and info saved by the dealership in your tire monitoring system. Watch video to determine why your light is coming on. Vehicle shown is a 2007 RX350 and this 2nd generation covers 2003-2008. Your model year may be different.
UPDATE: For a shorter video & a demo of the tire light going off after re-inflation, check out the below video I later did when the tire light came on again months later from a leaking tire. The point here is this is a self-correcting system if pressure is low, once air pressure is correct in each tire the light goes off right away and you're done. The exception is if you have a bad sensor, etc.

UPDATE: here's a shorter version of this video I did months later after the light came on again due to a leaking tire. This demonstrates how the tire light absolutely goes off immediately in the self-correcting system once air pressure is restored. There is no 'reset' you have to do when the light is on due to low air pressure: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3uUoKKrZt6EgMk

This was SO helpful, thank you!! I just bought a used Lexus RX350 yesterday, and the light came on literally as I was driving home from the dealership. They put new tires on, so I’m guessing they didn’t do the initialization process correctly, because the pressure is fine. But I’ll check the glovebox button too. Amazing. Thanks again - so helpful!!

Had the same problem with the Tire Pressure light coming on in my 2009 RX350 and went straight to my Lexus dealer here in Clearwater FL who checked it and it was the spare tire low pressure being the issue. The dealer fixed it and all my tires without any charge. I have always had me car serviced there so this video is 100% correct and very helpful .My opinion is that the dealer will charge you about the same price as some other mechanic and warranty their work since they are very customer oriented.

hi Frank, agreed - some dealerships are dishonest (Ive had that exp also) but most are more experienced with the technical side of certain cars and the labor rates are usually about the same as the local corner shop. I definitely trust them more on the technical or big jobs. If I am going to have a waterpump or timing belt done I'd rather have the dealer do it as they are working on only Toyota Lexus and are experts.

Hi PetFoodGuy, sounds like a dishonest dealer your friend is dealing with. The likelihood of all sensors being bad at once is quite remote, unless he's been driving around with the light on for years. They do have batteries needing replacement, but they don't all fail at once. Also I recently found out that many tire shops can service and replace the little sensors with a quality aftermarket one for a fraction of what Lexus charges. Such as America's Tire, Discount Tire, etc. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting.

@yakitoriPB
@yakitoriPB 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on your tpms. My ls460 has actual psi readouts on the dash. The sticker is cold tire pressure. Mine us 33psi front and rear. The set button procedure is used to accurately display pressures. The procedure is to use a Gauge to set tires to 33 psi. Then turn on acc while holding set button....until the dash tire light blinks 3 times. Then start the car and idle until system receives the readouts.. they should display 33 from that point. This sets the baseline for the dash readouts. That way you're basically telling the car what 33psi actually is. So when pressures change with temperature fluctuations....it will reflect the accurate pressures in the tires.

I normally buy my tires from a reputable family owned tire shop in Chula Vista California, Cherness Tire World. I just had my 08 Lexus RX350 in to my local tire shop in for the first 6,000 mile rotation of four new Micheline Defenders. They also replaced the four tire sensors on the new tires at the time of installation. Since then the tire rotation, the low tire indicator light has come on all time. After many numerous visits to the tire shop. They have checked tire pressure at 35 psi on all tires, replaced one tire sensor, replaced a battery on another and replace the tire sensor on the spare. All at no charge. Most recently I thought we had solved it, but after driving 50 miles the the low pressure light came on again. What do you recommend? I do appreciate that you respond to all your comments received. Thank you.
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade Жыл бұрын
Hi, that's a bizarre situation that it keeps happening. The psi threshold might be set too high. One thing maybe is ask where the pressure threshold is set electronically that makes the light come on. For awhile mine was in the mid 30s psi so the darn light was coming on often in normal use, especially when the cooler Temps come in and it's colder in the morning and I raised the issue of where the threshold was at. So they suggested dropping the threshold to around 30 or 28psi where the computer then puts the light on. This solved the issue for me, this was a few years ago. You and your mechanic should decide what number is right for you. If this doesn't work, then you have another problem like the TPMS system itself which would be very very rare. It's usually just a sensor or pressure issue. I like Discount/America's Tire, they always find the bad sensor and the ones they've installed are good quality and work like OEM, I really trust the sensors they use . I'm glad you have a good shop to work with as well but if the issue doesn't go away maybe it wouldn't hurt to talk to Discount Tire.

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING TIRE PRESSURE COMMENTS: You should use the pressure your Lexus dealer recommends. In my case they told me 35-36 psi, this is not cold pressure, this is pressure after the car has warmed up running/driving and what they put in my car when in for service. The door sticker says 30 psi but that is for stock tires AND when the car is dead cold in the garage. Actual driving pressure is always a bit higher & can vary by brand & air temp. The dealer also told me IF YOU RUN YOUR TIRES TOO LOW OF PRESSURE (such as close to the cold pressure) THE DARN LIGHT WILL COME ON more often, especially on colder days. I have seen this to be true! ...so I go with 34-36 psi in my tires which is in the sweet spot of pressure and keeps the light off, and is well under the max pressure, but once again ask your Lexus dealer to make an informed decision for your tires. You can also ask Lexus to lower the TPMS pressure threshold in the computer if your light comes on too much. Mine is a 2007 RX350, your vehicle's system may be different. There is also a shorter version of this video linked in the Description box above... Thank you.

Tire pressure is always measured cold/not driven for a variety of reasons and tire manufacturers (and car manufactrurers) factor this into the results you get when doing so. Did your dealership tell you to measure them warm? This makes no sense to me that they would say this.
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 3 жыл бұрын
@@BPoweredLove yes you're correct ideally its measured cold. But that's not always possible - like when your car is in for service, its 90 degrees outside, or the engine and axles are hot and you pull in for a pressure check. How about the person who has to drive to the local gas station to fill a low tire, he cant use cold pressure. All These scenarios raise pressure a bit. Even Discount Tire likes to put at least 34 psi in my tires if I stop in for a tire rotation or leak fix...I would think Americas Tire and Discount Tire know more about this than anyone

@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 6 жыл бұрын
hi Ron, pretty sure the dealership or tire shop has to sync up the little sensors that are on the INSIDE of the tire or valve when they put the new tires on. If a tire shop did this for you, they should have discussed this with you. I dont think it's something you can do yourself without removing the tire but I'm not positive on that. To be sure though you might want to call the Lexus dealer and ask what they do in this situation, or a local reputable tire shop for another opinion. Also it would be important to find out if the sensors were previously operable on the old RX that you took the tires from and whether that little yellow dash light was off. Otherwise, you could be paying someone to pull all those tires to check and then find out you still need a sensor. Pretty sure if the tire light was OFF in the old RX, that means the sensors & their little batteries are working, but they still need to be synched up to your new vehicle. It's a royal pain, I know. : /

My '08 RX400h TPMS is more trouble than it's worth! I've had to have the tire sensors replace at a cost of $660. The lights have come on needlessly 2 or 3 times, the latest when cold temps fooled the system. I checked pressure in all 4 tires and all were at 33 psi (30 is the recommended pressure). Yet the lights stayed on. I reset the system with the button under the steering column, and the lights went off after I turned off the ignition, pulled the key, then restarted. I wish I could disconnect the system!
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 5 ай бұрын
It certainly is an imperfect system on the older generations! No need to go to Lexus for the sensors and get ripped off when Discount/America's Tire used to do them for just $60/each and they do a great job. The cold weather doesn't really "fool" the system, it naturally lowers the air pressure triggering the lights. Both of my vehicle sprung the tire light this week in a cold snap, and one isn't a Lexus. There is a fix for this, when I first got my RX350 I asked Lexus to lower my threshold a little so the lights would't come on all the time. After this was done this annoyance of fluctuating air pressure & light coming on with the colder seasons was minimized big time. It's still going to come on when the pressure lowers, and you don't want it set too low, but sounds like yours was set too high just like mine was and coming on too much.

Hi Danny, I would skip the dealer and go to Discount Tire also known as America's Tire in some areas. Their sensors are around $50-70 for this vehicle if I recall, and their service is fantastic & they don't charge labor usually on this. They also do free flat repairs and rotations. They stock every sensor imaginable and always have the ones for the RX350... far as I remember the sensors at Lexus were over $100 each plus any labor that's why I started going to DT & AT.

I just got back from Lexus for this problem yesterday on my daughter's vehicle, they said two of the sensors are bad and they can replace them for $576.00 out the door. The parts were over $400 by themselves. For my wife's Lexus I'll probably order them from Rockauto and have a tire shop put them on because I don't have access to a tire mounting machine. Labor should be very little, it's just pulling the tire and putting the sensor into the valvestem.

You indicate the spare tire is monitored too? That's absurd & suspect (especially when other vehicles don't monitor the spare) possibly among further misinfo or another ommission & conflict from the owner manual. The OM does not mention the spare involvement with TPMS, only indicates performing periodic or routine manual inflation pressure checks. The OM shows a tire rotation scheme that includes the spare yet further narrative in the OM also allows for not involving the spare in normal rotation.
@FranklinBlunt
@FranklinBlunt 3 жыл бұрын
The Lexus owner manual information does have somewhat conflicting & rather incomprehensible information on some topics, but the info you were provided should clarify not refute unless there is a process to ensure a revision happens with accurate info & standardization. That self-correcting process is either suspect since the issues I've encountered reveal manufacturing problems with components, lack of technical knowledge & capabilities beside honesty among service personnel, or the TPMS scheme needs dumped, which it should even as exploitation, misinfo, frustration, & corruption exacerbate. The OM is poorly written (in some aspects that is true) or Lexus purposely obscures the correct information & that makes them liable; it is Lexus' responsibility to revise & truthfully inform as the misinfo proliferates, but it begins with Lexus. Appreciate mentioning the code select switch under the glove box that determines coding for either Main or Secondary sets of sensors; another issue among the OM & accurate technical info for appropriate calibration & reliable operation beside the prevalent misinfo, unreliability, & inoperation. I also have concerns with the TPMS & other technology that may have been early or legacy, such as my 2007, but trying to work with current components because manufacturing & technical service oversight & reliability has deteriorated without any resolution considering prevalent individual & institution ethical & moral corruption along with socio-economic disparity & injustice inherent with modern society. TPMS is another scam exploited from singular or few supposed incidents, tragedy which the industry willingly exploited & complicit legislators indulged without any concern for expense & stress imposed upon responsible people. The auto technicians often lack knowledge & capability (have you ever had an inspection by Lexus? They are terribly insufficient & only inform about matters readily observable such as tires but neglect performing OBD or any valuable info especially for an Hybrid owner) while the manufacturers evade oversight for terribly inaccurate & often out of tolerance components even as the monitoring systems are as worse & unreliable since unable to discern & account for acceptable variations deemed normal. There is no standardization, no competent & reliable calibration between sensors & control or monitoring systems, there is no reliability in TPMS, there is no use for TPMS since there is no replacement for self-maintenance as the TPMS info always advises to inflate & verify by performing manual tire pressure checks. Tires are among the most varied components affected by road, driver, & environmental conditions (as if changing even negligible ambient conditions would cause such vast changes in tires among the misinfo that irresponsible people use to evade accountability) of a motor vehicle; another absurdly delusional scam that futilely attempts imposing stability or imagines constant conditions when it is impossible. The scam is lucrative so indulged by instilled institutional & individual corruption especially rife in USA. Unless honest intelligent people take action to revise policy & impose accountability then corruption & outright evil will continue with various exploitation, socio-econ disparity, beside blatant abuses & harm often suppressed from exposure. I just had a tire & sensor change, it has been a fiasco, the facility has wasted much of my time & techs willingly broke the law by deliberately failing to calibrate TPMS without informing me of the process else iaw them I was supposed to drive 15 miles so the TPMS would adjust but it hasn't so either they are still incompetent & dishonest or the supposed self-adjustment is B$ beside the TPMS still unreliable. I know the matter respectively apportions the fault to all of these issues & personnel, while I am financially exploited & undeservedly imposed with an unreliable potentially unsafe system, although I am diligent irt routine maintenance.

@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 3 жыл бұрын
hi, the batteries inside the TPMS cannot be replaced by you, they are usually self-contained units and the whole unit is basically replaced inside each tire. They can last anywhere from 4-7 years so if one is going the others might soon. I'd suggest checking out place like America's Tire or Discount Tire - they have the correct units for Lexus and are much cheaper than going to the dealership. I have used other places before AT & DT & found AT & DT to be the easiest to deal with and very knowledgable as an alternative to paying higher dealer prices.

If your tires have been replaced and this problem started how do you re-initialize the system. The Lexus dealer said all the sensors are bad and a tire shop says all the senors are good. The button is not pressed in. Tire pressure is within specs. So why is the SET button in the driver compartment there if the dealer says not to use it?
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 5 жыл бұрын
Hi PetFoodGuy, thanks for your question - the sensors do not all go bad at one time when they were just working yesterday, so obviously the Lexus dealer gave you wrong information. Amazing isn't it, from the professionals?! Anyway the tire shop should have corrected this for you for free and not given you the car back with the light on. Most will handle this for you. Here's the deal (also on pg. 305-306 of owner's manual) - the Set button is there for a physical change to the car that was other than just the tire, and here's the list for when the Set button is needed: a sensor was changed, the vehicle has different SIZE tires or diff't wheels now mounted, or you now want to run a diff't pressure in your tires. If you just replaced tires with the same type or size that was on the car before (same pressure), nothing should need to be done, it should self correct, it's a self correcting system. However it is possible the shop damaged a sensor when they took off the tire. That will make the light come on. Or they swapped valve stems and didn't put a sensor back. If you see my other video about this topic that says PROOF THE TIRE LIGHT GOES OFF, you will see how it is a self correcting system when pressure is restored. The same is true if just a tire is swapped out and the same pressure is used. Think about it - the little sensor can only check pressure, it does't know a new tire is in place. If diff't pressure tires or wheels are installed then it could trip the sensor. The fact your light is on signals one of the above problems like a sensor was knocked out or replaced and they didn't register the new sensor with your vehicle, assuming they put same kind of tires/pressure on. Easiest thing is call them and tell them they were working before you brought it in and they should fix it for you. Hope this helps, otherwise message me back!

Hi, you should go back there and tell the to correct the problem. The sensors have to be activated to your car, they should have the equipment to do that. If your light was on before you went in its possible the spare tire needs to be checked as well. They're not supposed to give the car back to you with the light on.

when would the set button be used?
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 3 жыл бұрын
One situation I had to use it was when the car was in for tire rotation and the shop messed with it and "set" the new air threshold way too high, the result was the darn light was coming on all the time when the tires naturally lost a little air. So I lowered the tire pressure a little, "set" it, so that the dash light wouldn't keep coming on needlessly. Then I refilled tires to correct pressure and problem solved hadn't had issues since then. I recommend asking your Lexus dealer if this is right decision for your car, but that's a scenario when I did it.

With this year and model, only the tire shop can check the sensor to test it or the internal battery and determine which exact sensor is faulty. But if your pressure is correct in all tires and the light is still on, you know at least one sensor is bad.

36 to 38 LBS Is way to high for your vehicle! Always go by what the Tire Information Sticker says in your door jamb! Lexus knows pressures will rise when they get warm, hence the 30 LB rating! As far as the pressure rating on the tire goes that is MAX pesssure that that particular tire can handle. That same exact tire could fit a hundred different vehicles, all with different tire pressure ratings! Also that max pressure on the tire is also there for when tire techs mount your tires they know what the MAX pressure is when seating the bead of the tire!
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 7 жыл бұрын
hi NEP, thanks for your comment & I respect your perspective. 35-38 psi is what Lexus recommends, as I said in the video that recommendation comes directly from Lexus of Carlsbad and I think they are qualified so don't shoot the messenger (me) lol. I inflate my tires to around 38 psi. Even at 38 the upper limit of the recommendation that is nowhere near the max psi the tire can hold. I also point out in the video clearly that 51 psi is the max pressure listed on the tire - what it can hold - and said that "you would never want to drive around" at that inflation. Keep in mind most people inflate their tires including me after driving around or getting to the gas station. So inflating to 38psi as recommended by Lexus is fine and actually less cold pressure psi as labeled when the tire is cold. If you only inflate your tires only to the cold pressure AND you do it at the gas station after you've been driving, you'll always be driving just a little low and may prematurely wear out your tread. People should always consider their local climate, driving habits and consult with a qualified mechanic to get their own personal psi recommendation, I'm only stating what Lexus told me. Thanks.

@@KeithBlade The max psi on the tire sidewall has nothing to do with the vehicle! The tire manufacturer has no idea what vehicle the tire is going on!!!! The max pressure is just an indication of what COLD pressure is required to achieve the maximum load that the tire will carry. I don't know about "Lexus of Carlsbad" recommends, but I do know what every car manufacturer, including Lexus, recommends - - - look at the door jamb sticker!! And, I believe the 'general rule' would be to add 4 psi to the cold inflation recommendation if you have to inflate your tires after driving and warming them up. So, the warm inflation setting for your Lexus should be about 34 psi.
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 4 жыл бұрын
@@curtc2011 I'm not disagreeing with you. And totally aware that tire sidewall pressure is not necessarily linked to the vehicle. I think 4psi as a general rule over the cold pressure is ok. I have been running mine at about 34-35 psi, and the cold pressure is 30 on the sticker. Yes, Lexus told me to run 35-38lb and that's what they put in it when the vehicle was in there for tire sensors. Since the max pressure the tire can hold is in the 40s I see no issue with running 35 or 36, even 38 in rare cases or it it's gotten hot outside and the pressure rises a couple pounds from 36 to 38. (I've also had Cooper Evolutions on this vehicle the exact same size tire and it's max pressure was 51!) My point is driving inflations around 36 psi are nowhere near the max pressure of what the tire can hold so this should be no cause for alarm. Of course everyone should ask their dealer says what pressure is right for their car, which is why I pointed it out in the video and people can make their own determination off that.

What if you hit the set button by accident, will that turn on the low tire light?
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 4 жыл бұрын
Xina, no. It won't turn it off, that could reset your tire pressure level in the monitoring system to what the tire pressure is in each tires. It's best not to touch that button unless you have to or are at the dealer getting tires. If you did touch and reset it, it would be a good idea to bring all of your tires and the spare up to proper air pressure, and then reset it properly with that button again. Having the right pressure reading stored in your car's computer tells the light when to come on when the pressure falls below that threshold. If your light has come on, something is wrong somewhere like a low tire or other issue mentioned in this video.

Great video but you went off when you talked about Lexus recommending 36 psi?? Lexus would recommend what is on the door jam - 30 psi. 30psi might heat up to 32 pr so but these tires should never have 36 psi in them. As someone else mentions 51psi is max where beyond that it could blow causing serious injury. Does the light have 2 modes- blinking and solid or just blinking? My friends 350 light will not go (blinking) out even after 5 good pressure inflations but his is an 08 so I am thinking the battery is gone being that it is 10 yrs+ on them. Thanks again for the video!
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 6 жыл бұрын
Hi condor, What Lexus recommends is what they told me so i'll take their word. Also the tires that are on my vehicle may not be stock OEM, mine are Goodyear Eagles but they ARE the exact size in the manual and doorjam. Keep in mind the doorjam is cold tire pressure (car in garage cold morning pressure), much different than what you would really run on the road or when the car is warmed up. I do mention in the video that you would never run the tires at max pressure (51 psi LOL), but I see no problem with 34-36 psi at all. If you run your tires at 30psi don't be surprised if you get sidewall punctures all the time and your tire light will come on more often. In my opinion that's too low but take your local dealer's recommendation. Another note - the Lexus dealer also told me that my sensors are programed to throw the light if pressure drops under about 28-29psi... therefore at your recommendation of running 30psi, your light will be coming on all the time when your tires drop a couple pounds low. Sounds like a hassle to me. Mine are in the sweetspot and my light never comes on and my tires aren't overinflated. Overinflated tires have no "bow" at the bottom. As for your friends question - he should check the spare, it's not too hard to lower the apparatus and test pressure without taking it out of the harness, the tool is buried in the trunk under the carpet. A low spare will ABSOLUTELY make the light come on. Again simple inflation will reset the light without doing any thing else. That would be the first thing to try as well as testing the others, after that it is likely a battery or bad sensor & a trip to the dealership. Thanks

flyin2orion so you’re video kind of made much to do of nothing. If the light doesn’t go off and you’ve clarified your tires are correct pressure, you want to reset it, what the system SHOULD do is of no relevance here. Not only that but leaving the light on with properly inflated tires leaves you with no ability to collect further data, which leaves you vulnerable to getting screwed over by walking into a shop with ignorant American consumer syndrome. You also lose the ability to be notified of another fire being low later because you left it on despite knowing your tires were properly inflated. For what? If you have a bad sensor great, that’s all the more reason to ignore the error it’s triggered until you can address it, you don’t need cripple your ability to gather further data and be warned by any of the functioning sensors on other tires. You’re using the info Lexus gave you about how the system SHOULD perform and extrapolating from that how to respond when the system isn’t responding how it should, which is fine, right up until the point you conclude that you should do nothing, and treat the system as if it’s still functioning properly or just wait until it’s been fixed, that’s terrible advice. You can say by telling you how it should work Lexus advised you that if the light stays on you need to further look into the problem/take it in etc. but that’s not a justification for leaving it on until then.

The door jam sticker is the final word here. The expansion is at a 4-6 psi from cold during use on the hiway (with air, not Nitrogen, which would be more like 3-4 psi max ) and after warmed up from driving on a warm day. 30psi at about 40-50 degrees F ( or even 32) but not 36 before driving. Whoever told you this at Lexus was not correct. Tires can be checked early morning if you dont use a garage, before the sun heats it up.
@KeithBlade
@KeithBlade 3 жыл бұрын
hi GF, while the vehicle was at Lexus the engine was warm and it was a bright sunny day after driving in. So if the vehicle is warm from driving that means the axels and rims are not cold thus possibly why Lexus told me 36psi. In a cold garage the next morning that could easily drop to around 31-32 psi and extremely close to the door jam sticker as you correctly pointed out is the final word.
