Instagram follow: / petescarport So since I purchased this 1996 sc300 manual, it has had a real bad cold start issue. All of you have been amazing helping me track down issue. Today I finally found out what it was.

I had a 2002 Lexus ls430 ultimate. I did a review video on it and love that car. Ended up fixing it and selling it for way more than I paid

@@petescarport bro I would like to thank you in advance I can't wait to check mine! Has to be that. I've been putting off redoing the timing belt (water pump impeller from pulley is wobbling). bc I knew the cold start gremlin was still lurking. I'm trying this asap.

@@petescarport Mine has same issue now also has high rev misfire and car idle stays at 1500 rpms check engine comes on but when car is shut and turn the key all the way to check codes the check engine light dont come on. What you think that can be?

I'm pretty sure that was a Knock Sensor you pointed/touched at 3:24 the 2JZ's have 2 of them on the same side. And the Coolant Temperature Sensor above that you touched at 3:26.
@petescarport4 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yes that makes sense. I'm guessing that would cause engine to not start.

Yes I do. It's been too hot out the last month to work on body but I have new videos out soon.

Did it give you a check engine light for the temp sensor ?
@cielosnegro4 жыл бұрын
The bottom sensor is a 1 of 2 knock sensors if disconnected it will set off a check engine. you can actually see the second knock senor that is identical further right under the intake manifold closer to the flywheel. The top sensor is a temp sensor for the ECU and you should have a second temp sensor that is one wire on the water neck that is for the temp guage. I am more surprised you didnt get a check engine for the senor not being plugged in. it should have set off a code. If you need to check codes you can jump the E1 and TE1 connectors in the engine bay obd1 port or the one under the driver foot well.
@petescarport4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up. Yes I did have a check engine light but also don't have any cats and running straight out of headers. So I figured check engine was already on for that.

I don't guess you'd know right off why my battery light stays on? I've replaced the alternator, battery, checked and cleaned connections, big main battery fuse is new, and the car never has voltage or drain issues that I've noticed. I mean while driving it's on but no other issue.
@cielosnegro3 жыл бұрын
@@jewwyjones9760 First thing I would do is take the vehicle to a parts store to make sure the alternator you replaced is not defective. I don't remember since I haven't had this issue for quite some time, but I think some auto parts stores can test your charging system if not you can take the alternator off and have them test it on its own. I have seen many new or refurbished alternator fail right out of the box. If you do go to get it tested have them test you battery in case it is defective. On older vehicles you can remove the positive battery terminal from the battery and if the car shut it it was a good indication the alternator was not producing sufficient volts or amperage as it should be able to produce enough V and AMP at idle to stay running assuming you dint have a big load on the charging system like having AC or radio and headlights on. In 12v systems a car should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts this can easily be tested with a volt meter. The other thing you need to figure out is the amperage. even if you have 13.5+ volts but you do not have the proper amperage at the designated rpm your alternator wont charge the battery or in some cases will have just enough to keep the car running. Newer vehicles also have the alternator controlled by the ECU, which send a signal to the alternator telling it when there is a heavy load and need more juice this is done for fuel efficiency. If that's he case trace connector with several wires and make sure they are not frayed, corroded, or have a break somewhere. Make sure the connector is pushed all the way in. You will know once you hear or feel a click. Make sure the positive battery cable is properly tightened, doesn't have corrosion, or any type of damage follow it to the battery or whatever juncture it leads to. Make sure the connections on your batter or juncture are not loose, by that I mean that even if you have tightened the battery connector to where it will not go any tighter try to wiggle the connectors make sure they have no play. check the Negative battery cable for any corrosion and follow it to where it connects to the chassis for its ground make sure it is not loose there and without corrosion. Some cars have separate fuse and relays for the alternator and its also doesn't hurt to check and see if there is any damage to your main fuse if you have one. The last thing I would check is the V belt or serpentine, which ever you have and make sure it is not loose or slipping, as this will also cause you alternator to not function properly. If you have an SC the other thing to look out for is the ECU they have been know to fail as capacitor in them seem to blow with age and will cause erratic behavior from them, you can pull it out of the passenger foot well and disconnect it from the harness once you do that you can remove the top cover off by removing the screws that hold it in place, you can immediately tell when a capacitor is blown, they leak fluid or it has a really bad odder. I had this issue with my ECU and it smelled akin to cat urine.

@@cielosnegro thank you for your reply and advice! I own a factory 5 speed SC300 and an SC400 which both need alot of attention. Not sure why I've always loved these things. Had hoped to put a legit 1 or 2 jzgte but the engine prices have more than doubled the past few years.

@@jewwyjones9760 These car are great. I am currently getting the bottom end built, and replacing the w58 with a CD009. Like you I have wanted to put a 1z/2j gte but with prices skyrocketing its much easier to build a stock GE. You can find complete engine at the junyard for 300-400 if you are willing to forgo piston oil squirters, or you pay a good machine shop to drill and tap the factory location to add them.
