I haven’t missed a Leafs game this year and apparently Vesey plays for us....or so Im told
@whoopass2rb3 жыл бұрын
It's funny, I watch Vesey and I'm just like: I'm not unhappy with his results because I don't expect much but I'm also not impressed because he's just there. I realize he's been 2nd / 3rd line to this point. I feel like he'd excel at the 4th line (big body, decent defensively, applies pressure offensively) so maybe he's just miscast (we'll see next game if he stays 4th line). Then after saying that I remember we're missing Simmonds and Thorton, which would normally slot on the 2 open wing slots on line 1 & 2, pushing Mikheyev to the 3rd line with Kerfoot and Hyman* (Hyman could easily be #1 line and Simmonds #3 and Thorton #2 or mix it all up). All that to say, Vesey would normally be a 4th liner and maybe that's why I'm just meh but not upset at his performance.
@coltukkor3 жыл бұрын
@@whoopass2rb Yet with a full lineup to start the season he played his way from the second line down to the fourth despite multiple forward injuries.Id say its more a representation of Toronto depth than anything.The only thing keeping him on this team is the fact that Toronto keeps winning.
@whoopass2rb3 жыл бұрын
@@coltukkor It's funny how much a week of games can affect your view point. I do agree with your point about depth but it's just a case of Vesey might not be good enough for this team. Vesey I think needs to be in a 3rd line role to excel at the game, 4th line minutes is not working for him. But he's no where near good enough to be in that role compared to other players on this team. And his lack of functional use on the PP or that he's #5 or #6 for the PK (Hyman, Marner, Spezza for faceoffs, Mikheyev, Engvall) really make him a weak point. Steve made a great point some time ago that when you play 4th line minutes, you have to bring something more to the special teams game if you want to have a permanent spot on the team. When you look at Toronto's makeup right now, our 4th line in and out has been: Spezza (PP, PK), Boyd (PP, PK), Engvall (PK), Petan (PP) and then Barabanov, Vesey who look like odd men out. We also still have Galchenyuk (not sure what to expect there) and Sabourin (don't expect much here). Let's not forget Nick Robinson too. I think a full healthy team has the following in the top 9: JT, Marner, Matthews, Simmonds, Hyman, Nylander, Thorton, Kerfoot, Mikheyev. Then your 4th line is likely Spezza, Boyd, Engvall, with them all having the opportunity to move up throughout the lineup if needed. I just think that gives you a better chance to win which makes Vesey an odd man out when we're back to a healthy team. I have nothing against Vesey and he's definitely a serviceable player. Just on this team, it's really starting to look like he is the 13th - 14th forward. I actually think, on the circumstance, Petan has a better shot of being put in (he's the true 13th forward). And with Galch here now, or if Robinson ever gets another chance, Vesey moves down that number bar. It's a good problem to have - this team is really good.

@@mycrease8936 I agree. I have advocated for that all year. JT, Marner and Hyman as the 2 line would be awsome. Mathews doesn't need Marner and would be fine with Nylander. Is Marner and Matthews better than Nylander and Mathews, of course. But only by a little. But Marner and Tavares is waaaaaaay better than Nylander and Tavares. Also before watching this I was thinking man it would be great if Hyman could play with JT and Willy and someone can step up with Austin and Mitch. Welcome back Jumbo! Perfect timing.
@whoopass2rb3 жыл бұрын
I saw the play you're talking about and it wasn't a legal hit as I don't think Boyd had the puck. That said I'm not sure it was much of a hit so much as a "rub out" which still could be interference. I actually think he got a bit of an elbow to the face at first but when the camera came back across, it showed him grabbing his shoulder so I suspect it's just the angles we saw it live at and no other attention was really given to the play to assess appropriately.

On Kerfoot: I have noticed him quite a bit more this season than last and I have been impressed with his skating, forechecking and pk. Nylander: no one is doubting his talent level, but watching him give up pucks or detour 8 feet out of the way of Anderson to avoid contact is maddening. He does some amazing things on the ice, but he just doesn't seem effective unless he has a babysitter out on the ice with him. He needs to play on a line with Rick Tocchet or Cam Neely. He's a completely different player without Simmonds.

IMO you don't take Hyman off the line. The only reason I can think of, just to play the advocate, would be that the line is so good and natural (ie. not needing as many reps to build/keep chemistry), you want as little "tape" on it as possible, therefore you only pull it out when it matters the most (ie.
