White privilege wasn't passed around to EVERY one of us. I was born in a ghetto apartment complex in Savannah Ga, moved from there to a trailer and my brother and myself shared a bedroom that had a hole in the floor that we had to keep a board over to make sure neighborhood animals didn't come inside. We regularly showered at the hotel my mother worked at because our power/water/gas was cut off. Not only did I eat peanutbutter out of the jar I ate government peanutbutter out of that tub that had 5 inches or oil that you had to stir like cement. I've eaten mayo sandwiches, drank powdered milk and even had my fair share grilled cheese sandwiches made out of government cheese (delicious though). Bologna sandwiches on the regular (fried) usually. We was turned down for government assistance on numerous occasions because we were white. Mom ended up working 2 jobs, dad was an alcoholic and drug addict. Basically it's not about black/white/brown, poor comes in all colors and so does struggle. I can tell you first hand that white privilege means jack shit in a trailer park. White privilege starts at middle class.

Damn bro I feel you, I was born in garden city and my dad left when I was five. So I live with my mom and two grandparents in a double wide. Mom working 100hrs a week, grandpa workin 12 hr shifts at the paper mill and grandma’s retirement checks really help out lol. Luckily I’m half Native American so I’m able to get in some programs n shit😂😂.

I would get cops pulling me over when I went to my grandmothers house which was a ghetto area. I would get hell all the time. Tell me "what are you doing in this fine neighborhood? Thats a nice car . What are you up to? I told him not everyone else with a nice car is selling drugs. I worked hard for my car. I have lost jobs to affirmative action hear of that. A company of a certain size has to have soo many minorities and not the best qualified for the job. I can't go get free college or grants. There are no special organizations or help for me. If I start a organization for helping white people struggling I would be deemed as a racist. I have had some of those happen to me.

I just want to add my piece to this civil discussion because its rare on the internet to exchange viewpoints without it turning into an argument of any sort. I'm 26 and white and grew up in borderline poverty. Over half my childhood was spent in a 5th wheel trailer with no power and no running water outside of a hose close to the trailer. It was me, my older sister, and my mother. My mom would wake up an hour before we had to be up and boil water on the camping stove outside so we could take warm baths before school. I'm now 26 years old and just purchased my first home with my wife. No cosign, no inheritance, just hard work. Nothing was ever handed to me, but I don't think that's what "white privilege" means. I don't think anyone white would truly know if they've had "white privilege" because it's just our reality. I had many opportunities presented to me that I was able to take advantage of and get out of my situation. If other minorities aren't getting the same opportunities than there is inherently a privilege in being white. Maybe if I were Latino or Black I would've never gotten these chances and would still be stuck in a trailer. The topic is so subjective that I don't think it's justified to say it 100% exists or 100% doesn't.

It makes perfect sense! I grew up poor and white. I wish sometimes I had peanut butter to eat from the jar. Try eating crab apples and strawberries from your back yard. My white "friends" were not allowed to hang out with me. Black friends were always there to hang. I'm not complaining though, it shaped me into who I am today. Of we watch those around us who are successful, white or black, male or female, Hispanic or Asian, and learn what we can do to be successful, anyone can get to that point. With courage and determination anything is possible. Above all we need to be thankful to the one true God, who has guided us and let us have trials. Without him, nothing is possible. The way I put it to someone once was this: yes, on average, there are advantages to being a white person in this country. Sad but true. Unjust, but true. Thing is, you can't assume that skin color is the only thing affecting the life of the white guy -- or the black guy, for that matter. There is eventually a point where the other disadvantages -- how much money you got, your education level, whether or not you're disabled, and so on -- just nullifies any benefit you get from skin color. When you grew up in poverty, having to make constant decisions regarding whether to put food on the table or go to the doctor to see about this sickness you've been suffering from for a month and a half, you don't feel all that freaking privileged. I have asked people before, who do you think has more privilege: a homeless white man who sleeps in a cardboard box behind a dumpster in an alley, or a black millionaire Congressman who owns businesses and lives in a mansion and whose kids go to private schools. You would not believe the mental gymnastics some of these people go through in order to try and say the white homeless guy is still more privileged than the millionaire black guy.

Best full life anyone can have is growing up poor with good parents, working your ass off, then coming into some money in their mid to late 20s. Kids who grow up rich don't experience real life and I kinda feel bad for them. Growing up I hated being put to work at 9 years old. 100 degrees outside and I was the kid in the neighborhood doing hard labor helping put a new damn roof on my house... I HATED my parents for making me do that kinda shit but now that I'm an adult I'm so thankful they raised me that way

I grew up in Appalachia. My town is in the top ten poorest and most drug addicted people in the us.... My dad taught me to brush with baking soda. We always made things work. It taught me sooo much. I can fix anything in a house.

My Dad and mom left me and my brother with my Grandparents. I saw my dad once at Christmas and I saw my mother maybe once every 2 months or maybe once a month if she wasn't chasing a high. My dad nor my mother paid child support so my Grandparents had to take the full load of raising, clothing, feeding, school supplies, doctors visits, dentist visits, medication and everything else that goes with having a child. So we didn't have any privilege. We had a garden and we were taught from a young age how to hunt, fish and grow a garden. One thing that has stuck with me all these years. My Grandfather said never borrow anything from anyone no matter if it's money or a tool, because if you can't afford to buy it you don't need it. He said if their is something you really want save your money and you will have a better appreciation for it.

My grandpa and uncle couldn’t read or write but they worked in a factory and until they retired in their 60’s . They had no privilege, weren’t rich but they kept their families fed and clothed even if most of their clothes were hand me downs from people. But just goes to show you it may not be easy but if you set your mind to it , just like you did that if you work hard you can rise above it . 🙏❤️

@8:49 My mother and father both are much older than me. My father is 70 and my mother is younger than him, but her mom raised all her brothers and sister alone in Camden. If you know Camden you know its pretty rough out there. Listen to Mir Fontane he has a song about it. Life wasn't good for them but they really did all they could to make my sister and my life better. Growing up I was able to understand and appreciate what they did for their kids. All that work was for my sister and I, and we love that. To hear you say "we brushing our teeth with baking soda" i had to laugh cause she told me to do that if you run out, " we used to do it all the time". My dads family were italian immigrants so their life was full of racial prejudice, hardship and poverty due to immigration, too. Luckily his mother and father did well for them and he was able to grow from there and now hopefully my sister and I can grow from here. Rappers always say "I cant take my money when i die" but what about the future generation that is going to carry your name? Dont you care about them? That stuff bothers me a lot personally and I am so grateful my parents cared about us.

Man, I love listening to your reactions. I was raised poor white trash, and when you mentioned the peanut butter I almost fell off the couch! I ate so much peanut butter that I couldn’t even consider a peanut butter cookie or Reese’s for over a decade. Pork and beans out of the can, well, pretty much anything out of the can, 20 cent Mac and cheese with no milk (it still tastes okay). Government cheese was the best! We’d count our pennies and carry them to the day old bread store to get a discount loaf of bread (we used to freeze bread when we had any leftovers) and I’d make the most delicious baked cheese sandwich in the world. Velveeta has nothing on government cheese! Keep up the good work. You’re a great entertainer. 😊

Thank you for saying what you did my friend! I am right there with you. I am white but grew up in a very poor neighborhood and household. I have totally done laundry in the bathtub with dish detergent or whatever we could find as you said, hanging it out the window, off the porch, or anywhere else cause we didn't have a clothesline. Learning how to fix your car cause you couldn't afford a mechanic, or walking to catch a bus cause you had to wait for a few paychecks to pay to fix your car.
