"Racist" wasn't a word which was bandied about casually, but when it was used it generally meant that the person it was directed towards actually _was_ a racist. It's the conclusions that are, and that's why the stereotypes get hit. For example; sub-saharan people are at the bottom of every society on the planet, vastly overrepresented in crime. Many of those sub-saharan countries have the average IQ that would make Forrest Gump a genius there. These facts would lead to some pretty rational but racist conclusions that go against the idea that race is only skin-deep. I mean, no one wants to wind up where we have to say we simply can't integrate certain populations because they are incapable of the complexities of modern society, but at the same time, if you pretend this isn't the case and all people are equal and only culture determines outcomes, then you wind up with large numbers of these populations in western nations, who will never achieve parity with the native populations nor fully assimilate, as well as lowering the average quality and success on the nation overall.

Here in Richmond BC just outside of Vancouver there is a huge Chinese population. The province of BC gives you little letter "L" s for learner and a letter "N" for new driver that you put on the back of your car roughly around the size of two playing cards. Nobody can say Asians don't have a sense of humor because the one Chinese malls sells little letter Cs that resemble those government issued letters with the word Chinese written on the bottom instead of new or learner as a warning to people that a Chinese person is driving the car😂 Even they joke about how bad of drivers they are even though it's a stereotype.

Webster's dictionary defines the word racist as having, reflecting, or fostering the belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that RACIAL DIFFERENCES PRODUCE AN INHERENT SUPERIORITY OF A PARTICULAR RACE. We should embrace each other's differences and learn from them. To avoid not coming across as racists, we should never sweep them under the rug and act as if they don't exist. In my country we are predominantly white and watermelons are very popular and loved. Honestly, I don’t get why smth would be considered racist to say if it’s associated with the culture of people who come from the same place and have similar habits. Just because you know it’s common with that group doesn’t make it racist. Like France is known for the patisserie, wine and cheese, Italy-pizza and pasta, why would you consider that not ok to say for any country. Racism is hate towards a group of people because of their race and considering them lesser, not a perception of their cultural heritage. Of course, not all people share the same tastes for example, even when they come from the same place, but it’s not racist to point the things most of them like.

I’m from Australia and as a kid EVERYONE ate watermelon . Mind you, I m a gen X originally from a rural area and most people I knew grew some sort of fruit and vegetables . Watermelon was a tough plant with few pests and easy to grow, so the majority of people grew it or knew someone that did so you’d get them for free. The fact that it celebrates their victory over the French in 1862 is also why it isn't celebrated in Mexico, because the French returned a year later in 1863 and conquered the country, installing a Hapsburg monarch as Maximillian I, Emperor of Mexico. Not that he lasted long once the French troops went home. Maximillian was deposed and executed by firing squad only four years later, and the Mexican Republic was reinstated. For reference, Mexican Independence Day is September 16, and the Day of the Dead is November 1.

It's more than likely a reflection of the difference between relying on a public defender (who is overloaded with cases) and a private attorney representation. If you think 10% is something, the difference between men and women is men serving 62% longer sentences, and women are multiple times more likely to get a commuted sentence, probation only, or house arrest than men (yes this accounts for same crimes, same criminal histories, etc). In a way that's positive discrimination for women, seeing them as frail creatures so have pity on them. But it works vastly in their favor so you'll never hear a feminist bring it up.

Also, don't forget about recidivism. A lot of times, a harsher penalty will be handed down to a person who has been convicted multiple times for multiple crimes. That usually adds on some time to the sentence.

Yeah the whole thing is really confusing. Basically the French invaded Mexico to make it part of the French Empire around the Napoleonic era. Very shortly after winning the war, the French announced a new emperor of Mexico, pulled all the armies back to Europe, then the Mexicans overthrew the French government. Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of a town winning a battle in a war that they lost against an enemy who despite winning, still lost.

For the watermelon one, I had come to the conclusion that it was wrong because I associate watermelons with the rural South, where there's dry heat that the juicy fruit would help with, and I expect most black people to be more concentrated in Northern cities, away from the optimal places to grow or enjoy it. Also, I have already read about where the "black people love watermelons" stereotype came from. Back in the Civil War era, free black people often made a living by growing and selling watermelons, and this lead to the fruit being a symbol of the abolition of slavery. Black people loved them in the way homosexuals love rainbows. It would be corrupted by the association between watermelons and uncleanliness (because watermelons are a rather messy fruit to eat), and this would lead to it becoming a negative stereotype.

I knew about the weave because my Mom is a hairdresser and can identify when someone has real or fake hair (back when everyone was questioning President Trump's hair I admitted that I wondered if it was real too and she said it was because you can look at the scalp where the hair meets and tell); she's also told me that African American hair is notoriously difficult to work with and that many prefer to keep it shaved and go with wigs instead. I knew about Cinco de Mayo too because we usually celebrate it by going to a local Mexican restaurant staffed by Hispanics--we asked them once if it was a big holiday in Mexico and they laughed and told us it was a gringo holiday. Still a good excuse to eat Mexican. XD As for the watermelon thing...well color me black because I love watermelon. XD Also the 'stereotypical black food' makes me laugh because it isn't--it's stereotypical *Southern* food, just about everyone down south eats it.

I love this game! Matt is making an incredible point here. This is not Facts vs Racism, this is Facts vs Prejudice. Prejudice being an opinion formed without experience or reason. All of these people made mistakes from a place of ignorance and can learn from those mistakes. Everyone is prejudiced in some way. It's not a bad thing, it's a state of being. Until you have first hand experience, you don't have a solid grasp on the situation and have to make assumptions based on other information. To make a bad example, if all you watched was crime movies depicting black men as thugs and gangsters and never met a black man in person, you'd be prejudiced to believe all black men act that way. You've been given no other frame of reference making you very prejudiced. Your opinion should change from what you see in movies to a more real to life opinion based on personal experiences. That's how we grow. And every culture has it with other cultures. Every assumption you make is built on prejudice. If we want to call that all racism, then everyone is racist. But that waters down the term racist/racism and makes it meaningless. This is one big issue I have with the left right now. They want to use the most sensationalized words to bring an emotional response instead of other more appropriate words all why crying WORDS MATTER. Clearly words don't matter if you want to use the most inflammatory words incorrectly all the time to bring an emotional response.
