Unfortunately it is very hard to know as only time will tell. Because of that I would recommend older TV's like some of the 2013 4k TVs from Sony we very rarely see come in for repair or some of the Vizio 4k P series from 2018 and 2019, it's rare to see those come in for repair and they are of good quality.

I had a Vizio in their early years....I believe 2010-2012 model and we just got rid of it towards the end of 2023 not because of malfunction but because our toddler cracked the screen. It worked flawlessly all those years without any hiccups 😢

Jason, Thank you for watching, glad you liked he content. Yeah I like plasma sets, I know they got a bad marketing rap but they were the king of TVs. I still have a Samsung PN64F8500 plasma TV at home as my primary TV. It just has better quality than the 4k ultra high end Sony set I had before which was the XBR-65X930C. I actually got ride of the 4k sony and put an older plasma instead since it had better quality picture. The colors and blacks are just better on plasma. I could spend close to $2,000 on a new OLED TV but I don't see the need since the only difference between my plasma and an OLED is the OLED is 4K. There is just to little 4k content out there, and sometimes when I did find the 4k content with the Sony TV, the TV would downgrade the picture to 1080 otherwise it would have buffering issues and need to pause the show or movie. But even without that issue, 4k with normal LED TV contrast doesn't beat 1080P with plasma good contrast.
@lovemadeinjapan9 ай бұрын
They are, but the are unmatched when it comes to IQ for your money and input ports in 2024. You usually get 3x SCART, 4x HDMI, wide colour gamut (P3), great motion and blacks for like 20-50 bucks. No LCD TV comes close below 500€, and even for OLED it is tough to beat.

Hey Nick. Great video thanks. I have this model LG with this same symptom. I have disconnected the main board from PS, disconnected the LVDS ribbon from the logic board and jumped the two resistors. The color pattern test works. I am hoping that it's a 100% probability that the problem is the main board but I'm guessing that may not be the case? Is there anything else I can do to test the main board now or should I just go for it and replace the main board and have a good confidence that will fix it?

Hey Joe, I already replied to your email and saw you found out in the end that the same issue had in fact occured to your TV as well. I wanted to take the opportunity to point out to everyone as well that this is going to be a common fault and it will be rare the mainboard is actually the issue, almost alwasy with these types of symptoms you will find out the power supply is the cause.

Pls can you elaborate on the jumper cable i.e is it your idea or LG documented repair tip to get test pattern.Pks excuse my ignorance.
@NicksTVRepair Жыл бұрын
This is most definitely not something I came up with. Shorting out those two points simply triggers the Logic board to create a color test pattern. This is a program built into the Logic board so that you can remove the mainbaord from the set for troubleshooting purposes. This way if everything works with the mainboard removed you can confirm the fault is with the mainboard and vice versa, if the color pattern test doesn't appear, then you know the mainboard is not the cause of the fault.

When you check the other boards, do you keep the jumper on the logic board or do you connect the main board back?
@NicksTVRepair6 ай бұрын
If using the jumper allows the color pattern test to come up and the color pattern test stays on without any issues, then there is no need to keep checking bords since you have confirmed the mainboard is the fault. However, if the color pattern test doesn't come up, then there is no need to keep the jumper in there as it won't do anything for you at that point.

Hello, great video. I have the same issue with a Jan. 2010 LG 50PJ350=UB Plasma TV. The power supply is brand new and so are the X-sus Y-sus boards brand new and their buffer boards also. It's just making a clicking with a small red light blinking on the main board. I'm now thinking it's a bad main or logic board. How do I determine which is bad? There's not much more to replace now. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Do the color pattern test. Are you able to get it? If yes then replace the mainbaord, if no then one of the "new" boards you got is bad, most likely the power supply just like in the video.

Sorry unfortunately the information you provided doesn't help me. What board are you referring to? Can you tell me the name of it? Can you provide me with the part number of the board in question? Is the noise coming from that board or is it coming from somewhere else and the only link is the blinking light is occurring at the same time as the noise. If you disconnect the speakers from the TV does the noise go away? If yes then use external speakers and see if that resolves the issue. If the noise does not go away then most likely whichever board the noise is coming from is about to fail and should be replaced.

I got a free Zenith Z50PT320 plasma which is made by LG, the voltages are ok, the TV stays on with the Y sus unplugged, found multiple shorted parts on that board, how likely is it that the buffer boards are bad? They are pricey, If I can't repair this TV with a few new parts its not getting fixed.
@NicksTVRepair11 ай бұрын
I am sorry I don't have a how to test a buffer board video available. But it's an easy check with the multimeter. You use the back of the buffer IC's with one lead and then swipe the connectors with the other. I understand this explanation is impossible to visualize and a video would make more sense. I couldn't find any video that did it in a way that was universal, all of them seeemed somewhat specific to a brand or type of buffer but you can check out other youtubers and just type in "How to test buffer board" and it should bring a few different ways to check.

Make sure to provide your model and a full list of symptoms/what's been done so far and we can maybe help you from there. If it requires high-level soldering or troubleshooting, then you can send your circuit board to our repair shop and we can fix it for you. Sorry unfortunately with the information provided I can't help you. It's possible your Buffer boards are bad, it's possible your Y-sustain went out. Disconnect the Y-sustain, and plug the set back into power. Does the clicking still continue? No, then your Y-sustain is your fault. Clicking still continues, keep the Y disconnected, and now also disconnect the Z-sustain. Same thing, clicking stops? If yes then Z-sus is the fault. No then disconnect the mainboard next. And as Sherlock Holmes famously once said "Sir jeanious2009, when you have eliminated both the sustain boards and mainboard, then only your power supply remains, however improbable, must be the fault.

Are the lines vertical or horizontal? Do the lines appear if you run the color pattern test? If no then you may have a mainboard fault. If yes, then maybe one of the buffer boards is bad if it's horizontal lines and could be a panel fault if they are vertical.

This rules out the mainboard then from being the fault if everything was done properly as you should have gotten the color pattern test. If you get good voltage output from the power supply on the VS and VA then it means either your Ysus, Zsus, buffers, or Logic board are at fault. narrowring it down from there will be a bit more difficult. I had a man with one he wanted to fix it, I actually found a service manual for it. He wasn't comfortable enough with my knowledge. Repair shops want a fortune to fix it. I know I could, but hes too attached to it. I might burn up his baby. I may have failed at fixing some but I never destroyed one by letting out the magic smoke. @NicksTVRepair10 ай бұрын
Haha I have heard that before. My LED's went out on my plasma. What is the model of the unit? Just like in this video, we often see that type of fault be due to cracked solder joints. However the cracked joints aren't always on the power supply, sometimes they are on the Y or Z sustain. Often I check transformers, and any component that is screwed into a heatsink or shares a pad with a component that is screwed into a heatsink as that is where all the heat is and the most likely area there will be a cracked joint.

Found this and was so excited the issue would be this easy, but alas - I found no cracked solders. I even popped off the YSUS and ZSUS with everything looking fine. No burst or swelled capacitors that I can see. I have a 60PA6550, but my issue is slightly different. Will power on and get picture and video. After maybe 10 min, it clicks and the power cuts out. Turn the TV back on (from the remote) - no screen, but sound. If I leave the TV off say 20-30 min, it will power on with audio/video. It could go hours working fine and I turn it off for the night, or it will go 10 minutes....CLICK. Powered off. Power on. No video but sound. Thoughts of what could be "tripping it to power off" and no video but audio when powering it right back on. Short on the main board??? In fact, it literally just did it while typing this comment!!! No signal was cycling on the screen and then powered off. Red light on the main board dark. Was on 10 min or so.

This TV is utter rubish, even when fixed. It is nowhere near a Panasonic Viera from the same time. These plasma's have horrible banding, image persistance and bad colour calibration out of the box. Also full white the output gets greatly truncated so full white will look very dim. If you consider getting a plasma for gaming or watching film, never get an LG.

No audio is usually best fixed by using an external sound system. Often the internal speakers on a TV are mediocre, this is usually the best opportunity to upgrade your set with a sound bar or sound system. I would first check to make sure your headphone and or optical ports work and if they don't you can always use a receiver, plug in your devices into it, extract the sound first, and then have the video run to the TV.
