I don't know if they will but I wish that companies were held at higher standards for how long their products work. I feel like 5 year manufacturer warranty should be the bare minimum. Yeah it will increase the cost of the TVs upfront, but in the long term it actually will cost less since you won't need to replace your TV as often.

I believe this model of TV was recalled in other countries for overheating. Just not yet recalled in the USA. My 55' CX had the same problem and it was a defective dried up and crusty thermal pad, between the CPU and vapor chamber, that was the point of failure. 'Causing an overheating shutdown.

Would it be useful, when buying a new TV set, to add proper extra thermal pads on specific components such as processors and microcontrollers, graphics chipsets (GPUs), power supply modules (MOSFETs, voltage regulators, etc.), memory (RAM), for example, if there weren't any, just to preserve in the longer term? What's your opinion?
@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 4 ай бұрын
Yes this seems to be the case with every single one of these mainboards we have worked on so far. The thermal pad is very dried up and crusty.
@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 4 ай бұрын
Yes and no. I think it depends on the manufacturing company. For example that thermal pad we add on the back of the mainboard, is something that Sony always does on their high-end XR series TV sets. Because of that it is very rare to see a processor fail in a Sony TV. However, we do see issues with the eMMC chips they use which are made by Samsung a lot of the time (maybe sabotage lol). So for Sony TVs, it's already done and also because we rarely see processor failures even if it wasn't done I would say there is no need. Maybe because most of their sets have 2 processors instead of 1 processor handling everything. For LG sets we do often see processors fail and they never have that thermal pad below to help dissipate heat. So for an LG set I would advise adding a thermal pad below the mainboard yes for sure worth it. If they have 2 processors one being a GPU then both should get that extra thermal pad yes. The UF series was one that very much needed that. Vizio has been adding those thermal pads for their TV sets, but they still also have lots of processor failures. I don't know why that is although I do have a hunch that is based purely in speculation so I won't share it. For those, realistically having a fan in there would be the best way to upgrade it although that is more advanced for sure. I do know that the next iteration that LG made for the next years TV sets LG added a copper plate between the CPU and the heatsink to try and have better heat transfer between the die of the CPU and the heatsink.

On the vapor chamber. How did you remove the blue plastic parts supported by a spring? First time messing around with a tv but I have tinkered with pcs in the past. I have just never seen those blue plastic pieces so I can lift the chamber and apply a fresh set of thermal paste.
@Sarat_1

I was able to take apart the motherboard and squeeze the blue plastic tips behind it to pull from the other side. I applied the new paste, but now facing an issue where the tv won’t turn on 😱 I made sure all the slots were properly clicked in before closing everything back up… any ideas? I know the thermal paste before was littered everywhere and I was scrubbing aggressively… do you think I might have scratched something off that was not supposed to be scratched off?

@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair Ай бұрын
Yeah thermal paste alone doesn't always do it but in some cases it can. You just have to make sure you really clean off all of the old crusty thermal paste off so that the new paste can make good contact with the CPU die and heatink. Additionally having that large silicone thermal pad can be a big difference for heat extraction. With all that said usually a reflow is also required in a few cases, and in a lot, a new CPU especially if the heat stress damaged the chip.

How did you fix the mainboard? Do you have a reflow machine available? The freezing is only a very temporary fix so that you can confirm the fault and is not meant to be a repair. As for the pads you have to buy them usually at a 100 piece minimum order, and we get them from our suppliers overseas. Before I sell you one, it would make more sense to ensure the repair was done properly. Can you give me more information on how you did the repair?

@@NicksTVRepair oh, I cleaned the old thermal paste and added a new one. As of now, it's working well. Also, I noticed less heat on the back. The TV problem was it would turn on then after around 30 minutes to an hour it would start to flicker and turn off again and be in a loop. After researching, I believe it was overheating but no burn spots on anyone on the board since it has very low hours (1874) for a 2021 TV. But now it's been running since 7:24 am CST and it's now 927. But going to add that pad next when I ordered it.

Just to clarify so we are on the same page. Your mainboard comes stock with the black heatsink on the top of the processor. You have to of course send that black heatsink in with your mainboard for repair. The extra part we provide is the thermal pad on the bottom of the board. Now if you are purchasing a replacement board, then of course both will be provided with the board you purchase.

Thanks again Nick. Very interesting. So if I understand correctly, it may simply be a lack in the design of this model to dissipate the maximum amount of heat from the chip, just by adding a thermal pad, for long-term protection? On the other hand, if there are no more boards in stock, the TV must be a certain age already.

@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 4 ай бұрын
This is a 2020 model so it's just about 4 years old now. So I think that yes this issue would not be happening if they had a larger heatsink on the top of the board and a thermal pad on the bottom. Although I could be wrong and it's possible that they are also just having so much going on in terms of processing with the whole AI thing that it could be overstressing the CPU. Please keep in mind that I know nothing. Since we only started fixing these a few months ago, I have no idea how long my repairs will last. I know that we are putting in new CPUs I know that we are putting in high-end MX-4 thermal paste, and adding an extra cooling system via the thermal pad on the bottom. We actually just ordered some much larger thermal pads that are larger than the chip for extra heat extraction than the one used in the video. With that said I really don't know the long-term effect of those adjustments and of course won't know for a few years probably.

Sorry, I don't think that is a good idea. You don't use the same machine I do, and you don't have it in the same environment I do. My temperatures won't be correct for you. If you and I were both using the same machines in similar environments then yes that would make sense. But because I have a high confidence we don't, using our temp profile won't work for you. I highly recommend that you purchase some low-end cheap circuit boards online, maybe 10 of them or so that have BGA chips. They don't have to be the same as these but similar. Then practice removing them and installing them. As you do that tweak your heat settings top and bottom. I recommend you watch this video starting at around 4:27 or so and use that as your base. Then make your own adjustments from there: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goupcoSdgr5gqtEsi=MGOPfJ8yH80SWYuN&t=267

Holly Molly if I went to those temps the board would be completely destroyed for good. The highest temp we get to is 245c which just goes to show how different setups and equipment matter and require different temperatures to get to the solder melting point. So again, this reinforces that your profile, the heat temp you use on the bottom vs the top, and for how long and how quickly you ramp up to those temps all depend on your setup.

If your TV is still under warranty I highly recommend you have the TV serviced asap before it goes out of warranty. If it is already out of warranty which I would assume it is by now, then I wouldn't be able to tell you if this is a proper long-term solution but if you don't mind turning on a fan when you turn on the TV I would say to keep doing that and report back once it fails. I do have replacement mainboards for sale available, but I only have about 30 left before I am completely out of stock. Often a few people will have them on eBay but it's only 1 and they are of unknown quality, they could be already defective or near their end of life as most eBay sellers don't really know how to properly test the parts. The only company that has them still for sale is us at this time which won't last for much longer as we are more than halfway through our stock since we were able to get some for sale at the time the video was released.

That is a bit strange. I can't say I am as familiar with the C1 models even though the boards are similar. If you take a look at the back side of your mainboard, do you see a dark brown spot like we saw on this mainboard we fixed in the video? If yes this would confirm the mainboard is bad. If no, then it wouldn't be conclusive because the mainboard can fail without overheating the processor so it still could be the mainboard or something else. If you want to send in the mainboard we can test it and diagnose it, and if we can fix it we would charge the same price as the OLED55CXAUA since the repair will probably be the exact same.

The fault is most often with the mainboard and thus there is virtually no demand for power supply repairs. #2 If your power supply is at fault, you can purchase a replacement, whereas with the mainboards there are virtually no replacements available unless you are willing to spend $300 on a used board with no warranty and no idea how long it will last.

@@NicksTVRepair The only reason I suspected the power supply board is that I cleaned and reapplied heatsink paste to the processor, but the TV still turns off spontaneously.

Based on the symptoms you are experiencing it sure sounds like a mainboard failure. Applying new thermal paste is often not enough to fix the mainboard, typically some sort of soldering is required whether it is a reflow of the processor, reball, or replacement. If you don't want to send in your mainboard for repair, we do also have some for sale. Although not an infinite amount. If you want to purchase a replacement the ones we have right now come with a copper plate between the CPU and heatsink to further help heat transfer into the heatsink and that large silicone pad on the back of the board as shown in the video also to help cool the board further. Here is a link to the board for sale on our website: nickselectronics.com/products/oled65cxpua?variant=48668677243156

To me it sounds like you have a bad screen. If this is the case then it's not worth fixing. However I would highly recommend you get a second opinion from a local TV repair shop that can see the issue in person as apposed to my opinion being someone on the internet that hasn't even seen the TV.

I wish this wasn't true but unfortunately, it seems like these days any electronics really is only built to last a few years. It's really too bad. I really wish a company would step up and build a 15-year TV. A TV that is over-engineered, would cost a lot but would last you 15 years and would get updated once a year with new features but the hardware would be the same. You really don't need anything better than 4k. Honestly 8k and better for a TV is just a gimmick, already not everything is even in 4k. It's getting easier and easier to get 4k content but most content people watch is still in 1080P. I would pay 3 times the price for a TV that was built to last and had parts made available to repair it.

TV tech hasn't changed much in the last 10 years. I would argue it's gotten worst as the quality of the parts has degraded.
