LGB Mogul - Denver South Park and Pacific #5

In 1969, when I was seven years old, Mom and Dad took us to Radio City Music Hall to see "A Christmas Carol" (-froze our butts off!). We also took a walk through FAO Schwarz. Not only was it warm in there, but it put Santa's workshop to total shame! There were puppet theaters and 6 foot tall teddy bears and all sorts of extremes of toys for kids used to Hot Wheels and such. One thing that absolutely grabbed my eye was sectional railroad track on card packaging. It looked like HO but the rails were further apart than a seven year old's fist! I understood what I had seen, but not fully for maybe another ten years! When I got the chance, I bought the original LGB Mogul and have it to this day!

I first saw a really short section of LGB track hanging on the wall at Keith’s hobby shop. Just a 4 inch piece hanging on a hook. No idea what it was. I was into HO. But what is that!!?? Years later in the garden center there it was. 10 years later. About 1979.

-Then there came that time about ten years later I was in Polks. Polks was to hobbies what Schwarz was to toys! If somebody, somewhere in the world made a 25 foot RC aircraft carrier loaded with RC jet planes, Polks had TWO of them! They had an Aster live steam Shay I would gladly have sawn off my own arm to own. (This is why we don’t give teenage boys credit cards!). They did have the BASIC LGB starter set: little black 0-4-0, two mine cars, circle of track, no power pack. I saw it and tried to leave and forget it. It spoke to me though, and rumbled through my dreams! I started to realize, after 16 wonderful Christmases, I owed my parents. How is it I could pull my Yule-Tide weight, but contribute to the décor! YES! I would buy that starter set for around the tree! It was my DUTY as their son! So, a couple of pals and I took the LIRR to Penn Station. They wanted to go up the Empire State Building, but it was late and Polks would close before we got back to it, so I hauled that big box o’ trains in the elevator up 86 stories! (This is why we don’t let teenage boys get married, drive cars or hold elected office!).

That loco was main engine on our R & P Lumber Company layout that I had you take a look at on KZbin. It will run over some of the rockies track ever laid and keep on rolling along. Best little loco ever made.

I would let the 5 just run while I barbecued up a mess of garlic burgers 🍔. Now and then CRUNCH! And it would tip over and a snail would be cut right in half. Back on the track and back to the grill. I’ll bet I put 2 or 3 miles on it every time I cooked dinner!

Toy Man and Bride; It is a primal thing when talking about large scale trains. Very much like your experience I had a similar experience. It was back in the early nineties, 1990's, when in the Great American Train Store at a not so local mall I looked up over my head and there it was, what I knew I had to have. It was an LGB Forney and I knew I was head-over-heals in love with this not so tiny locomotive. With our tight household budget I knew it was impossible to ever own one. My deep dive into this world of large scale came when my best buddy gifted our family his collection of "G" gauge trains. The bug had struck hitting a sweet note of passion we began to build. Thank You so very much for bringing back those feelings. As always a top-notch episode.

Hi. Hope you guys are well. I had a show up on an Alison engine kit and thought naw. With Big Boy on the loose we need a locomotive 🚂. So we shot 3 shows on LGB moguls. Have you seen the LGB golden spike locomotives? Geeee. 10,000. Sure. Put in on my card! Sure hope Ed gets the Bug Boy ready. So much still to do!!! As of yesterday still no pistons! A bit taller than scale. Just higher off the track, not the locomotive it’s scale, but all the LGB stuff is higher so couplers can be mounted to the trucks and that looks toy like. Super fun look. But not all that scale. Bachman is more true to scale.

I read on Wikipedia, that 4 years after LGB released their American Mogul, was when Bachmann got into large scale with their Big Haulers train sets, you should look for a Bachmann 4-6-0 in large scale, it's based on an actual narrow gauge 4-6-0, Tweetsie Railroad #12 on the Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Yup! Upcoming shows. My first on was a Christmas close out at KMart. Whole train set. Radio control ten wheeler, flat car (can be seen in one of the shots in the back yard railroad behind #5) caboose, gondola car, plastic track, power poles, and a comic book. For 25 bucks. I bought one. Screwed around with it a while and went back and bought all rest of them. Killed LGB over time.

I purchased my first LGB in 1981 from a toy store in South Coast Plaza, Orange County, CA. It was a Christmas anniversary set consisting of a locomotive and two passenger cars, complete with circle of track and a transformer. Each of the pass. cars has a date of 1881 on the side at the left and 1981 at the right. LGB produced an additional passenger car for the next four years 1982, 83, 84 and 1985. I purchased each one.

Thanks for the history on this, I bought my first lgb as a kit for under Christmas tree when the kids were little in November 2006. When I pulled the train out for Christmas 2007 and tried to expand, there were just leftovers after the bankruptcy. Love the gauge but it seems that “G” scale has never really recovered and the information for LGB as it is today never seems to be more than rumors/here say.

Yup. The garden hobby was all but killed by the crash of 2008. But also the birth of On30. Many people changed to a cheeper scale. Oddly Bachman was totally into large scale but rolled out On30 to go with the Christmas villages that were popular. Running on their HO track so they didn’t need to spend a million on new track. But the little trains were a huge hit and ended up killing Bachman’s bread and butter large scale. People (like us) love these large models but few still run them.

Sadly no. No layout of any kind. But some bench work in. Some backdrop. 9 feet of track. About 500 ties.cut. Thousands of tie plates cast. Rail stockpiles. Some lighting. Soooooo much more to do. But having a ton of fun screwing around with building it.

I own an LGB 1:20.3 Mogul from the '90's (second-hand) and admittedly that little engine has some rather realistic weathering thanks to a few accidents it had. But, surprisingly, that little bugger is still chugging like it was just built.

A lot of layaways went into buying LGB locomotives during that time. The Mogul ,the mallet, a loco with sound and the Crocodile all excellent runners. Remember that the German mark was valued lower than the dollar. Track was cheep to get. Now, for the price of one 12" straight we could get a box of 12 pieces .

Price jumps around. When I bought my first LGB track it was about 8 bucks a foot. I bought their ties and aluminum rail for about a buck a foot. Adjusted fir inflation that’s about 5 to one so 40 per foot today. Price plunged. Mark went down and Bachman entered the market. I had 600 feet of track and 12 number 6 switches which cost 100 each. Geeezzzz. So I was about 1200 into track in 1989 money. For aluminum rail!!!

Dale, The other best loco they made was the little 0-4-0 Porter which still today is best running little engine ever built. This thing is true work horse.

It was the first Chinese locomotive they did to compete with Bachman. Rather than risk the LGB name they labeled it Lehmann. Big hit! I bought one to repaint and have fun with. So good I ran (relative expression, I never run) back to the hobby shop and bought 2 more. Will be a show at some point

What LGB had was German quality. I have the blue Lake Gorge and Boulder set and it still run like a Swiss watch. It's so quiet and smooth. Looks stupid though but I still love it! To bad I never got the matching powered tender.

The LGB stuff is absolutely fantastic and it’s build quality. The German Proto types really well done. The American prototypes are kind of a cartoon. But still really fun. I’m glad to see them back in the new ones seem to be mostly as good as the old ones

I don’t remember… they are brass.. Ozark has them in white metal. I THINK all my brass came from precision scale. They’re still in business and have an extensive catalog, but they don’t always have the stuff that that’s in there available. Haven’t looked at their website in a while, but look for precision scale, miniatures or precision scale, brass or something like that.

RE 1/20.3: Bachmann has stopped any future production of any new 1/20.3 models. Aside from Accucraft now, 1.20.3 is pretty much dead. Trouble was that although it was scale accurate to the track gauge the vast majority of trains and cars around since 1984 were either 1/22.5 or 1/24, people were not ready to pull up long established layouts to make room for the new scale. Also it took Bachmann a long time to issue 1/20.3 freight cars, and never did any passenger cars meaning passenger rolling stock was limited to the much more expensive Accucraft So only brand new layouts and a small handful of true believers were willing to rebuild and buy into the correct scale because often almost everything had to be upgraded and expanded for the bigger trains. This was demonstrated by the Bmann K-37, it was darn near ride-on big enough. Sales were less than anticipated, then in 06 China started having fits and raised manufacturing prices on everything, then on top of that in 08 the recession hit and really clobbered the large scale market, and it has never recovered, a full 10 years since everything hit the fan in 08.

I still like the 1/2 inch stuff. Sure the gauge is wrong.. but at the glance you don't notice. But the trains are big enough to be easy to run and work on and be great looking, but small enough to have a layout. And lots of 1/2 inch dollhouse stuff. The C16 I show in the video is a great little model.

Hi! I have always run Colorado narrow gauge. For whatever reason my 1:22.5 is mostly colorado and southern. My 1/2 inch is all D and RGW. And my 1:20.3 is all over the place. Mostly D and RGW but also Rio Grande Southern and Eureka and Palisades, Carson and Lake Tahoe and others. Have lots of locomotives cause I juts that way. Lots of 1/2 inch scale rolling stock. It’s taken karyn and I a couple of years just to open boxes and figure out what’s here. I think we now have it figured out. But never sure. I still half expect to find an unopened box with several missing models in it.

Hi. Model railroad locomotives sure. But if you are looking for a basic static plastic model there are a few in 1/48 scale. But not large like there. I only know of 3 kits in large scale and all are standard gauge. If HO scale works Metal Earth has several locomotive kits. But one is classic colorado narrow gauge. All are really HARD to build. You would want to build several of their easy kits first. Hard to find is the 1/48 scale porter from Japan. If you can find one on EBay. Hello I’m new to your channel and I’m coming back to this hobby again and yesterday I bought a (used) 2-6-0 mogul locomotive it ran great out of the three and it looked better out of the three. When I bought it, I asked the gentleman about if I can run it on a four foot turn radiance curve. He looked at me like my hair was on fire. So my question is. Can I run my mogul on four foot curve or do I have to run it on a five foot curve?

Trigger The Wolf I’m pretty sure it will go around the 5 foot. I had 6 foot on my railroad and the wye was only 4 foot. And I never had a problem. But I rarely used the wye. It was a way to go round the upper loop without heading out on the 400 foot long main. I think you are fine. Not totally sure

Toy Man Television I’m guessing I’m a bit worried about it because. This is my first LGB locomotive I’ve bought, I want to make it last and hopefully pass it down to my kids some day in the future. So you would recommend a six foot curve out of the five because A LOT of guys where telling me it will put a lot of stress on the locomotive in the turns and cause damage to the bearings to the drive wheels.

They are always a bit toy like. But super fun. I have about 50 large scale locomotives. But the 3 I mostly ran were these. And a delton bus with batteries and radio control. Because they always worked.
