New information!!!!!!! Annie is short for anniversary. The locomotive I said was spectrum was not. It was the anniversary edition. Almost spectrum quality. But the Annie name has stuck. All the 10 wheelers are called Annie. But really it’s just the really great anniversary train. Over one million of these 10 wheelers sold over 20 years. Now over 30 years.
@GrumpSkull5 жыл бұрын
Apparently, for a short time the improved Anniversary 4-6-0 was sold under the Spectrum range. You can spot the early cheaper 4-6-0s from sets because they have huge rivets on the smokebox. I think the later improved Anniversary 4-6-0s which are now in the Big Hauler range are similar quality to the 1:20.3 Spectrum range with metal details etc and 5th, 6th generation gear boxes. The latest ones have metal gears but much more expensive than they once were due to the metal gears and smaller production runs.

I have a few of the cheap rc bachman460 and I have modded a couple for myself.and then I have just a stock green first gen rc and my grandson loves it he has his very own little layout in the backyard that runs right along the side of my layout which is still under construction.With the awsome help with my little 5yr old grandson.Yes I agree the green version rc 460 isn't the best by far but to be able to get my grandson involved that's all I really care about.Sure I could save a few bucks and buy much nicer steam locos but for the time being the mods I make like fitting Lipo batteries and modding the electrical boards very careful I might add we have a blast to see who can hook up the most cars some flat cars with loads and see who can pull the most with them.Keep in mind we are not professionals by any means but with some research we have some pretty decent cheap RC 460s that are just fun to play with but for me seeing my grandson getting into the hobby and seeing him smile and use his little imagination makes my day.even us old guys can learn a lot from a youngster with a awsome imagination.

That is a fascinating bit of toy train history. Bachmann has gotten a ton of people involved with model railroading and there is nothing wrong with that. My first N-scale was Bachmann with their introduction of Uni-track. I put a double track Sante Fe Mikado and Sante Fe SD-40 pair pulling freight around a large table. Track was the week link in the system after a time.

I’m assuming that that’s what happened to almost all of this. Surprises me that brand new ones keep popping up on the collector market. I have the Virginia and Truckee "Silverado" set. Fell in love with the beautiful paint scheme on that engine. The cars look nice too. I eventually got the baggage and coach to add on and I joined a garden railroad club. Having tons of fun with it. I think I latched onto it because I was looking at HO 4-4-0s on Bachmann's website and decided to see what they had in large scale and was just the super expensive Spectrum stuff for 4-4-0s. I had been wanting a colorful old timey engine for a while, so after months, if not more, of pining after this set I finally picked it up, for around $300, ordered from a hobby shop in California. The MSRP is $540... so that is their trick lol. I feel like I am in Bizarro Land since you usually get a discount from ordering direct from manufacturer, or at least you used to! Still a good deal in my book since some engines alone can cost that or more even in smaller scales! The prices on some of this stuff is ridiculous! And I would not call it "crappy" by any means. Certainly not after the years of improvements you talked about. I also already had a Jack Daniels Aristo-Craft set my grandma gave my that she won in a grocery store drawing years back. My interest was already there for G scale though and this did not deter me from the "Silverado" set. Been having a great time with both sets! There are videos of the trains on my KZbin. Glad you made this great video and covered this topic, Toy Man!

Hi. One of the fun things about that 10 wheeler is it’s a narrow gauge engine and modeled in pretty much 122 scale, but it also works pretty nicely as a 1/32 scale standard gauge locomotive! A bit big for that but so many do standard gauge in 1/29 scale and it’s right at home as a 1/29 standard gauge V and T Baldwin ten wheeler! Drivers just a bit small. But just a bit. Super close to scale! Just luck I assume but who knows, Bachmann may have had that in mind all along!!!

Great video. I was a multiple buyer and customizer when these first came out as well. Before Bachmann started making Spectrum G gauge locomotives they also made a different design track powered steam engine (briefly), a 2-4-2 Columbia in old fashioned and modernized versions. Really great little loco which appears to be based on one that ran in Hawaii and is still around today. They also made an 0-4-0 saddle rank porter before upgrading that to Spectrum. Then the highest detail models came when they decided to adopt 1.20.3 scale (I hope I got that right) which were slightly larger models running on the same gauge track. Alas, they seem to have abandoned that market - I think the only new G gauge item in their last catalogue was the fantasy toy Eggliner in a new paint scheme. The glory days seem to have passed with only Piko and LGB mass producing G for the US market as far as I am aware. Hartland and USA Trains (as well as Aristocraft) all having exited the market. But they left us with a wealth of great models to play with forever!

Yes, Bachman has pretty much given up on F scale, and On30. Really sad because those were their best products I think. They seem to be concentrating on HO, and returning their large scale to the toy train market.

Thank you both for a very informative historical look at the beginning of the Bachmann large scale train model business that has grown and has been very successful for the company. It is amazing how they went from the cheap battery model to the high quality Spectrum line, and yet are still using the molds for the large scale train sets with the Baldwin 10 wheeler, and the higher quality version you mentioned in the video that I believe they called the "Anniversary Edition 4-6-0." As of 2012 in their catalogue, they indicated they had sold over a million of these engines. You were right, they certainly helped to get many people in the garden railroad hobby, but unfortunately, forced LGB into bankruptcy! Thank you so much for sharing and your love of the hobby! It changed my life, too! I had been into HOn3 and could hardly get it ion the track. So the Big Hauler was wonderful for someone with big clumsy hands. Plus, it ran on batteries! It didn't need electric track! I was a furniture maker and had lots of wood so I make wooden track all over my shop! Then rechargeable batteries came out and I was hooked. I never got it outside. It just ran all around my shop and dirty track meant nothing! But, I have been waiting for them to make a better radio controlled system and they went the other way and turned it into another electric track train! Rats! Now we're back to all the problems with electric track. Hey, real trains don't run on electric track! So, I'm still waiting. In the meantime I converted my HOn3 layout to On30 and love it. Keep it up, Dale!

You didn't mention the plastic coal tipple. It was shown in the promotional photo, but I'm not sure if it came in the set. My father came home with that set probably the first Christmas it was released and I remember we had the coal tipple too. I just cannot remember if it was in the box or not. I don't remember the remote. As I recall, we had to turn it on and let it go, but that could have been because the remote was lost or broken before my memories solidified. Funny story, one year I decided to eat an entire box of Honey Nut Cheerios from the gondola (with milk). One spoonful per lap for an entire morning of cartoons. It was a one piece mold so held liquid quite well.

Great "history lesson". Lots of detail. Bear Trap spark arrester? Yea, there was an interesting journey for me. Bear Trap. But what are the two "55 Gallon Drums" sitting athwart the boiler feeding? Their purpose? I've looked at several pics of the arrangement online - but no explanation. Anyhow. I dig your "visits to the attic" videos best - it's you explaining scale things using your gear. When you visit places (still OK) we see OTHER people's works, all with good "story telling" - but. While I do not make videos, I can still appreciate the time and effort that goes into "just sitting and talking" - a LOT. Well, I've spent both my pennies on this (2 cents worth) and I'm still here. Thank you for sharing...

Besides the D batteries, I seem to recall that there was an adapter included that allowed you to use an R/C NiCad battery pack instead. I sold these sets in 1988/89 - and every single one of them failed within months of their sale. It was a radio problem. Mechanically they were fine. Then they released the track-powered models - and most of those failed as well - usually split gears. Put me off the range for a long time.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Mine never failed. But I hear you. Many problems. But..... $25. The split gears problem was huge. All of the early - early as first 20 years, the moguls and 4-4-0s. The first shay. Now that one took the cake. And pie. And cake again. Gears often fail in the first 40 feet. Yet... I love it. I fixed it. They gave me a kit. Free. Easy fix. And I love that little shay. So mixed bag. Oddly the problems seemed to disappear after the Chinese took over the company. Not sure what to think about that but love to share drinks with the old Bachmann developers here in the US. (Again) and get their take on why models they were not ready were always released. And how and why the problems seem to be fixed. And why they are not developing any new G scale.
@emdB675 жыл бұрын
I'm in Australia, so we didn't see them that cheap here. I can't remember the selling price, but I know they were still great value. The only G scale I'd seen cheaper was in the mid 80s when a local Safeway supermarket in the regional town I lived in had some Chinese knock-offs of the LGB battery train set. This was in December. They were AU$19.95, which was already a bargain. But they knocked them down to an incredible $10.00 in the week before Christmas, so I bought one. Should've bought several. They were the same as the old LGB battery set of that era, other then the China Rail symbol on the smokebox door and the hooded headlight. Oh, and a much lower-quality mechanism - not that I ever had the LGB version, but I'm sure it was better quality. I never had any issues with the battery Big-Hauler gears splitting. But that may be because the radios failed before they had a chance to do that. Most of the electric models did it though - except the tram / trolleys. Good memories regardless.

The locomotive at 7:57 the "White Pass" version could be real with a caveat of the number 10 in that the Alaska Engineering Commission bought a 4-6-0 No. 152 from Baldwin in 1919 for use on the 3-ft trackage out of Fairbanks, Alaska until the bridge of the Tanana R. at Ninana was built. During WW II the loco was sent to the White Pass Rte. for use on the relatively flat Whitehorse to Dawson section. After the war it migrated to the PNW then was sold to the Genesee County Parks & Recreation Commission for the 1976 bicentennial project of a railroad and old time town on park property where it has run since as No. 2 and No. 152. It and the Tweetsie ( East Tennessee & Western North Carolina RR out of Johnson City, TN) No. 12 only real difference is driver diameter by one inch. The No. 12 was built by Baldwin in 1920. The ET&WNC RR painted their locos Southern green. Both locos have Walscherts valve gear and slide valves.

The White Pass #10 was a real locomotive, although the scheme is not 100% correct. The Army purchased ET&WNC #10 and #14 during the war, so the White Pass #10 scheme is meant to depict that directly.

@@ToyManTelevision I agree, the big hauler is just ever so slightly more “model” quality, but the new bright is just as good imo, but it runs a lot better, at least in my comparison and items. I usually put them both together and run em as one long train, they actually both work off a Bachman transformer :)

Dale, I know that this is one of your older videos , But I've watched it 10 times within the last month !!! I just purchased 2 of these locomotives the 49Mh and the 27MH off EBAY and trying to find parts for these thing are "NIGHTMARE" !!! I had to find and replace the speaker cable on one and find a 27MH controller for the other, If you are a RC Car driver you can use some of your old transmitter on these trains but it will take a little work to program them. All in all I got them to run outside on my "New" R&P Lumber Co layout here in Colorado. Dale have ever ran them in the snow there in Utah when you cleared the track ??? And how did they run ???

I got about 3 sets, some missing parts and one just the engine, tender and caboose. I whittled it down to two sets, one complete with the "Bach-Man" comic and all the accessories (plastic track too) and sold that one on eBay. I kept one set of rolling stock plus the engine and tender complete with the remote (sound works too). I have a question though, I'd like to repaint the locomotive and tender to something more appropriate, black with white accents, but can't find any "how to articles" on how to dis-assemble the locomotive. Anyone out there have any ideas? thanks!

The 10 wheeler wasn't done as a Spectrum, but the Annie name comes from the Anniversary edition (that you called Spectrum). The original was never called "Annie." You can buy the "Annie" chassis from Bachmann for like $50-60 and retrofit your old battery engines.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Yup. That’s the show in 2 weeks. The retro fit. Thanks for the history. I was told that was a spectrum.
@Sjoc785 жыл бұрын
@@ToyManTelevision Looking forward to your take on the retrofit. I've done 3 so far and found it to be one of the best bang for your buck in large scale. Next project is turning one into a 20.3 scale RGS 20
@GrumpSkull5 жыл бұрын
It was initially when Bachmann was doing various scales in their new Spectrum range. Even the first 1:22.5 Lyn 2-4-2 was a Spectrum but the much improved metal geared re-release is in the Big Hauler range. Now Spectrum is only 1:20.3 scale.

Growing up in the 70's old Bachmann N-Scale was I thought OK. Cheap and it ran OK. More so if one knew how to fine tune the engines and cars which I did. Engines were around $10. Steam engines were $12-15. Most rolling stock was under $3. For maybe $3-5 at the time, one could improve the rolling stock with Kadee couplers and wheelsets.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Yup. I had n scale at the time. Kadie couplers. Atlas. But Bachmann always affordable. Always reasonable

Always wanted to start G scale (Currently member of an HO scale club) but I was wondering how you guys manage so many cool hobbies! What mindset do you have to put equal effort into all these different scales without dropping another from your interests for a duration of time?

What is 'G' gauge? 28 mm? Scale of 7 mm to the foot?
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
I’m hopeless that way. Karyn is more focused. But most of my models are not built, many of the trains never run. Sigh... but I did have an n scale for about 3 years. A huge HO for about 10. A garden railroad for about 6 years. Ran it often. But haven’t had a working layout for 20 years now. So I guess part of my “success” is getting old. And keeping somehow many of my toys. In boxes stashed away.

By the time Bachmann got the gears to not split in many of the Spectrum range, they became almost as expensive as LGB. How any company can get away with distributing new items already broken in the box is beyond me. The Anniversary 4-6-0 and Spectrum range have very nice detail though.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Yup. Shipped broken. I’m not sure if Bachmann was aware but the manufacturer in China surely knew. And now the Chinese manufacturer owns the company.

@@ToyManTelevision Now 'North West Short Line' who supplied replacement delrin gears have recently closed. The boom time of large scale trains is over with the main players either gone bankrupt or no longer making large scale stuff. Live steam is alive though with the more expensive Accucraft range etc. but priced out of reach for most. Chinese production flooded the market with inferior products which were over produced then sold off to discount dealers and killed LGB. Aristocraft had similar issues with wheels falling off etc. then they went belly up too. Current Marklin/LGB products are an expensive joke. Piko have taken up the gap but in the odd scale of 1/24 which is inaccurate for the prototypes they make. My spare room is like a supermarket of items I have collected over the years. Although I have way too many trains, I don't regret buying any of them.

Just a slight correction - Bachmann is not a US manufacturer, but a Chinese! Bachmann also produces top quality model railroad products for the UK and European markets. LGB did not go bankrupt due to Bachmann, but due to a gerneral slump in the European market. Sorry, Bachmann did not change the world, LGB did!
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Bachmann was American before the Chinese took over. Well back in the 60’s and 50’s. The big impact was the crash of economy in 08. Was in trouble before that but the crash killed all hobbies. But Bachmann had taken over before that. And the Chinese takeover didn’t help. LGB probably would have been fine as the 3rd place g scale company but 08 killed everyone except accucraft and Bachmann

Hello i have one of these big haulers that i am selling,looks like is in very good condition with no broken parts or anything. I know nothing about trains and i have a potential buyer that's asking me if it works how could i test it without putting all the tracks and carts together?
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
Hum... if it’s a set- if it has the power “pack” (supply) it should be easy to set up on a bit of track. I think all of the sets came with 2 pieces of straight track. Hook those together and hook power to the track. And plug the two wires that go from the tender to the locomotive in and it should work. Now if it’s just the locomotive it’s a bit more of a problem. Still need to plug in the tender to the locomotive with the two (some have one) wires that plug into the tender from the locomotive. Now you need to get power to the wheels. A 6 or 12 volt batterie will do the trick but you need 2 jumper wires to touch to the wheels. One to a left wheel one to a right and it should go. Depending on how the locomotive is wired you may need to touch one side on a locomotive wheel and the other on a tender. But I think all of them work with the test leads on either or the other. In fact the locomotive should work without the tender connected but I think many if not all have sound systems in the tender
