Doom in todays standards is not scary, but back then it would have had a level of scare factor to it, I mean the lost souls probably jumpscared plenty of unsuspecting new players, along with pretty much every enemy alert sound, in addition to the fact that the boss alert sound can be heard anywhere on the map, giving you a feeling of dread as you know that something big and probably not to friendly has woken up and you don't know where it is.

To me, the complete jettison of the horror elements kinda fits as an escalation of the player's experiences throughout the series. You were intimidated in Doom and Doom II, terrified (maybe) in Doom 3, but now you've been through this so many times you're not even remotely afraid anymore in Doom 2016 and the forthcoming Doom Eternal. It's kind of like growing up; the things that terrified you as a child aren't so scary anymore now that you're grown up and mature, and you're ready to fight back for real now.

Have to agree on the visual design. The Mars parts look pretty damn good in my opinion, especially when things get gory, but the Hell levels are disappointingly tame and toothless. I was hoping for a surreal mess of Escherian architecture and sky-high piles of maimed corpses, worthy of a death metal album cover. Instead what we got was a drab, Darksiders-style Saturday morning cartoon netherworld with oversized bones and skulls. But that and a few other minor complaints aside, I bloody love this game. In fact, I'd argue that out of all the modern arcade shooters it is the best I have played so far. The Shadow Warrior remake was entertaining, but it honestly feels cluttered and almost clunky when put next to DOOM's focused and condensed shooting and movement mechanics.

@Blurgleflargle8 жыл бұрын
OK, in hindsight I guess there's at least a plot-related reason for the Hell levels being the way they are; this is very much a "post-apocalyptic" version of Hell, which had been completely devastated in previous events by the DOOMguy's genocidal rampage (and as such made "safe" for the UAC to invade and exploit Hell in the first place, which means the DOOMguy was actually sort-of responsible for the whole mess). Which in turn means that in the upcoming DLC or sequel we might actually get to visit a reinvigorated level of hell, something that is more akin to the shapeshifting mess of fire, psychedelic colours and maimed bodies from the previous games.
@Arbiter0998 жыл бұрын
eh, DOOM 1 and 2 hell does have walls of bones and structures made of meat and skin with people's faces screaming on them and bodies nailed to the wall and waterfalls of blood and the occasional field of lava. I mained the super shotgun in this game. Sure, when you had the Faster Reload and Uranium Coating power-ups it became a bit more powerful, but when you gave it the Double Trouble power-up, you became unstoppable. I'd shoot rapidly with really quick reloads, applying the maximum amount of damage within seconds. Best gun ever.
@TheSefirosu200x4 жыл бұрын
I usually main the Gauss Rifle (with mobile turret mod or whatever it's called) when I get it, followed by the Rocket Launcher (with lock-on because, well, duh) as my second, then the Plasma Rifle (don't really ever find any occasion to use _either_ of its mods) and assault rifle (with micromissile rounds) are tied, with Chaingun and Shotgun then also being tied for last place. I never really used the Super Shotgun that much because I didn't really know for sure what it could do, *_until_* my most recent playthrough, when I finally tried it out only to learn that it's pretty badass. Doesn't seem to be quite as powerful as the Gauss Rifle, but it can easily put mid-tier enemies like Imps into stagger mode for a quick Glory Kill, so I like using it occasionally.

Guys, that's not exactly what I mean. Original Doom was run-n-gun fun. Maybe you run out of shot gun ammo or rockets, but Doom 3 was more frustrating in that regard than it was scary/intense/challenging. Doom 3 made me start looking around corners and made me choose between a gun and a flashlight. It became fairly predicable. I guess I really didn't enjoy Doom 3 as a sequel and greatly look forward to this new Doom reboot.
@adambrown66697 жыл бұрын
Doom 3 on consoles was arguably much better, you could have the flashlight on whilst using your gun, and the combat felt a little smoother and vastly more like a Doom game, not quite like the new one or the originals but still a very good game, with a menu theme that just screamed(literally) murderous metal joy.

I guess I played DOOM 1 at a pretty slow pace. I don't really remember it as super fast, though I usually only play episode 1 if I play it again. To me, this is another reboot that remembers the original differently than I do. I guess I took a lot of the old games too seriously and thought of them as attempting to be gritty and realistic instead of an over the top comic book style. (XCom for instance)
@bingobongo16156 жыл бұрын
Crow's Bridge it never was that fast back in the day... maybe if you play it now on a modern beast you get 100+FPS to make things super fluid
@jasonfenton82505 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Doom, the original, is in large part an exploration game driven by mood lighting and atmospheric music. Yes, there was the thrash metal of E1M1, but there was a lot of moody ambient stuff in there, as well as jaunty orchestra and... jazz? Blues? Doom 2016 is based on Brutal Doom's interpretation of Doom, based on the old Doom comic. These three things made Doom's modern image wildly different than what Doom I and II actually were.

I couldn't play this since my PC is too shit for games and I don't own expensive consoles like a PS4 but I got the Switch version and finally could enjoy the game. I'm loving it so far and that's me coming from years of playing classic Doom.

To be fair if you read the lore pieces in doom 2016 Doomguy's backstory is actually very interesting and definitely helps the story
@garrettk71665 жыл бұрын
And the devs specifically made the story not get in the way of the game play. They wanted gameplay and fun to come first. The story added in such a way that it didn't stop or break up the game play. Plus made so that the player could dive into the story if they wanted to on their own time.

I think you're way off on the DOOM multiplayer. The MP is really fun and most of the modes are great. I also love that if one of your friends has the DLC then you can use it when in a party with him online. Me and some friends play DOOM MP and love it. Its simple in ways but more fun than lots of other games online.

I'd say one of the areas where DOOM falls short from the original is the linear story. Whereas the older Doom had you wondering "What is this place?" "Why does it exist?" "What happened here?" without any concrete answers, the newer Doom just force feeds you story under the assumption that it doesn't matter. Great video as always!

Maybe it's just a weird quirk of how my brain works, but I honestly think I can credit the 'music' of the game for keeping me alive in the late game. I agree, it's a relentless barrage of chaotic noise that barely seems to count as music -- but from about the mid-point of the game onward, I barely seemed to notice it during the fights, only registering it when I watched back my recordings to take notes. I think what was happening was an effect similar to white noise: my parietal lobe was getting blasted by so much incoherent junk information from my auditory nerves that, after a while, it started tuning it out, only paying attention to any anomalies in the background noise that might signify something important; since it wasn't devoting as much cognitive real estate to _that,_ it could focus more on the information coming in from the optic nerves, processing the visual cues from the fight and improving the speed at which I could react. I dunno if anyone else had a similar experience, but that's the best explanation I could figure out for my own experience with _DOOM._

i really wish brutal doom wasnt so popular. its not that you cant enjoy it its just, for every time i hear it i cringe. i cant deny the fact that its been hella influential on the new doom modding scene, but like, the guy's banned from every doom modding forum and is absolutely detested by virtually every old doomer, not for his product but for how much of a horrid piece of shit the creator is to the point where its detestable. from a guy whos been making mods since 2004 its just, it hurts whenever i hear it, and it hurts a lot of others as well.

Actually, maybe Snapmap is a good thing for doom... Well, it does restrict the assets that can be used in the map, but it runs way more stable, and as soon as the script system is strong enough, there can still be plenty of variety in the maps. Just think of how glitchy Skyrim is. (Even though I do love Skyrim a lot.) But... Since I'm not a hardcore FPS fans, I guess I would wait for a sale.

My first experience of Doom title was Doom 3, at that time i thought it was about dinosaur and such. But when I saw that screenshot from bathroom with Pinky I know that something is wrong here... The most scary game ever! I know only few people who played this game and finished it. Others said it was making them go insane. Literary. Too much. Too scary. Too psycho. And that's what like about it!!! The recent one? Well it looks more like Quake or Unreal Tournament... Which is good but... You know. Not Doom at all.

"people who complain seem to want something on the quake level type of gameplay" On the contrary, wish it had less Quake elements, and the same weapons you get on SP, that was always the Doom MP, also you supose to have an strategy, again, it shows ID didnt make the MP cuz doom never was bout strategy, not on campaign nor in MP

I thought it was fun. Though I gave up FPS multiplayer shooters a long time ago (thanks CoD...) kinda burnt out on them. It was good multiplayer but it could've used a lot more polish. Demons would have been awesome if they worked out a better system for them instead of a short burst of OP-ness, maybe allow one demon per team at all times? Or one demon vs everyone (even teammates)? It felt very tacked in. Also it would've been way more fun if they had two narrator/announcers: VEGA for human players, Demon Guy/Quake Guy for demon players. Like I said, the multiplayer was lots of fun, adding in another 10 hours on my DOOM playthrough. But it could've used a lot more polishing and refining.

For me it was like a faster version of Doom 3. They should have ditched the upgrade system and just had weapon upgrades the same way the new Wolfenstein game did it - I.e. the weapons just get upgraded throughout the game without having to manually upgrade them.
