Checking out the usual thrift stores in my area and seeing what kind of retro tech and random old weirdness I can find. Then I ended up taking a bit of a detour and dropped by a local gaming and collector's event! And I figured hey, why not roll it up into a Thrifts episode? Let's go thrifting!

The "witchcraft" is audio from an episode of Lights Out, a horror/science fiction anthology that began in 1934 under of Wyllis Cooper. In 1936 Arch Oboler took over production duties, and the program lasted until 1947. It would be produced for radio from 1947-1949. It's most memorable for having really graphic special effects sounds...human beings being turned inside out, etc. The episode you have is "The Chicken Heart," in which a tiny piece of chicken heart has been kept alive in a laboratory, until it starts to grow, and grow, and grow...until it consumes the world. Hans Conried stars as Dr. Calvin, the scientist who was experimenting on a chicken heart, before it became the chicken heart.

@@abcephei It also was a story element in Fat Albert! cartoon. One of the characters tells a camp fire story about a mutant chicken heart that grows til eat "eats" New York. It seemed such a ridiculous premise and plot, I was sure it was made up just for Fat Albert. Hearing that it was a real '40s radio show is very surreal.

Wait, didn't Bill Cosby have a comedy bit that referenced this? I recall a record of him talking about when he was a kid. He would describe it, "Chicken Heart... Thump thump... Chicken Heart...". I last heard that maybe back in the '70s.

Kinda jelly not gonna lie, the goodwills around here are kinda hot garbage. They sell games without the disks or anything besides the manual and box. They tape it closed and won't let you check it before buying it (they keep it all locked in a glass case at the regiater), no refunds and charge you anywhere from $10 on up for the gamble on if you're gonna actually get what you paid for or just an empty box. And that's on the very rare occasion they actually get that stuff in. Otherwise it's broken baby stuff, Target's overstock, or someone's massive used underwear collection....

I was still using a c64 and Pentium one at the time, so it was very exciting for me as I'd get to take home new software. My most memorable find was a complete in box apple PC comparability card (486 on a card) for PowerPC macs. I threw it in my PowerPC 9600 and was happily running windows 98. Could basically only play primitive DOS games as it shared the macs video card and mac hard drive. Still a neat find for 10$ back then

Depends on where you live and what thrift store looking in. My local Goodwill has *nothing* of personal interest.

@@Chaos89P My Goodwill was decent but it seems to have changed, especially since Covid. I used to be able to find a bunch of goodies but not so much anymore and it seems like the prices have been jacked up. The other thrift stores in town don't really have anything too interesting either.

Haven’t really watched myself considering I more so watched and enjoyed the old retro game reviews and his Sims reviews (which is the reason I’m here, to see if anyone would ask about it or whatever).

Just now watching this episode. That Quantex Cyrix 486DX2 is the *exact* machine my family had when I was in high school. I remember spending way too much time on IRC, or in MUDs, or playing Westwood/Infocom BattleTech games. It was an awesome "holy cow!" moment seeing it again! ❤️

I wish we had Goodwill in the UK, we have charity shops but they're usually small and aren't allowed to sell electronic items whit plugs. My brother lives in Texas and he took me to several Goodwill stores and I was amazed! Cool video LGR !

I've just watched all the thrifts back to back over how many nights it took .Watching this now over breakfast . I am sure im not the first to mention the irony of this wonderful series . That all this mans stuff is destined for, no doubt at some point.Back in the thrift store from where it all came . Crazy world - I hope it never ends up e' waste in a bin 🤞WE all need to reuse and stop this crazy pursuit of better and more. We have enough already this program points this out beautifully .

Once again, their electronics prices are absolutely absurd. $28 for a scanner that can't do a fraction of what it used to thanks to modern day radio encryption? $15 for a 30 pin ipod clock radio? Get real.
