8.9kg is just under 20 pounds. Two of those mini 12v, 100AH batteries would weigh about 39.25lbs and deliver very close to 100AH of power, @ 24v, if connected in series. When I compare that to the old AGM batteries I used to have in my boat, which weighed 65 pounds a piece, and only delivered 50AH of usable power, @ 24v, it really is astounding how much more energy dense these LiFePO4 options are. You have a weight reduction of 90 pounds, double the amount of usable power, and they take up roughly half the space of the AGM's. When you consider there is virtually no voltage sag, and you get at least 5 times as many charge cycles from them, I can't imagine why anyone would choose AGM's for their trolling motor batteries.

I agree. Also very low self discharge rate so you wont need to have a float charger plugged in year round.

IF you are at the dock hooked up to shore power, DO NOT!!! bother with a LiFePO4!!! Save your money. IF you use it to go out trolling around and use them almost to zero and recharge them right before you go out, yeah, that's great. Really look at your use case before you bother with LiFePO4.
@BradCagle

@@david78212 I disagree. The price of LiFePO4 is not terribly far off from a decent AGM now. You'll get much more usable capacity with the same spec LiFeP04, and have less worry about damaging it on deep discharges.

If you watch the testing videos Andy, from the Off-Grid Garage, did on voltage and capacity testing, there is virtually no reason to go over 3.5 volts per cell, or 14v for a 4S, 12.8v LFP battery. Also, those two batteries are CLEARLY made in the exact same factory with almost all of the same components. It's pretty boring, how consistent all of these types of products have become, which is great because we have so many options to choose from.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Жыл бұрын
Right i keep my charge under 3.55v per cell in practice. i like to test if it will go to 3.65 to see how close it get before the BMS trips. Yeah it makes sense because the real manufacturer has the cell buying power in huge quality, the marketing companies get to private label really quality batteries, and we get to buy them super cheap.
@nordic5490
@nordic5490 Жыл бұрын
Not true at all. Adventrue Kings batteries quote in their specs for their 120AH LFP: "... The BMS will also perform cell balancing at 3.5V per cell with 35mA of current... ". What this means, is that a min of 14v is necessary for battery balancing to occur. These LFP batteries should be charged to 14.2v, and held at 14.2 volts for a minimum of 30mins, (a balancing time of 2hrs is specified by another manufacturer) to give the abalancing circuit time to do the balancing task. At the lower voltages some youtube comments advocate, the balancing circuit will not function. Balancing is always done at the end of the charge. And no, you do not have to balance charge every time. Charging to >14.2v , and holding that voltage for 30 to 120 mins, every 3 to 5 charges should be enough to keep your 4 cell LFP battery balanced. At 14.2v, you can watch the balancing currrent operate, with the current slowly falling from, eg, 200ma to 50ma over an hour.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Жыл бұрын
@@nordic5490 Every BMS I've used (well smart BMS's for that matter) are default to start balancing at 3.45v, and some 3.4v. I do agree with these prebuilt batteries you should charge at least to 14.2v as that is stated as the minimum charge in the manual, so maybe the dumb BMSs do start balancing at higher voltage. This charge voltage confusion is because some people (actually a lot) get random cells to build a DIY pack, these cell will likely not be matched in capacity, nor IR so they must be charge at a lower voltage to keep some cells from running away. These prebuilt batteries "should" have matched cells allowing them to charge higher, and stay closer in voltage.

Yes. 1). the regular size 100ah has alot of unused space inside, like a bag of chips. The minis just remove that extra space making the whole thing smaller 2) these mini batteries use pouch cells, which are smaller, and lighter.

@@BradCagle yeah also I don't get 100ah.. I always get like 95 to 92ah when I charge it back up .. that's the thing with cylinder style battery it's a bit lower capacity too.. but I think they won't have swelling issues tho like pouch or square style packs. But then again all depends how you abuse it in high Amp loads and if it's compressed.. I use mine on a trolling motor for my little inflatable boat. Motor peeks pull 50amps but goes to 40amp when moving but I let it hit 25 to 30amps most time just so I can have more range, not that I use up all the battery anyway, most time I only burn about 35ah out of the 100ah. I'll get this smaller battery for my boat and use my current one with a small 1000 inveter to power up my lights solder iron charge phone and laptop and small fans and heater..

I was thinking about running this battery on my bagger for audio purposes (which is why I’m here) running about 8500 watts rms (although music is dynamic) which is about 665A of draw at peak . Would you feel confident that this battery would truly perform to its rating? I ask because normally 60aH is usually sufficient for a setup like mine, but I’m partial due to being unfamiliar with this brand.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Жыл бұрын
This battery's rating is 100A, this is the limit of the BMS, so the most you could pull continuously is 100A. Not sure what it would do in short bursts, but I'm pretty sure it would go into protection mode if it got anywhere near 665A even for a fraction of a second. The BMS in batteries like these limit them to energy storage rather than being usable for high current demands like starting engines, or competition audio, etc.. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment!

Your trolling motor probably draws around 8 amps on its lowest speed. So a 100ah battery would run the trolling motor for about 12.5 hours. The best way to really figure it out is get a amp clamp, you can get one at Harbor Freight for 15 bucks. Next time you are out hook up the amp meter and see what the amperage draw is on each speed. Once you know those values you can decide what amp hour battery you need. Hope this helps you.

@@BradCagle From what I understand, and I hope others correct me if I am wrong, is that pouch cells are more prone to expansion than prismatic cells. @BradCagle
@BradCagle Жыл бұрын
@@josemuse4119 I see. I think this battery design accounts for all this. The aluminum plates on the sides with the bolts holding tension (some call this a compression fixture) should keep them from expanding, and this battery case is much more rigid/reinforced to protect the cells. As for the vent on prismatic, it's sealed, and only for safety so the rigid aluminum case of the prismatic cell does not become shrapnel in the event of rapid expansion.
